Spoiler So despite the reports they weren’t in it, Peni, Noir, and Ham DO return at the end of the movie (Only Kimiko Glenn returned to reprise her respective role, and archival audio of Nicolas Cage & John Mulaney from the first movie were used for theirs)
That was my only real problem with the movie too. Spoiler The "canon event" thing as a meta joke, that's cute. Fine. Tying it into Miles' overall story about whether or not he's a 'real' Spider-Man? Great stuff, works very well. Having the actual plot hinge on an arbitrary universal rule that all Spider-Mans have to have a police captain friend who dies? Hate it. The specificity would be funny if it was a Rick and Morty joke, but it's ridiculous as a source of actual drama and conflict. There's a scene where Gwen is relieved that her father has retired and is no longer a police captain, and it just felt silly during a section of the movie that was not going for silly. (And not for nothing, having 200 Spider-Men chase after Miles to stop him from trying to save someone's life? Even with the cosmic threat in mind, it just feels...very OFF BRAND for the whole Spider-Man concept) Then we have to sit through the slow burn while Gwen and Peter realize they're very obviously on the wrong side of this moral debate, and waiting for them to have that realization was not engaging. And we'll get it again in the next movie with Jessica and whoever else jumps ship to Miles' side. Everything to the right and left of this section was fantastic, but man, did I not like that middle.
Spoiler: Spoilerish But if get down to it the canon events for Miles already happened for that spider. In 42 verse Miles dad died (dead captain), Uncle Aaron died in his universe. Both events happened. Rescuing OUR Miles' dad will do nothing. Miguel's complaint is the spider was not meant for him. It is from another universe. But by crossing universes it joined the two. Captain death in one universe, uncle death in another.
Here’s the thing though. Spoiler Miguel is adamant that the prevention of a canon event will destroy the universe, but we’ve get shown that’s not true. Miles was bitten by a spider from another universe that he goes to at the end of the movie, and that universe is still alive and well even though they never got their Spider-Man.
Spoiler I was hoping the interpretation of alive and well wouldn’t be so literal. Miguel says disrupting a canon event destroys that universe, but the Miles-Prowler universe without a Spider-Man still exists even without it.
Curious, did anyone else's movie have poor audio mixing? The sound effects were hardly noticeable and sometimes the dialog felt drowned out by the music.
Heading out in a few hours to see it. Paying for the big D giant screen so $12 but think it will be worth the extra $2.
I noticed several points in the movie (particularly the opening monolog) where the dialog came from the side speakers instead of the center channel like normal. It made it very hard to hear what characters were saying.
Oh, hell yeah. After Peaky Blinders and all those Guy Ritchie movies, I’ve usually got no problem with cockney accents, but most of Hobie’s dialogue sounded like he was saying it under his breath. It was like listening to Killface’s kid from Frisky Dingo.
I didn’t think it was that great. Unlike another first part of two comic book film Avengers Infinity War which had a full story. Across the Spiderverse felt like act 1 and 2 then it just stops when the plot gets interesting. The whole movie felt like an exposition dump to prepare us for Beyond the Spiderverse.
Yeah, I liked the pacing and how much time they spent on the characters before the multiverse shenanigans start happening (extended prologue from Gwen's point of view was nice)... but then it just ended in the middle of the story. Cliffhangers can be done well, but there was ZERO payoff or resolution here; it's literally just half a story. Guess I'll wait to judge it till Part 2 (or 3?) comes out. Wish they'd managed to make this one feel more complete on its own, even if it still sets up / leads into the next part. Characters, visuals & music were all great though. Loved Miguel / 2099. And dang, I did not expect the Spot to be such an interesting villain (who goes from comedic to legitimately dark & intense by the end).
Just got back. Packed theatre. Free movie posters and not the tiny ones they like to give out but full size movie posters! Got one for my poster collection! Kid in line behind me was so excited to see the new "miles movie" the mom was laughing and even took a photo on her phone. "People don't know miles?" That kid did! AMC gwen bucket looked neat but not spending $35 on it. Pretty big size bucket. No audio mess ups with mine. Trouble with understanding spider-punk also at times but due to the thick uk accent over not hearing him. Fun film. Some surprises i wasn't expecting like-- Spoiler Lego spidey showing up! MCU Movie prowler and the other live spider-mans cameos. Venon world cameo. Not a fan of 2099 acting more jerk like, but he did try to be nice at one point. Spoiler Scarlett spider narrating himself like darkwing duck was pretty funny. Nice to see-- Spoiler Peni, noir and spider-ham again As for the canon thing-- Spoiler TVA did the same thing in loki. Felt like i was watching loki again. Spoiler The crowd was so into the film the ending shocked them leading to tone of "what?" comments. Heh. Was pretty funny. I did enjoy the film myself and so did the family. Free poster. It's a huge poster!
