This is the general thread for the new James Gunn and Peter Safran "DCU".

Each show/film/project is fine to have its own thread, but this can stand for a general catch all.

    You know the drill.

    Fascinating.

I didn't expect Swamp Thing to return, or Creature Commandoes.

And love for Wildstorm is nice.

Also Gunn said for animation stuff, basically we will see characters from animated stuff go to live action and vice versa. And that those that voice actors that voice character in animation will transition to live action.

New DCU thread works. But yeah that’s probably what this will be for now.

From everything I'm reading around that is all "hearsay" and insider crap, Matt Reeves nor Pattinson want anything to do with an "MCU" situation. Reeves doesn't want his hands tied by 3x2 other movies continuities and Pattinson doesn't want the kind of commitment being RDJ would entail.

Sounds like he is keeping his Peacemaker stuff within the new Universe. Basically a way to keep his wife employed.

Overall I look forward to this.

Okay, so the movies seem interesting. I'm down for all of those and hope they turn out well. The one criticism I think I have here is starting with Damian as Robin as I've never cared for the little prat and think he doesn't work very well with his father. Would have preferred if they were going to jump past the first Robin that they'd have gone with Tim instead of Damian.

The Max series doesn't really sound interesting to me outside of Lanterns and Booster Gold. No interest in Themyscira before Diana... if I want stories about Amazons there's plenty of legit Greek myths I can get that fix from. Waller and Creature Commands don't really interest me as I'm not particularly a fan of Amanda Waller.

Which makes perfect sense. Especially since that's not what they signed up for originally.

On the one hand, I'm a DC fan and thus I'm interested.

On the other I really don't want to see a repeat of the previous attempt.

While some of those films sound like they have potential I've heard things about that upcoming Supergirl that make me raise an eyebrow. So... we'll see. I'd be happy to be proven wrong about any of my skepticism though.

Why would anyone choose to add Damien Wayne. Jesus

I’m willing to try Swampthing as I’m a huge fan of the comics, they’re gonna have to do something really special to make me watch these if they’re introducing Damien Wayne from the start.

Damien drives me nuts. He’s a terrible character and explaining him involved a whiteboard, thumb tacks, and yarn alongside a pretty crazy family tree.

That said this is an interesting slate. It seems to imply Batman and Superman are known established quantities in this universe.

...I'm giving the "new" DCEU a hard pass : WB had an established universe with its core titles and side world titles and they flushed it away. Nope I'm sorry trying 30+ films in to out MARVEL MARVEL by pulling a MARVEL is not just sad its pathetic on the studios end. That said a few of these projects sound promising the rest just no-no-no oh and keep your hands off Reeves Batman.

I think I'm fine with The Batman and any potential sequels it gets being it's own standalone universe. And from the sounds of it most of these are pretty standalone stories, even if they're part of a shared universe.

    I don't like this.

    We've heard the following:

"Snyderverse is not dead! It's coming back!"
"Snyderverse is dead! We're moving on and never looking back!"
"WBD wants nothing to do with Snyderverse. It's over, you need to move on. No, all future projects will have nothing to do with it."

And yet, we have Shazam! Fury Of The Gods (a sequel to a movie in which Superman clearly made a cameo appearance, thus making it Snyderverse.)
We also have Black Adam (in which Henry Cavill actually showed his face, as Superman in his cameo, thus making it Snyderverse.)
We have Aquaman coming up, soon, definitely a Snyderverse creation.
We have The Flash, at some point, also definitely a Snyderverse creation.
And now, Viola Davis is returning as Amanda Waller and the show will feature the Peacemaker crew (also Snyderverse, in case anyone was keeping score.)

Yet...we're rebooting Batman, again. We're bringing new blood and new stories into it. So...which is it?

Is this a reboot of everything and they truly will excise all previous material, or are they continuing Snyderverse in some fashion or another?

It would be one thing if Viola Davis was in the reboot ala Dame Judy Dench transitioning from Die Another Day to Casino Royale/et al (same character but new universe iteration), but the rest of the team being there kind of negates that.

Who is running this show, how did they get the role, and how do we fix this?

Look, I think Viola Davis is a tremendous actress, and from what I've seen thus far, an awesome human being. Seriously. But... she's gotta go. If they're truly going to reboot, the entire thing needs to be swept into the trash and they need to start over from scratch. Period. Tax write-off The Flash and Aquaman and Shazam!, all of it. Just start over but this time, make sure you have a cast that's willing to commit and make sure you have the right people in charge from the get-go.

Say what you will, but I'm starting to think Ray Fisher was right all along. (I believed his claims of being mistreated, don't get me wrong, but when he went after the higher-ups...I wasn't sure what to think. But then Walter Hamada was let go after the merger and I started to think that maybe, just maybe Fisher was 100% correct in his statements and assessments of things.) I get the feeling WB was being run like a frat house, "National Lampoon" style, and now the new dean has moved in and he has to clean it up.

FFS, what a mess. Can we just either fix the Snyderverse and I mean really fix it, or can we just start from scratch? Clearly, the DCU isn't working as-is. Honestly, if they would just go ahead and end the DCU entirely, no more connected movies, just one-offs or separate universes like The Batman is... I think that would work better. Yes, I get that DC has a rich and deep history as Marvel does, but sometimes one works better on paper than it does in reality.

It doesn't help that the DCU wants to get so dang dark. I miss the days of the Reeve/Routh Superman where it was positive and he actually stood for something. (MoS was pretty good, don't get me wrong. Making him more "human" and somewhat bitter at times in any and all sequels just kind of ruined him.) I'd like a DCU where they start with something positive and wholesome and work their way up from there. Follow the MCU blueprint, to the letter, be an idea thief if you have to, but my gosh end this as it is, now.

The Snyderverse is gone. I don't know what to tell you.

I guess if it makes it clearer for you, it seems that Aquaman and The Suicide Squad (plus its spin-offs) could be considered canon to both universes, the way Bumblebee is sort of a prequel to TF07 but mostly a reboot. That seems entirely because Momoa, Davis, and Robbie are popular, unproblematic actors it doesn't make sense to ditch yet.

Fury of the Gods and The Flash are both movies that started production before Gunn got the job. Black Adam is a movie that finished its theatrical release before Gunn arrived, so I don't know why it's mentioned here at all.

This is just a much more aggressive version of what Hamada would have done after the Flash we're he still in charge. Reboot what didn't work (Batman and Superman, for instance) and keep what did. I don't think two simultaneous Batman franchises at the same time is a good idea, but that doesn't automatically mean they won't be movies I'll enjoy.

I mean, this looks like a solid start, a very solid start.

Hopefully these Chapter’s can work as well as the MCU’s phases.

I’m interested in seeing if he gets to finish his vision. WB essentially blew up the synderverse 2.5 movies in. Anyone think that he gets much time if his plan falls apart or a movie stumbles? And coordinating TV and movie stuff is something marvel only recently figured out. I hope he gets to let it all play out but I’ve got doubts they’ll stand by him if his DC movies do worse than GotG has done.

I’m going to reiterate that Wonder Woman, Flash, and Shazam actually succeeding was the worst outcome for DC. If those had bombed it would have been a clear break. Because they worked the DCU is in this weird semi-reboot place that Gunn has to work with.
