I didn't enjoy the first season of Picard very much and never watched the second season, but my dad convinced me to watch this newest season and it has honestly been incredibly enjoyable. This definitely feels more like the 5th next gen movie that never happened. The characters are very likeable this season and the twists they've added to the returnees (particularly Worf) are very intriguing and incredibly entertaining. I'd say of you loved Next Gen ( or just enjoy the seasons past the end of season 3, like me) then you could watch this newest season without much explanation of the first two seasons. I'm definitely recommending it.

Oh and it's nice seeing Transformers homages outside of the franchise itself

Cool! That’s always cool to have an explicit reference to Transformers. I must say, rewatching the original scene is pretty cool too. Unicron is so menacing. The animation, the lighting, the color, the score. Unicron was such a giant menace from nowhere, but with years of the franchise in hindsight, if this was how we were finally introduced to Unicron after years of build up, kinda like Thanos or Shere Khan or something, maaaan. Would’ve been a hell of an intro.

Taken on its own, it’s still effective. But it’s really effective for us who know who he is now.

Wow - it's good he said it because otherwise, it's a pretty thin homage. The star is on the opposite side and the ship is moving the opposite direction. Plus, "starship-flying-past-star" is relatively standard fare for Star Trek.

It certainly is a spaceship in front of a star.

I think the Star Trek Picard logo in the opening is more of a TF movie nod, in the way it takes us through the emblem, a bit like we are taken through the 'O' in TFTM.

No hair metal Star Trek theme playing though...

Flying by planets, maybe. Ships rarely are seen near stars.

Oh yeah, I had heard last month that there was gonna be some sort of reference to the 86 movie on Picard. I mentioned it in the Picard thread down in the Movies and Television part of the forum. Guess this was it.

    Captain Picard returns to tv...

I'm viewing season 3 as a standalone sequel to TNG.

So far, you don't need to know anything about season 2 and only need to know one thing from season 1 for season 3 to make sense. (And, indeed, some aspects like Seven being a Starfleet commander are...difficult...to square with where she was in the prior season, meaning skipping them actually works to your advantage.)

Season 3 is basically a direct sequel to the TNG movies and a little of DS9. It's a nearly complete 180 from the mission statement of the the prior seasons, which wanted to distance themselves from all of that.

Very much so. It's surprisingly newcomer friendly for a third season of a modern TV show.

Uh, no it's not. The star is typically far away in the background. Stellar coronae are not the typical makeshift stealth tactic in Trek.
Yup! And look at how much more improved the CGI in PIC 3.06 is compared to TNG 5.01 or VOY 4.07!

In those episodes, the ship flight is not framed in homage to Unicron more casually flying alone.

Yes, that is why I linked the Star Trek: Picard thread in the first sentence of my starting post in this thread.

Huh? Haven't you looked at the front page or the Star Trek: Picard thread (in desktop view)? You were credited. I can now see one news credit in the stats underneath your screenname.

Someone that worked on the show literally says it was directly inspired by TFTM, did you not read the post?
