I think that is one of the stupidest alt modes that could possibly be picked for a Transformer. I thought it was stupid for Energon with Shockblast, and it's more stupid for a live action movie. I mean how many satellites do you ever actually see? How many satellites do you EVER see through your day to day activities and travels on earth? Farther more, what do they have to do with making sounds/noises (other than giving a silent invisible signal)? Choosing a satellite transformation for a Transformer, let alone Soundwave, is one of those WTF moments in Transformers history. What good does it do for a transformer on earth to Transform into a sattelite??? Where is the disguies or the practicality?

I know there have been some odd alt mode choices in transformers history but at least those were useful within their group and practical to transform back and forth to and fro amongst the rest of the Transformers and humans granting whatever expertise the group needed from that character. A satellite just orbits around space in the middle of nowhere isolated and all alone away from civilization. Space which is miles upon miles above civilized land... Hard to see how Soundwave could be within the ranks of the Decepticons on a mission if that's all he can turn into.

Well that's my little rant for the month. Thanks for letting me vent.

Interesting, but I still don't see any practicality of it even in the context of Cybertron. I mean he'd just be floating around all day away from the rest of the Decepticons. And I know that a Telephone Pole/Lamp Post seen in the first part of the first episode of the cartoon wasn't any better, although at least that kept him among the group

Anyway, sorry. I don't mean to highjack the thread. This is about the toy after all.

Well, he could, like, spy and transmit....info....to Decpeticons on Earth. Or something like that. OK, that is a pretty dumb alt mode. Hopefully his Earth mode will be better.

You know, a satellite altmode isn't that stupid.

Since the Autobots are working with humans, they have access to Terran communication/coordination systems. The 'cons do not - and odds are that thanks to the Autobots, they're now locked out of simply hacking Earth's systems.

Thus, you have a Decepticon up in space who is in charge of monitoring/coordinating the troops - he'd be inconspicuous and allow for the 'cons to be thinly spread and still effective.

Wasn't Soundwave a damn TRAFFIC LIGHT or streetlight or something on Cybertron in the old cartoon?

Yeah - he was a street lamp.

And infinitely less cool than Signal Lancer from Cybertron in that mode.

It's pretty simple really. He STARTS as a satelite, transformers and comes to the surface, then scans a new alt-mode truck that he uses for the rest of the movie.

He's the new Bumblebee for RotF where he will get a ton of toys representing two different alt modes, only really mean and way cooler.

I don't care what people think, a Decepticon intelligence officer disguised as a satellite is genius.

you obviously aren't familiar with G1 then.. soundwave's original cybertron alt mode was a street-light. very useful and sound related i'm sure you'll agree.

And how the heck is a freakin' orbital deathray a stupid alt-mode? On the contrary, it's probably the most badass thing ever.

Shockblast using it like a spaceship mode in the 'toon, however, was stupid.

I know some people who swear up and down that it's a communications tower.

A week later and still no clear pictures. Not that I'm complaining, I'm actually quite surprised.

I'm guessing you have little understanding of how satellites work or what they're used for.
Or else you'd realize how fitting it is for a decepticon intelligence officer/spy to be one.

I guess he could have have been a flying saucer.
