Crap, I do have to buy this mold. Is his pistol translucent? That's kinda cool if so.

I'm getting NA's SG figures, since they're really the only consistent SG Legends releases, but I still hope someone eventually does SG Legends based on the proper molds. Imo the SG colors on the G1 bodies just look... off.

Well, sometimes NA makes further changes to meet the SG esthetic. Their SG Beachcomber is great and quite different from the G1 version. The zombie face of SG Cliffjumper is cool, and Grimlock’s SG looks vicious. He also has a slightly different torso. And of course, SG Megatron is really different from Galvatron…

Unfortunately SG Ratchet’s head is the same inexpressive one…

There are a few NA SG figs that are spot on. Wildfire, Shazam, Uriel. Macchio and Clover are close enough, and I remember seeing someone made a wind vane and smokestacks for Slaughter, helping him look closer to the Classics mold, but unfortunately that was never mass produced afaik. But the rest? Soundwave used Classics Ratchet, Ratchet used Energon Roadblock iirc, Starscream was Cybertron Starscream, etc. If someone made a dedicated SG line, they'd also have the molds for about 63% of the UT. Idk, I just prefer the original SG designs.

Yeah, repaints are just that… Repaints. At least, Newage is really consistent on producing SG versions.

I mean even hasbro is just repainting their modern g1 toys for sg. No one’s insisting that it has to perfectly match the original mold.

Except, weirdly, for Devastator and the Insecticons. :(  And Shockwave. I want them all so badly…

If Funpub had access to all of the molds Hasbro has now, they probably would have made them just repaints of their G1 selves but the requirement of using what was available at the time made for some creative and unexpected yet inspired decisions. It also allowed them a bit of creative liberty when designing their personalities. The use of different molds across toy lines and generations also added to this effect and made it distinct in the franchise. Some of the toys definitely got a little bit of extra work to make them fit their original character more but overall it felt like it was adding some new to the franchise as opposed to just “this character but evil/good.”

I don’t “need” NA/MS/etc to make 1:1 copies of their original SG toys but a bit of the spirit of them is lost when they end up being just repaints.

    EDIT:

Regardless, I am happy to get any representations of the characters.

With regards to Shattered Glass offerings, I guess I never cared enough about that fiction to worry about design fidelity. I simply look at them as potentially interesting alternative decos to molds that I already like— sort of like the Diaclone variants.

Uh, did you not read my posts? Cuz I'm actively insisting it has to perfectly match the original mold.

I'm disappointed in Hasbro, too, ngl. I knew the new SG line was gonna be a massive disappointment for me when they used ER Cliffjumper for Goldbug instead of using SS86 Hot Rod, who is the closest modern figure we have to Cybertron Hot Shot, who was used for the OG SG Goldbug. Yeah yeah then they couldn't do SG Rodimus but idc stfu Idk, I know this is for some reason a highly unpopular opinion, but I'm just so tired of everyone cramming the same blocky, uninspired G1 designs down our throats. I still don't understand how we're insisting on using the same bland designs 40 years later. Why anyone would want to accurately depict a rushed and highly flawed cartoon from the early 80's is absolutely beyond me, and the G1 cartoon was one of my first experiences with Transformers as a kid. I miss the days of Classics, the UT, BW, etc. where they either had updated, modernized designs that took cues from the originals or just entirely new designs. I'm buying the SG figures because I know there's no shot I'll ever get my originals back unless someone who doesn't know what they're worth posts a set on ebay, but I still really wish they looked like the originals.

    Aight, I'm done ranting.
You're allowed to have fun and enjoy things again.

I really enjoy mine. Not sure I $70 enjoy it (got mine for $50 I think), but it’s an impressive figure in both modes. I feel like I remember a good number of folks saying it was one of last year’s best releases, and I think that’s fair ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'd say, honestly, it depends what you want it for. Like almost all Iron Samurai figures it looks incredible - absolutely incredible - posed on a shelf. But also like most Iron Samurai figures, not so great to play with.

As a display piece, definitely buy it. If you're after an Iron Factory Grimlock to play with, pick up one of the Warbotron Rex KO model kits instead.
