I don’t think you were really “picking up what I’m putting down”. Gunn’s new movie may have a “story” set as Superman as a teen, but I will bet anything it’s going to be in the context of modern movies.
In theory, Snyder wasn't the problem as I think he's great at concept/story and visuals. But he never should have been in the position of unchecked power with the keys to the kingdom. He needed someone to check his ass and give him a solid Hell No! Lol. Goyer wasn't that guy as him and Snyder are too similar in their mindset towards superheroes. Nolan could've done it but he moved on. But yeah, it'sfrightening how badly managed the DCEU is/was. Especially if you followed the news and press. I remember how Superman 2 merely had a Batman cameo, and then Luthor and it just ballooned from there into BvS introducing WW and Doomsday and starting the Justice League. In one movie. Smh. Morrison's All-Star Superman is arguably the best modern Superman story and one of my favorite Superman stories. If they adapted that, I'd be ecstatic. Grant wrote a Superman story of hope, heart, camp, action and brainy concepts into a huge stew that's like a love letter to Superman's mythos.
To me one thing that killed the DCEU is instead of changing some things but overall sticking to their plans they completely changed the direction they where gonna go with due to the reactions to BVS which is how we ended up with JL 2017 and the directionless DCEU.
So here’s my thoughts on this, I loved Cavil as Superman and I also liked the DCEU more than most (mainly the Snyder stuff, love ZSJL). But unfortunately I feel like at this point a reboot is the best choice of action. So I’ll keep a open mind for whoever our next Superman is. Yup. Say what you will about Snyder and his direction - good or bad (personally I liked it), but at least overall he had a end goal out. Up until now with Gunn coming in, WB didn’t have one and doing was doing whatever.
ZSJL could've been trimmed a bit more still but having said that, I absolutely loved it as well. I give BvS grief for a few things but I'll defend the Snyder cut to my grave. It's so unabashedly Zack but it works specifically because it's unabashed Zack. Like a pure hit of uncut Coke. . How Whedon got the theatrical cut from that three fourths of the completed film is mind boggling. But I probably shouldn't blame Whedon too much as the Suits told him to lighten it up and make the movie he did. I think I'm going to treat MoS, BvS and ZSJL as a trilogy and turn it off after that epic group shot that looks like an Alex Ross painting on film. It sucks to cut out the epilogue but if we're never getting the last two movies then I'd rather end it on that note than the epilogue. Re: reboot. Yeah, they kinda have to. I do wonder tho' if Ezra Miller didn't Ezra Miller would they have went forward with the planned Flashpoint and soldiered on.
Agreed, it could definitely be trimmed a bit but yeah I loved it and would do for the most part the same as well. Yeah I blame him and mainly WB suits for that “thing”. Yeah it’s best to do that. It does suck cause those other two JL films would have been so cool. Very possible, but even then it’s always possible this would have been the result since at the time Gunn and Safran where not in charge.
I just realized that we're not in the DCEU thread. I didn't mean to sideline the thread. So, on topic: I think Gunn will work well being WBDC's Feige so to speak. He knows the source material being a big comic fan and it's not like he's going to direct every movie in the near future, he's going to provide an outline moving forward and get the creative to best realize that plan. Folks out here thinking Superman is going to be like Suicide Squad or something. Directors can change gears you know.
Agreed, from everything I’ve seen him say be is definitely a fan of this stuff (Batmite being a favorite of his) like he is for Marvel and I think learning what he’s learned from Feige he’ll do good at DC and also just coming in with a 10 year plan and just doing whatever. Also yeah he can change his style and I think he definitely understands that his style of humor and style fits every character. Also that he’s writing not directing the film. I look forward to hearing more about there plans (which he will discuss some on in January or so). Wishing nothing but the best for them and DC.
You know if James Gunn wants a slightly younger Superman in a story that focuses on him being Clark Kent the reporter and presumably fights Lobo at the end, there is a perfect comic to adapt:
No what killed the DCEU was that their first offering was a huge flop and they like to pretend that MoS was the first one. MoS was the second.
Ahhhh yes. Green Lantern. I mean, if I had that movie on my resume, I'd pretend it didn't happen too. . It's strange to me that DC owns outright all their properties, don't have the hurdles that Marvel has to go through for their titular characters (they don't need Sony's permission to use Superman for instance) yet they have such a rough history of making a Movieverse. Having a younger Superman doesn't automatically mean origin story (tho' I don't want an origin story either). Both No Way Home and The Batman focused on them being heroes and not how they started thankfully. No slo-mo pearls or Uncle Ben so they very well could do Superman without the rocketship/Krypton/Smallville.
Or if they do, they can cover it in less than five minutes, sort of how All Star Superman devoted all of four panels to it before just getting on with the show.
Warhammer 40,000 Rights Secured by Amazon Studios, Henry Cavill Set to Star and Executive Produce - IGN Called it. See he isn’t unemployed.
Well I have good news for everyone that doesn’t know. It’s not a origin movie. He’s already Superman and at the Daily Planet.
