God DAMN that was a badass novella!!

I have been on a Lovecraft kick here lately and bought a collection of his short stories and just got around to reading Mountains of Madness, it's a science fiction masterpiece.

Hey, kinda related. Barnes and Noble has a "Essential Writers" series of hardcovers in their stores and one of the authors is Lovecraft. You can get a hardcover book of all of his fiction for 12.95. I had been looking for a compilation and you can't beat the price for over 1000 pages of Lovecraft.

As far as I know you can't grab them online, only in stores, but here's what it looks like.

H.P. Lovecraft, Library of Essential Writers Series, H. P. Lovecraft, Book - Barnes & Noble

dude i'm freaking out, man! :lol

while this story is one of my faves, it's probably one his stuff that doesn't fly very well as contemporary lit, for use in pop medium, say, movies. in those days, uncharted parts of the earth is more plausible than now. i mean, if that stuff happened now, it probably makes the cover of national geographic (dun DUN dun DUN dun, dun dun dun DUN dunna dunna DUN!) with a special on cable or something. right before the takeover by vegetable insect overlords, of course.

Yeah, but it has the whole part where the main character is trying to escape from a whole town bent on killing him, and it's creepy. :lol

    This.

I was holding my breath through the whole escape.

But, I got thinking afterwords... were they really going to kill him? Maybe they knew what he was before he did. Ehh, ehh?

the suspense in dudes escape from mermantown is credit to lovecrafts writing, and storytelling convention of the times, i suppose. the drama and prose was taut enough to convey urgency. i personally dont think the idea of running from a crowd that scary, just the idea what the people turn out to be and what theyd to do the guy was what make the whole premise work. in fact. at times his escape even felt slightly convenient which is where the twist at the end became the real shocker.

nah, im just saying that other story despite mostly exposition/comparative lack of action was scarier.
