There were a few that didn't change names, mainly Optimus Primal, Megatron and Depth Charge

Megatron changed his name before the show started, technically.

I think Primal was definitely a name change. Like he was always named Optimus but added Primal to the end afterwards as an homage both to his new gorilla mode as well as to sound like the original Optimus Prime. Depth Charge I assume always had some sort of aquatic alt mode as even his cybertronian head was fish like (mostly due to the fact that they just used the toy heads for all the cybertronian forms but whatever).

Looking at other media it seems like a common Cybertronian practice to change your name based on a new alt mode they take up, especially if they go from machine alt form to beast alt form. Overhaul changed his name to Leobreaker in Cybertron while Ginrai changed his to Victory Leo.

i know he did in the comic, did he do that in the show too?
i mean in a fictional sense. and because this is the internet, we have to poke through every possible hole in fiction that might not make sense or else we're not happy
And Smokescreen became Hoist in Armada, so it could be more of a "brand new body" thing. Energon did that a bunch too, but y'know, it's Energon.

IIRC, the show we find out he chose the name Megatron, though we never learn what his original name was.

I might be confusing things with Botcon stories though.

Yeah in BW it is revealed that the name "Megatron" is taken by whoever is currently leading the Cons. In BW it was to continue the legacy of G1 Megatron but the IDW comics had it be after Megatronus so that version of G1 Megatron changed his name too, but the BW "original G1" Megatron always had that name iirc.
What is it about Armada Smokescreen/Hoist that makes me repeatedly forget he existed? I can remember literally every other Armada character but not him, even though Armada has a relatively small cast if you don't count Mini Cons.

Primal was absolutely not a name change. Depth Charge refers to him as Primal without introductions, so he already knew him as Primal prior to coming to Earth.

Indeed it would. At 1:35, he'd be 8.3cm tall, well within the Core class height range.

Yeah when the show established it was a sequel to some version of G1, it was established BW Megs named himself after G1 Megs though then in the finale (written by Furman) he threw in the revelation Megs took his name from sort of mythical "Megatron" in the Covenant of Primus, which by extension I assume that means G1 Megs also did that.

And by doing so actually named himself after himself.

Reason I said Megatron wasn't a name change is because he changed his name prior to the show and taking his beast mode (putting this as clarification for anyone that wants to um actually my post that was in response to someone saying they all changed their names after getting a beast mode)

Wasn't contesting that, I never really took that scene as an indication anyone really changed their names. It was just some awkward dialogue to establish everyone's names for the kids.

Now that I'm seeing this, I actually want that first head
I personally doubt they'll remold the car, much like how I doubt they'll remold Skyquake into his weird bomber plane. I'd love to be wrong though.

The repaint potential for JP/JW crossover Raptors is huge. I'd be tempted if they did some Lost World Tiger-Striped Raptors.

So, that new lunar rover Optimus... I wonder if there's any chance the unknown Leader Optimus for next year could be something sharing parts/engineering with that? The waist and legs have some similarities with both the Autocracy/Stormbringer and Beast Hunters designs and with a heavy retool on the level of Siege-into-ER-into-Legacy G2, I could see either of those alt modes being possible as well.
Yes, and that was all too obvious with how awkwardly executed it was lol.

That new lunar rover Prime does look pretty good, but is it general retail or crowdfunding? The front page article says its a crowdfunded project so I wonder if that would prevent that new Prime from being retooled into anything else?

What do you think if they used the cab of the new Armada Prime to retool into the Autocracy/Stormbringer Prime? That was kind of what I was thinking they might use, but now you never know lol.

I'm not sure, I'm a little confused on that too but honestly if it is crowdfunded, the fact that they're showing a color prototype already (which they never do before Haslabs are funded and well into development) would make me wonder even more if it's actually a partial of a different figure that's getting a wider, more guaranteed release.

Armada Prime could definitely work well too with enough retooling. I don't think they'd be able to give him accurate shoulders but the rest of the robot mode and the vehicle mode could both get pretty accurate. The SSGE mold might also work with a similar level of retooling, as long as they could slim it down a lot.

Could be but I'm casting doubt considering that it's a crowdfunded project

Both it seems. Crowdfunding first with the standard then a regular release for March 2024. And it seems that those that fund the crowdfunding one get it earlier than the regular one (that comes with no stand).

Yeah was about to correct that. However the wording on the stand seems to mention it being Masterpiece scaled so maybe the Lunar Prime is too big?
