Would anyone be interested in something like this? Give the figures very strong toy inspired details, shapes, etc. but updated with cleaner transformation, less awkward proportions, better articulation, and stick them in the MP scale. Whether official or 3p, this is something I'd personally like to see someday This picture below was traced off the animation model for Optimus Prime and then proportions slightly altered to better match the G1 toy. I didn't finish all the way to the left of the image because frankly, I wasn't sure I could get the level of detail to match up on both sides lol. But this is essentially what I would hope for in the bot mode of the figure. Dynamic proportions that are pleasing to the eye, but shapes and details directly lifted from the G1 toys into the modern day
Not really. My favorite era of MP was when they were simply the best possible version of the character. Not slavishly Sunbow and not slavishly toy, but something new and better.
^ This. MP should be the “ultimate” version of the character, mixing in toy/toon/comic aesthetics and making the best distillation of them. Skids pretty much hit it out of the park, most of the modern MP make me want to barf. Can’t believe how bad Jetfire is yuck most of the classic toy designs are just either too weird or lacking in the spark of personality that the fiction instilled in them. (Which makes sense as they were meant to be piloted mecha)
I'm a huge G1 fan and agree. The Sunbow models are overly simplistic and slavish devotion results in a really boring looking toy. Not a fan of fake parts either (Sunstreaker, etc.).
That's my preference as well. But toy-inspired MPs would be a change of pace, and still better than the Sunbow stuff.
The difference in design between MP-21 and MP-45 is the textbook example of what I think is perfect (MP-21) and very flawed slavish cartoon accuracy (MP-45).
I was only just thinking today I'd love to have essentially the G1 toys, but with improved articulation. I'd even be happy to have stuff like fists having to be removed for transformation.
I probably wouldn’t buy any of them, but I’d be all in favor of TT doing this. The OG toys are fantastic designs and I can imagine many fans would eat this up. Nice sketch btw!
I will most certainly never buy a single MP figure of the main crews as I'm pretty much done for all characters and the general stuff, and for anything that would be MP would be oversized anyways to go with the mainline stuff and wouldn't fit in anyways. That said, I did get the GCreation Dinobots because they were the G1 toy inspired figures, and as they kinda are MP type figures, they filled that "hole" of my desire of getting larger voyager+ sized versions of these guys and because I got these, I wouldn't have any interest for any that Hasbro would do. I would love to see more G1 toy inspired figures in general and many from the mainline was going in that direction for a while but the cartoon esthetics took over and that was were I checked out from the newer stuff, but then, I had no desire or plan to replace most of the figures I have been getting in the last few years, and with the constant price increases, it wouldn't be worth it to me anyways. But for anyone that hasn't gone down that rabbit hole already, such an option would most certainly be great for them.
As a limited run, maybe. Some of them could be fun. I’ve seen a custom G1 Optimus that had been updated with modern articulation and a nice paint job. It was fun looking, but still derp as fuck. Lol. I’d like to see them do that with G1 Ironhide. It would probably attract at least two or three other people…haha. I’d like to see more Hasui-style Masterpiece figures. MP Skids was a nice departure from the super toon style. Take the best things about the old toys and the toon and come up with a premium figure that is attractive, sturdy AND fun to play with. I think MP Sideswipe, the Datsuns and even Tracks did a great job of that. Yes, I like MP Tracks!
It would be cool if there was a line maybe in between Generations and MP scale where not only do they look like the toys, but they lean into the materials of that time, like lots of diecast, vacc chrome, and decent stickers.
Nice drawing. It makes a heavily toy inspired look less awkward than some other attempts I've seen. Agreed with this. The Sunbow animation was rarely if ever the best looking design of the characters. In most cases during G1 this was the box art. But the Hasui/Hybrid era of MP is still my favourite. It was definitely based on the animation model, but added details from the toys, real life and other sources. For those who only want Sunbow, it was less interesting. But for me the Sunbow cartoon was never important. It was a fun 25 minute moment once every week...but the comics I read over and over and every day I saw my toys. Thus for my nostalgia, I want to see elements from the toys. But only elements. Despite loving customs where people add joints to the G1 toys so they're more articulated, I don't want the G1 toys recreated as MP's. That's the same as making the animation models MP's. It should be a mix. However, should they make this, I'd probably buy a couple: Prowl and Hot Rod for sure, likely a Soundwave. Not many, but still more than Sunbow MP's.
I stopped collecting the MP line when the direction started focusing on Sunbow. It wasn't that I didn't find them interesting, but they just didn't fit in with anything but themselves arsthetically. Also, the price bump and QC drop took me out of the game.
Well one of the major things I would want to see on a Bumblebee in this line would be to have all 4 wheels on his arms
Well I was actually thinking about him too. He could have an interesting design that doesn't look awful. Just have his windshield extend up in front of his face and base his face off of the original sticker that vaguely resembles a face Think of Animated Ironhide's Earth mode concept art, or this person's art I found online for an idea of what I mean for his chest
