I will definitely say that the jungle playset will never be a thing. Mostly because it looks like total and absolute shit.
My feeling at this point is that Origins is winding down and we've got about everything we're going to get. Ollie's is stocked full of unsold vehicles. They've got Wind Raiders stacked to the ceiling. Mattel has put out almost the entire original line by this point and the vehicles alone aren't going to carry the line. So while I'd love a Battle Ram or Dragon Walker, I just don't see it happening. Not unless they get announced REALLY soon. I'm disappointed that we didn't get more toy accurate colors in characters like Man-At-Arms, or get a true mini-comics Beastman, or that Mattel never seriously considered the Blackstar/Thundarr requests. But it is what it is.
I'm gonna guess we're going to see a Point Dread/Talon Fighter announcement since the cat is way out of the bag on that already. That or they're going to give away all the rest of those unsold TV 4packs via proof of purchase mail-in.
Some people are just looking under every damn rock they can find for signs the line is ending. Such a shame.
There's absolutely no way to tell. Galoob was bought by Hasbro, so Hasbro might own the toys, although the rights may have reverted somewhere else. I guess Dreamworks owns Filmation, and therefor probably, but not confirmed, own the cartoon. There's just no way for us to know. A lawyer with access to all the legal stuff would have to figure it out.
I mean, when they've made 90% of the original figures, I don't think it's going out on a limb to say they're nearing the end.
People have said this about Transformers before. Mattel could easily release a new He-Man with the Revelations "H" logo and many other characters with slight tweaks and updates. There's no reason for the line to just end.
Not to mention that at a minimum, Mattel has enough material between the 80s toys not made yet, known existing tooling, and that one awful, awful image to get another two years out of this line, before you look at stuff like New Adventures, more obscure 200x, or even pure Filmation. That’d be a hell of a way to revitalize the line. We’re at the tail end of the known quantities of the original line and the original Origins purpose, but we’re not certain how far Mattel will want to take the line.
My Tung Lashor that I ordered from BBTS arrived yesterday. Another great vintage MOTU figure to add to the collection.
We thought that Transformers Classics would end too, but it was profitable so it became Universe 2.0 then Generations. If Origins is profitable then Mattel will keep it going.
There were, I think, 72 figures in the vintage line, counting Wun-Dar. There are 19 of those figures we have no listing or release strategy confirmed for. That's over 25% left! I'm really not ready to give up at that point. Then there's the lost 1988 wave. We're at 4 out of 6. Then there's Powers of Grayskull. There's 3 major characters there. I feel like there's a solid year left in the line beyond this fall if we could get a focus on fundamentals. And Classics produced over 300 figures. So there's plenty of possibilities if they wanted to keep things open ended. We've ALREADY gotten a bunch of figures Classics never did. But my feeling is that cutting and running with 19 figures away from the vintage finish line would leave a sour taste. Particularly when people are actively struggling to get the current releases.
Exactly! Classic style He-Man and Skeletor have been absent from the line for years now so a slightly different version of those figures wouldn't be a terrible idea. Not to mention wave 2, 3, 4, 8, 9 and 10 have been hard for many to get. Just that alone is another year and a half. Longer if they mix in new figures fron NA, POP, 200X, Revelations and CGI.
Creatively, I can see tons of ways to go for years. Commercially, I don't have access to all the considerations. Maybe you could do deluxe releases of the early waves with slight changes, multiple heads, multiple hands, extra paint. I'll buy lots of cool stuff if Mattel will sell it. As a fan, if we do hit the end, I'll call it mission accomplished if we get the 72 vintage figures and an unrealized disappointment if we don't. And I think you could up and sell two made to order 8 packs, crowdfund the giants, and throw in a solo exclusive if you have to. But get it done!
