Now let’s see how much money is getting cut from the higher ups pay… I mean obviously if they’re letting all these people go their pockets will be hit, too? Right? They’re not just going screw over 1 000 people and feel none of it personally, certainly? They wouldn’t do that, would they?

Wait. Entertainment One is up for sale now?
So that entire purchase was pointless.

    Oh. Since November.
    And nobody is biting.

Also, part of their plan is to lean into stuff like DnD? Well given their recent OGL fiasco they’re making some changes… just not the right ones. Primus almighty hopefully one of these days they make a good decision.

Well why would anyone want to buy when Hasbro's keeping all the valuable IP for themselves? They'd just be buying liabilities.

This never would’ve happened if you people didn’t complain about OGL 1.1.

    People complaining about high prices.

Hasbro: Okay we’ll just lay off a bunch of our workers, keep the prices the same (or higher) and hopefully make even more of a profit to appease the higher ups and shareholders and give THEM more money. Oh wait what were you complaining about again?

It’s okay guys because free market capitalism is good!

They are already doing it. They gave the complete license (Master License) of lesser-value brands to some other companies.
    • Stretch Armstrong = Character Group
    • Micro Machines = Jazwares
    • Tonka = Basic Fun
    • Fur Real = Just Play
    • Littlest Pet Shop = Ink Global
    • Easy Bake = Just Play
Those are just a few and were with Hasbro not too long ago. Hasbro will cash the royalty while manufacturing and marketing are done by the licensee.

Can't help but wonder if the recent exodus of D&D Beyond subscribers hasn't made this situation even worse.

Ah yes genius, keep slashing toy budgets, increasing prices, and firing workers. Who could have seen that coming from their totally not insane goal of a 50% profit increase in only a few years.

    Overpriced toys.
    Smaller size.
    Hollow everything out.
    Crap paintjob.
    Lazy designs.
    Wasteful and manipulative 'Build-a-figure'
Exposed packaging causing theft/destruction resulting in missing parts. (Pandering to green agenda)

Of course the sales are going down. I've cut my purchase by over 80 percent over the years, but my ability to buy them is going up. I just decided not to put up with Hasbro's attempt to stiff their fans and customers.

Hear that Hasbro ? I actually have more money and I could afford your stuff but I decided not to because you're insulting tf fans/customers like me.

I would rather the TF franchise get destroyed than have my loyalty taken advantage of.

Its 1000 jobs so its a lot. I wonder if companies were just waiting to do cuts but they avoided doing it because of bad publicity during COVID.

The real licensing profit should be coming in off merch, video games, and movies. Hasbro just sucks at picking partners for those.

By most accounts, D&D and Transformers are about to get their clocks cleaned by Barbie next year and Mattel is showing double the percentage net profit that Hasbro is, despite being otherwise similar sized companies.

I think a big part of it is that Mattel dominates a lot on higher margin kids toys and Hasbro's dominance is on costlier brands that skew older.

I think cutbacks are a mistake overall.

Look: there's a worker shortage so workers have more bargaining power for higher wages. And if these workers were so unproductive, why didn't you lay them off a year or two ago? You can't tell me that cutting 1000 jobs is going to be surgically limited to unproductive employees in the same way that smaller quarterly reviews would be.

Bottom line: you do this and you lose operational capacity which will cost you marketshare. In a best case, maybe you shudder some unprofitable international offices and become an import good in Argentina.

But if you cancel lines, in the short run, Playmates is going to claim those pegs for reissues. They already are in the latest resets. And the next step is going to be folks like Vala, Bossfight, and Spero partnering with McFarlane, Spinmaster, or NECA as distributors to take over your pegs. The longer term is McFarlane buying those guys out and owning you on marketshare.

First they tried to raise prices and that didn't work because our wages weren't going up to cover more purchases with inflation.

Now they want to reduce labor but they can't pay less because there's a worker shortage. So they're shrinking the operation to fund dividends and stock buybacks to placate investors.

But that will cost them marketshare as they axe products and rivals take their place.

A real CEO like Bezos or Jobs would tell the investors to cool their jets, that buybacks and dividends are off the table for the foreseeable future, labor costs will go up, prices are fixed by consumer price sensitivity, and that longterm investors will see the value in that decision in 10-20 years but they aren't here to please speculators.

I still think Hasbro could stand to improve its profits. Mattel's net profits are double what Hasbro's are. But the goal should be to match Mattel while gaining marketshare, not do a bunch of shuffling around to give investors a quick return who aren't willing to stick around for a year or two of possible declines while the deck gets reshuffled.

And institutional investors know this is BS. Hasbro's stock dropped 9% after they announced it. Just come right out and say that the Q4 numbers are going to suck, that 2020 had outrageous demand that can't be replicated by year over year growth, and that long term numbers are what matter and that you own as much IP as many production companies, which can dramatically increase returns if you manage your IP better.
