Considering that this is a tv live action it looks quite good. I would have liked some Takarazuka style makeup on Heinel but the costume design is spot on.
There probably will be, especially if Toei will try to market this outside of the Philippines... One thing to note here though, is that in Japan, Voltes V is "just another Super Robot show" and isn't as popular as, say, Mazinger Z. But in the Philippine context, Voltes V is regarded with near legendary status, almost as a cultural icon. Filipinos are VERY crazy about Voltes V, so much though that sometimes I believe we're actually the source of scarcity of Voltes V toys in the market. Japan won't probably go this far in making a live action adaptation of Voltes V, but to the Philippines, this is essentially a holy grail type of production. I just hope that the network doing this handles this well, as the current track record of their in-house shows haven't been really what you would call "stellar", at least to the more... discerning viewers. jya na!
Well, in Japan Voltes was still considered an innovator regarding themes and narrative in a robot show. As you said it was more popular in foreign markets (aside from the Philippines it was also big in Italy), but less popular in Japan than the spiritual predecessor Combattler V. However things changed a lot in the recent decade and it can even be said that in Japan Combattler merchandising doesn't sell well while Voltes is one of the most successful classic robot in terms of merchandising as far as Bandai is concerned. Why? Demographic changes. Combattler V nostalgia was higher because it aired first but more and more people got out of the collecting hobby as they approached middle age and sales of recent Bandai offering of the robot tanked. Conversely Voltes V was rediscovered by anime enthusiasts that were not even born when Voltes was aired and appreciated more the narrative innovations and the visceral animation style. The lesson is that the things we like don't die with us, but are part of a vast history that's now at the fingertip (entire series available on streaming, massive dedicated wikis etc) of new generations. This causes popularity shifts and i am glad that Voltes was reevaluated and appreciated by a new audience.
The head writer is already fighting with fans who have raised concerns about the addition of the love story angle in the show. The show's run is 80 episodes vs the 40 episodes in the original. Where will they get additional material to pad an additional 40 episodes? Some VVL defenders are already using the "If you criticize the show, then you are not a true fan" argument. Some sellers are already taking advantage of the hype selling the mini action VV at twice the price at SRP.
Honestly, that person is just an inflammatory person. Instead of keeping quiet and let the work speak for itself, that person had to go out on Social Media and insult everyone, and then suddenly be surprised at all the negative reactions from it. If you ask me there's a WHOLE lot of directions you could go to mine for material, there's the off-world plotline, the plight of the resistance on both worlds, possible ramifications of a PMC having unrestricted access (with light supervision) to what is basically a giant walking WMD... the possibilities are endless. It's just that, *sigh* doing teen romance subplots is what hooks the watching masses... Social media does that to everyone. We've had that argument everywhere before. If I had a peso every time someone called me "not a true fan" for liking the 2007 TftM robot designs, i would have made decent amount... Hype is real... lol jya na!
And you can bet trying to buy that in the Philippines will really cost you as that was a HEAVILY scalped toy, despite how expensive that thing was.. And now there's even demand for a possible SoC, SRC, or even an Plamo kit of the new V5 from this series (I'd say the Infinitsm line would be a good fit, and wouldn't be surprised if that's where this V5 draws inspiration from). That's how Voltes V crazy Filipinos are. jya na!
Well, I'm glad I bought the Mini Action Toys Voltes V when I did. I missed all the SoC releases so that was my consolation prize. As far as the 5 minute trailer...well...it does look like one step up from Super Sentai but not much better than that. But I do like me some Super Sentai...I just wouldn't want to pay money to see it.
Gundam Seem to have become a more popular mecha trend than mazinger not to mentioned 4 gundam statues.
