I'm kind of 30 years too young to have a midlife crisis, but I still have a dilemma I'm a young collector, so I thought it'd be best to reach out to more experienced collectors in the fandom for help. I have a budget, plain and simple. I operate off of allowance (I'ma enjoy what little left I have of my childhood while I still have one), which means 24 bucks every other week. I also care a lot about vehicle scale, a lot more than I do robot scale. This sucks when it comes to planebots, because at a chug scale, they have no chance to ever scale with carbots in vehicle mode. I've been thinking a lot, but downscaling to a legends scale for my collection would mitigate this issue. It would also make collecting human figures a lot simpler, as 1/60 scale humans are a lot easier to come by than 1/32-1/35 scale humans. With a downscale, budget would also be quite a lot easier to handle, and I would be able to secure a lot more characters I want at a cheaper price. Sounds like a no brainer, right? I should obviously downscale. Now here's the problem. Almost the entirety of my collection is based in a chug scale, because as I grow up it's what's more readily available. It's what I've been collecting for 9 years, (since I got my first chug figure in 2014) and it is what keeps me sane in the chaos that is life. Transitioning would mean devaluing most of that collection. Every studio series figure that I own and love, scoop and hound, the figures that started this hobby for me and kept it going. My small but prized Optimus prime collection, my huge foot tall kitbashed shockwave that made me like customizing. All of it would be moot, but if I continued with chug, I feel like I wouldn't be able to enjoy this hobby to the extent I could. Please Help and give advice if you have any
I suggest enjoying the variety. Keep the stuff you already have and like…and start collecting a different scale if that suits you better in the long run. I pose Spiderman next to Godzilla next to Optimus Prime next to Hot Wheels. It’s a fun mess. And I don’t know what kind of legends scale figures you have in mind, but if you’re thinking 3P stuff, some of it is hella expensive! You’d get more bang for your buck with CHUG. Life is long, bro! There will be plenty of time to evolve your collection over time. Don’t be in a rush to complete it overnight. Enjoy the experience and don’t let it stress you out.
If I were to start, probably the kingdom core classes. i already have a few. They go well with hotwheels which is a big plus. Is use the modulators as they make good citybots. For tanks, id be fine with a larger deluxe scale. Jets as deluxes or voyagers.
Thank you. I plan to keep my current chug collection whichever direction I go. I might make a new shelf space for my prioritized in scale stuff. The problem with prioritizing is that the other collection wouldn't grow much... Also, my legends scale would start at core class for road vehicles, and then would branch out from there depending on real world vehicle size
That’s not a bad plan! The Hasbro core class stuff is a pretty good value. And don’t worry about missing out on or passing on stuff. There will always be more.
The MP seekers are about 1:60 in jetmode, so if that scale is your guideline, there are those. While the newest version, MP-52, are very expensive the older ones (MP-3/6/7 and MP-11) have become more affordable.
Welp, I've decided I, for the longest time, have tried to include every figure I own into a singular collection. I've decided that imma start a new shelf built of specifically small scale figures. Core class, micromasters, that kinda thing. It will be completely and utterly isolated from my other collection, which will be chug scale. Last but not least, when it comes to figures that are to big or to singular to act as parts of my chug collection, I will disperse them around my room as a form of decoration, rather than an expansive collection. I'm glad I've got this figured out for now. Thank you all for the help!
@DeathsTreads77 That's likely the best option, and I did the same thing: giving up the idea of one big collection and going for several different ones. An option to entertain: make them different. I have a small, but dedicated Legends collection (99% 3rd party) and the idea behind this is alternate deco's. Diaclone or G2 versions of characters I elsewhere have in the regular deco. That way I don't have multiple exactly the same versions in different sizes, because I find that kind of boring.
Unless you're going with official core class figures, Legends scale would likely fall outside of your budget. In saying that, you could collect both here and there, picking figures you really like, or even mixing and matching between core/legends for things like car bots and chug for things like tanks and jets. There's also some excellent KOs of 3rd party Legends scale figures out there that are a bit cheaper but still good quality, but the best of the 3p Legends (in my opinion) seem to run between $30-$50 a pop for an average sized character.
They're definitely a good option, I've been collecting them as well lately. They've got pretty much the whole Decepticon command crew out but some key Autobots are still missing. In saying that, I love the core class figures that have been coming out. Here's some pics of what I've got, it's official mixed with some 3p and KO. The best thing about Legends/Core scale in my opinion is the sense of scale you can get and having more space for larger characters like titans and combiners.
I did a 1:60 vehicle scale collection back in the day: lol giant Starscream, but kinda amazing how well the rest of the Movieverse fits I'm not quite sure how I'd go about this nowadays. Modern toylines tend to stick with just one scale, which happens to be a size class above this. Like, there are still some 1/60 vehicle scaled bots out there, sometimes, but I'm not sure how many you'd get before resorting to buying older toys. Granted vehicle scale-based collecting isn't about completing the cast, it's finding a neat thematic link between unrelated toys, like building a collection of only red robots or ones that turn into helicopters or whatever. There's a lot of fun potential collections in that TF Scale Project thread.
