SF6 may be the least worst modern SF game. I like how it incorporates aspects I've wanted to see in terms of game mechanics, and the exertion of the Drive gauge making the aggressor prone to stun state is very similar to an idea I had for a Fire Pro style stamina bar to manage aggression. However it's not so pronounced that it puts you at risk. Glad parries are back. Mechanics are pretty simplified feeling thus far.

Movement and character weight feels weird, SF5 felt more like pre-2008 SF games in terms of movement and weight.

Less time sitting at menus and atrocious load screens than SF5 (which was god awful on PS4 and PC).

Wish more of the new characters were playable. Kimberly is the only mildly interesting new character in the beta, but I have terrible luck with Bushin-ryu practitioners. :p

I also like that you can set your preferred character to Random Select. I'd like them to allow you to select which characters you'd like to avoid using, and allow you to use random select within that roster of characters.

All in all, another modern attempt at Street Fighter; but not the SF2 cover band edition that SF4 was, and not the sub-systems insanity of SF5. Just initial impressions.

Felt obliged to take it for a spin as I despised the Ono era and wanted to give a team that seemed to be interested in doing something other than SF2, but with polygons and lame mechanics tacked on. Will try to putz around a bit more before beta ends.

Love this retrospect of the OG SF2.! Time to torture myself again playing it as the Arcade version was so damn cheap compare to the Console counter Hahah

Also never knew of these all bugs for Guile, knew of the Handcuffs but that was it.

Played a bit more SF6 on Sunday night and I think I'm gonna pass. While I appreciate that they're not throwing the baby out with the bath water (seeing enough other fighting games implementing a parry mechanic without them bombing must have finally convinced Capcom universal parries were never the problem with SF3), ultimately the game feels off to me much in the way SF4 did. Movement, character weight, and attack ranges. I don't know if somehow the mocap for animations and switch to weird ass Polar Express visuals (not photo real / not stylized enough claw out of the uncanny valley), but the game just didn't feel right to me. Honestly, I think it's simply time to accept Street Fighter is no longer for me and move on. With each modern iteration, I hope "Maybe the next one with be better and be more ambitious with it's art direction" and every time since 2008 I've been unimpressed or disappointed.

It will never happen, but at this point the only thing that would bring me back is a new Street Fighter Alpha that embraced the visual style of 90's era Capcom that made these games so dear to my heart, thanks to those damned magnificent artists behind them. Not many of those artists still work at Capcom, but they do still have Shinkiro on staff and his visual style would work very well for a polygon based fighter with highly curated visuals in the Arc System Works style of custom Unreal Engine games.

    Use this technology:

To make a game that looks like this in engine:

    shinkiro-art-15.jpeg

Applying this to Street Fighter Alpha would allow the leeway to maintain the more vibrant animated sprite style the Alpha series employed, while Capcom can keep doing whatever they want with mainline SF titles.

In the meantime, I am seriously giving consideration to Tekken 8. If Bob or Master Raven make the cut, I might give it a shot down the road. Bob was always fun and interesting, being a Sammo Hung inspired character made him a lot of fun. I just need to get past my aversion to Tekken.

Come on Sega, just save me and make Virtua Fighter 6! Although after that VF5 PS4 port, I have concerns. It's never good when the PS3/360 version of the game has better lighting and online play than the then current generation take on the game. :p

    Essential for my FGC boomers.

I have no overwhelming need, or urge to buy a new console, but if Sony hits that monstrosity with a shrink ray and doesn't reduce functionality, I may be convinced down the road and not need to render my three PS3/PS4/360/PC arcade sticks to paperweight status.

Apparently this next T8 Character reveal has been leaked as official Bandai Namco hasn't even posted it yet.

Couldn't agree more about 6. I'm officially done with SF sadly. Hate the look of the game and the animations just look garbage to me. Can't say I'm surprised though. After 5 I had very low expectations. Might give Tekken 8 a shot or even MK.

I know this is a straight up fighting game thread but I couldn't help but share this moment at the recent Tekken 7 tournament when Bandai revealed their T7 action figures. Great reveal LOL:D :D

This was a hoot and the comments section pointed out how little normies know about ball joints on action figures.

That said, all I really need is my Epoch Kazuya Mishima figure.

Sadly the only review I could find online. . .

Assuming the reviewer is a Tekken fan, that explains the low quality. Being a VF Chad I cannot cease the shade throwing, despite giving consideration to investing time into Tekken 7. I wonder if they'll get some VF and DOA guest in Tekken 8 since Sega's headed is catastrophically embedded up their own ass, and Team Ninja is just the Souls Lite company now...

Want want want!!!! The backgrounds look great, the combos look smooth, and it seems like a lot of fun.

My only nitpick and this just my personal nitpick, is that they brought back Stryker instead of cooler characters like Night Wolf, Sindel, Smoke, or Cyrax. Unless they'll be in it later. But I don't have to use him so no biggie.

Hilarious how stiff character animation looks in that series. I guess keeping it simple keeps it readable.

Tekken 8 online beta sign-ups are live:

Finally, as Skeet Fighter defined the Ono era; it appears we have the definitive online animation for the Modern Control era:

    Well played...

The Worst Fighting Game covering Beast Wars Transmetals:

I came to the same conclusion Matt did. I still own my PS1 version and it’s lousy but far from the worst. I posted in the comments how I had the chance to buy the exclusive N64 version back when my local Blockbuster was selling off their rental games but settled on Clay Fighter Sculptor’s Cut instead, which turned out to be the right choice in terms of future value.

So has anyone put in time on SF6? I bought it on launch and had minimal time with it (before and after launch).

I finally put time playing online matches with a good friend of mine. I regularly played SF5 online and was really into it. Just to note, I also played a lot of SF4 too. Don’t hate me but I prefer SF5 over SF4 despite the v-trigger BS in SF5.

Anyhow, it was mildly tough getting into SF6 but I am now sold. There is no going back to 5 or 4. This is fun and it holds your attention. Believe the hype.

If you’re on the fence, understand that the game has a lot of single player content if you don’t want to be competitive. And if you do want to be competitive, the training tutorials are very helpful.

Casual or competitive— this game has it covered. And it’s just friggen fun. Online matches are a nice distraction from big, intensive rpgs or other longer games. And yeah, the netcode is legit too.

I’ll stop gushing. Go play some street fighter (6)!

I enjoy how Aris doesn't give a damn about early review / freebies from the industry with his takes.

    I don't disagree.

It's just that no modern Street Fighter game compares to when the franchise ended in 2001. Capcom Vs. SNK 2 is the end of the Street Fighter era for me. None of the modern games feel like Street Fighter - the games feel clunky, slow, and burdened by wonky mechanics (FA:D C, schizo-V-ism). I have never enjoyed the art direction and visuals of any modern entry. SF5 felt closest to the classic era. I've accepted my time with the SF series has ended, much like walking away from certain comics (e.g. when Claremont left X-Men in the 90's, when Bob Layton / David Michelinie stopped collaborating on Iron Man, when Norm Breyfogle left Detective Comics).

It's not bad. All my old games are preserved and I can still enjoy them.

Probably the most random Fighting game thing related but for those who don't know Natalie SideSerf, she creates "Hyper realistic cakes" and I guess Capcom commissioned her to make a SF6 Ryu cake and it's came out pretty good.

Be cautious looking up her channel as all her cakes are a work of art and you'll go down a rabbit hole lol.
