Is there any reason why paramount would willingly have that low of a count?

They're not expecting it to do big numbers. If they did they would get as many showings as possible.

We really cannot afford a failure due to scheduling (two years worth of delayed movies in a box office that still is healing). The only thing worse would be a failure due to the actual movie being panned.

It could perform better than their internal expectations, but its not a great sign of confidence in the film.

Could it have something to do with the short length of the movie?

Its either studio or theaters themselves that don't want it on 4k+ screens. Its not the length, Mario is shorter and opened on 4300+

Perhaps Paramount wants it on their streaming service asap? It’s either that or they smell a turkey.

Does it cost $ to put in more theaters? Wouldn’t that only help?

I don't exactly know how the finances work, but I believe the general rule of thumb is in the US the theater gets 50% of the gate. So it could be the theaters don't expect it to do well and would rather have more Spiderman week 2 showings or even TLM week 3 showings. This is also why movies need to earn far more than their production budget to turn a profit. The studio doesn't get 100% of ticket sales. That and there's a ton of other costs beyond just producing the film, the biggest being marketing. On the other hand, there are multiple sources of revenue including soundtrack sales, merchandise etc, so this movie could end up being profitable even if its box office performance isn't great. Merchandise is obviously a huge component here, way more so than say the Super Mario movie or the little mermaid.

The studio will negotiate with theaters to show the movie. In this case, it's likely the theater owners themselves aren't that confident people will want to watch this movie, especially with all of the competition.

I’m sure you know what you’re talking about but.. is this still kind of just.. speculation? Or is this pretty much 99% what happened?

Out of curiosuity, what were Scourge's and Battletrap's voices like? Did we hear a bit of Peter Dinklage and did we hear a bit of Blitzwing from Battletrap?

Not sure how true but there was a rumor where it was stated that this movie could do well

Hope we don't get another Bumblebee situation, where the movie gets really good reviews but it struggles to turn a profit (especially if it's due to how crowded Summer 2023 is looking as opposed to anything in Hasbro/Paramount's control). Worst case would be that the general audience for "CGI movies about robots breaking stuff" no longer exists like it did in 2007-2014, and best case is that RotB does pretty well in overseas markets.
