I really hope the final product doesn't look that jittery.

 

It will. The low-framerate look is the "in" thing to varying degrees of success.

 

Wait, that's on purpose?  

Imagine going to school to be an animator just to be told it is okay to halfass your talent by making it look like dogshit on purpose.

 

After watching many CGI anime, more on the Kaiju side, this low-frame animation is the best choice for going for the large and heavy objects as it conveys the mass and weight of said designs and it works best when it's used next to 2D animation because going on higher frame rate will clash heavily side by side and will give it an unnatural weightless object floating on air feel instead of simply walking and shaking the ground, which is what many CGI mecha anime has made, but Godzilla Earth, Singular Point, SSSS.Gridman and Pacific Rim The Black made it work.

 

And that is a perfect example of why CGI anime sucks.

 

Hate to say it, but I agree.

I can think of maybe one or two times "low framerate CGI" has looked decent. One was Spider-verse, since the framerate changes with the action and it blends with the highly animated style to give the feel of traditional animation blending with 3D, ad the other was Singular point, since the CGI was being placed next to traditional cel, so the intent was for the CG to match the framerate of the actual animation.

Oh, and Tron: Uprising, since again the framerate changed depending on the action, and the idea was that the show takes place in an old-ass computer, so the faster paced the characters moved the less smooth their movement. (and it still had plenty of moments, like slow-mo, derezzing, or any vehicles, where the framerate was perfectly smooth. It wasn't just a cop-out)

And even then I can't honestly say if those examples had higher framerates they wouldn't look better. Maybe Spider-verse, because again that movie was just incredibly visually fidelic with multiple framerates for emphasis. The vast, vats majority of CGI anime that resort to this trick look, IMHO, unappealing. Especially if there's no traditional 2D alongside it.

That doesn't make any sense. By that logic any CGI animation to feature something large at a high framerate would look weightless, which it doesn't. It's still "floating on air" no matter how many frames per second it's running at. I've never dropped frames playing a video game and thought "oh wow this feels so much more realistic."

It doesn't make things look larger or weightier, it makes them look cheaper and less convincing.

 

My review for the finale to All Hail the King:

 

This is over 2 hours long, so I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet. But they talk with one of the artists that worked on Godzilla: The Series. He seems like a chill guy.

 

Having just watched all of Velma season 1, I needed to go back to some quality animation. So I’ve resumed my Godzilla: The Series watch. Just finished watching DeadLoch, Competition & Bug Out. All solid episodes. Really enjoyed them. Got the big monster wars 3-parter up next.

 

Finished disc 2 of 4. Well into disc 3. Just finished Juggernaut, Shafted, & Trust No One. Three monsters in a row that were shape-shifting masses of goo. Somebody really liked T2, especially with the liquid silver monster. But even so, I’ve been enjoying the show. It’s really gotten good.

Darn it. Looks like I'm going to miss it since I will be on vacation. However, I'll be in Japan, so I guess it's OK.  

 

Well, I finally finished Godzilla: The Series. I don’t know why I had such a hard time starting it the first couple times, but third time’s the charm, I guess.

I did notice this weird phenomenon throughout most of the show. They would have a fast- paced, tense situation or a battle going on, but the music wouldn’t reflect that. The music would still be fairly mellow. I remember several instances where I thought the action felt weirdly slow considering what was going on, and I’m certain it was the music that sabotaged those scenes.

That aside, I ended up really liking this show & the cast. I still think they did Audrey dirty by making her a cutthroat reporter, that used Nic all the time to get a good story. Wasn’t the point of her character in the movie, that she could be nice and still succeed?

At least by the end of the series, they gave her a few episodes, where she got to really be a good guy & help out the HEAT team.

The monsters in this show were pretty good. It is a shame that they couldn’t get any of the other TOHO monsters to add in, but it’s cool that G98 Jr gets an entire rogues gallery all his own. The king cobra monster is a big standout for me.

In the ep where most of the team gets caught in a storm on the ocean that sends them to the future, I did like that Mendel wasn’t all bitter & resentful towards them disappearing. So many time travel shows play that card, so it was nice to see him calm, understanding & happy to have them back. As a scientist, he was like “I figured it had to be something like a time storm.” Just all chill about it.  

Anyway, glad I finally watched the entire show. It was definitely worth it.

 

Too bad mothra got her ass kicked as an extra….

 

Definitely a hidden gem amongst Godzilla media, a shame it was short lived. Had to compete with the likes of Pokémon.
