I would assume at least part of it is due to GI Joe being significantly older than Transformers. Look at Hotwheels and Barbie. They've been around just as long, and also get many adult oriented product. Eventually, I'd say Transformers will get this sort of treatment outside the movie. You're just going to have to wait another 20 years or so.

I think you grossly underestimate the situation, Gryph. I think there will be one, and a heck of a lot sooner than 20 years. the hints are already there.

Yeaaaaaaahhhhh!!! This is just the beginning, mark my words. If they didn't say they were only doing this with GI Joe, Transformers would be the only other property that it would makes sense for them to try this with!!! Even if it's just a direct to DVD movie or something, it'd be pure win.

I'm defintely looking forward to this.

I don't know about that, i'd like to see what parts an Adult-themed Mr Potato Head would come with.

    Awesome...

Trouble is, I like TFA too much for it to be replaced by another series...

It would be cool, though, if this same crew would take old/new Marvel/DW/IDW classic stories and make a direct-to-dvd one-shot of them, kinda like how DC did with Superman Doomsday and Final Friontier. There are many excellent stories from TF, from Target:2006 through The War Within to Stormbringer, just to mention a few from every era.

It has really nothing to do with how old a franchise is but if there is a market and if they want to pimp stuff to them.

Wich is why I imagine the best way to see Hasbros new direction is to look at Bandai Japan. Their approach is similar. (Among others but bear with me.)

Take Gundam SEED 25th CE Stargazer. Short, adult-themed releases for a youth oriented show. (SEED never didn't do gore, but gore and the approach Stargazer had are two different things. See the first episode of a beautiful hovertank VS mobile suit bout and you see the similarity to the Joe thing.) If sucessfull = ad modelkits.

Or Gundam Unicorn. Novel series for older readers who enjoyed the franchise in the 70's. If liked then = modelkits.

Its an approach I've seen elsewhere wich'll be fun to see aknowledged in the West. Now lets hope that it won't be grimdark and fake-adult in the long run.

The question is how this could work on TF. Short supersweet animated bits are fun. But if they intend to do anything differently than what we've gotten they will probably have to go for Furmanesque G1 high concept sci-fi and space opera or the stuff we've allready seen in the movie but with G1/Classics models.

This is all I have ever wanted from Transformers - a more mature version of G1 style & characterization depicting these things as machines that do what everyone does in war: kill *and* die. Dreamwave's G1 comics came close and Don's artwork pretty much epitomized the way I want to see TF's depicted in terms of old school style mixed with modern updates and realism, so hopefully we can eventually see something like that again, whether it's another comic series - or best of all - a new animated show.

I'm pleasantly shocked this is something that Hasbro is even considering.

Isn't it GI Joe Resolute? That's what the GI Joe fan sites are reporting it as.

I've been saying it forever now, Hasbro should look to do some more mature themed direct to DVD movies for Transformers. It could also work great for something like this with GI Joe.

That way, there shouldn't be any worries about what they could or couldn't get away with on TV. You can still have on shows like animated for the kiddies and adults who enjoy it, and also have something for the fans who enjoy the more mature stuff. It's pure win!

I've always thought it would be a great way to give classics/universe a promotional outlet. With the movies drawing in more fans than ever before I think the animated movies would really help make the franchise explode.

I also think this is the way to go in the video game era. Teens and younger adults for one reason or another don't really tune in as much for long running TV shows the way they once did. This way, we can get our fix without having to worry about what day and time the show is on, and having it get bumped around to different time slots and stuff like that.

We all knew if the fandom grew large enough there would be room for it but GIjoe it makes a lot more sense. I think it is appropriate Hasbro using gijoe instead of their current Number 1 kids franchise.

I am perfectly happy with my TFs being campy instead of hardcore, I am perfectly happy with my He-man never cleaving flesh from bone with his mighty sword, I am also perfectly happy with Mario continuing to bonk bowser with a turtle shell for a kiss from the princess. I don't need blood in my pokemon or Bugs bunny being extreeeeeeeeeeeeeeeme with superpowers in the future.

Not everything needs to be HARDCORE to be better and most times I think it ruins it. I think GIJOE is one of the few series that it actually makes some sense to do that with.

You can't make HARDCORE classics direct to DVD video with mature warnings then sell the toys for kids. Watchdog groups would be all over that and in turn it would pretty much hurt Hasbro. They would need an isolated line that was marketed and designed with the adult warnings on them from the start. Which it sounds like what they are doing with GIJOE as it is not a huge appeal to kids right now.

Sounds awesome. Be interesting to see what comes of this and it'd be kind of cool if they did some Transformers shorts in this vien too. On the other hand I have to say that it would need to not be related to other Transformers product or else you'd have plenty of adult groups on Hasbro's back. Still, looking forward to this one and I'll definently have to pick up the DVDs or watch the webispodes when they come out or whatever.

Sounds perfect to me! And I do hope the Transformers are next on the list for a series like this. I've been wondering for a long time why TF's don't have any direct to DVD movies. It seems to help plenty of toy properties like Bionicle, GIjoe, and even Barbie (my girlfriends daughter is CONSTANTLY watching those)

I'd like to see a direct to dvd movie to accompany classics/universe. I think it could only help the line grow.

I understand your view, but I don't think that's true anymore. GI Joe has been selling to kids for over what, 40 years? My little cousins all have GI Joe and or TFs, among other toys. The movies (which are from the toy lines) are PG-13. Most of all, GI Joe is actual HUMAN DEATH. TFs are giant robots which killing would be a lot easier to get away with. Megatron ripped Jazz IN HALF in a PG-13 movie. If Cobra Commander rips Duke in half, I can safely say the movie will not be PG13.

Most of all, GI Joe is symbolically linked to our troops. So they will always sell to kids. It's one of the ways kids are introduced to patriotism. Not to mention, once the movie comes out, kids will be back on it EVEN MORE. So if they were worried about comsumer groups, they wouldn't be planning a GI Joe with Snake Eyes running his sword through people.

In short, Transformers could be a lot more violent and get away with it than GI Joe.

A realistic-styled, PG-13-rated, Transformers where characters actually kill and die?

It's not as though a film came out last year with every one of those qualities with a hotly anticipated sequel arriving soon!

Personally, I think this is a bit odd- these Hasbro licenses have a strong family-friendly image that can only help them in the crucial 6-12 age market. This shouldn't be sacrificed in favor of more mature imagery when Hasbro owns licenses that already cater to more mature audiences.
