True. It's all in the eye of the beholder.

If you're into G1 I think the magic square version has the most accurate G1 design, and overall it's the best value since it has so many display options. I've been tempted to get it many times, but I still like hasbro's version better, as I like the stylized Legacy G1 interpretation, that and I love all the small molded details from hasbro.

Bingo. Hasbro hasn't gone after 3p for infringing on their IP only because they are such small operations that paying the lawyers costs more than the financial loss of competing products.

But riddle me this Batman; if it's alright to just rampantly infringe on another company's IP, why hasn't EVERY official Bumblebee toy been a VW beetle? Because VW would sue Hasbro out of existence for using the likeness of their product without their permission. And that permission costs a pretty penny.

Or, theres also the fear that if Hasbro were to take one of these companies to court, and lost, it would open the floodgates to actual harmful infrignement.

Argueing about the “bad” of 3P does about as much as 3P does to damage the brand, which is to say practically nothing. There is a market and a demand, and Hasbro sees it and ignores it. Hasbro also sees the companies rising to fill the demand for that market, and they do nothing about it. Mostly likely because….. it doesn’t hurt anything. At the end of the day. Hasbro is a company that cares more about protecting it’s own markets globally then it does the niche interests of some nerds.

If it did, or a company tried to directly compete with Hasbro, Hasbro would send them a Cease and Desist. This is what happened with Zeta’s Cell/Unicron. They revealed it at the same time as Hasbro’s big push for Haslab Unicron and it was direct competition, so Hasbro sent them a C&D to stop it until the Haslab campaign was over…. But Cell has been re-released and repainted several times now, and Hasbro has allowed it to happen.

A lot of people want to pretend like 3P is this great evil that is a scourge to the franchise. But you’ve got to realize, Hasbro is an international billion dollar company that has access to so much resources and demographic data. If these companies were hurting the brand, they would know and they would step in. BBTS and other big retailers would not be allowed to sell 3P figures otherwise having their agreements with Hasbro be terminated, sites like TFsource, ChosenPrime, and ShowZ would also be sent Cease and Desist letters. And this is all for a company that operates globally and makes millions upon millions of dollars each year. So court fees to take these small time companies to court would be chump change.

No. You insulted some guy who made his own figure just to get back at a crowd you are biased towards and hate. Get over it. You can convince yourself all day the thing you don’t like is the devil, that doesn’t make it true.

Something similar happened with DC back in September, where they lost a trademark dispute in Chile.

I get your point about IP infringement and I do see a problem if it's a straight up KOs, but to the point about "likeness", it's a lot more to it than that. How much likeness does it take before it's considered as an outright infringement?

This reminds me of how sports cars look similar to one another. You can say that one company is copying another, or you can say that they were inspired by each other's designs. But to the sports car enthusiasts, does it matter? It's not like the addition of a new design means the end of an existing one. I guess you can argue that it does harm the original design in the sense that people chose the alternatives more, but that's basically the result of the free market, in that people are free to choose the better/more popular options (factor in personal taste etc.).

The way I see it, unless they are making straight KOs, 3Ps are basically fan art companies that make enhancements (upgrade kits) and/or higher quality (in terms of transformation complexity) transforming toys. They offer alternatives to the official version, something similar but different.

As to Bumblebee not being a VW beetle, you're right that's bc VW will sue if the likeness of the beetle are used without permissions. And it's pretty hard to get around car likenesses unlike the robot designs. So bottom-line it basically all depends on whether or not a company wants sue another to protect the likeness of their products.

I agree with Purple Heart that in the end, there's a market and demand for the 3P figures. If Hasbro put out one outstanding figures after another, improving on their designs learn from their mistakes with each release, then 3P would have nothing to offer and go out of business naturally/eventually. But the reality is, the rise of 3P and other upgrade kits (3D printed or not, big company or homemade projects) is the direct result of the many shortcomings of the official products, whether they hold the IP or not, flaws are flaws.

If there's no ugly gaps on hasbro figures, there wouldn't be gap-fillers from 3P or other 3D printing enthusiasts. If hasbro's TF all have poseable-hands, DNA's upgrade kits would not have sell as well IMO. And if hasbro's is pumping out masterpiece level combiners year after year, then 3P wouldn't stay in business for long.

Yeah that Cell ordeal was ugly. I get the reasons for the C&D, but it's still ugly. I'm glad that everything worked out for Hasbro's Unicron haslab, and I'm happy that Hasbro didn't dish out more C&D to outright cancel Cell or other 3P companies.

As far as Neko-bot77 insulting the home project guy, I don't think that was his intent, I think he was just offering his blunt opinion about that Breakdown prototype. Maybe it sounded a little mean bc he thought it's some 3P making it, but that's probably my bad since I didn't exactly cite the source/who made it in the original post.

In any case, I think the more the TF variations the merrier, even if I don't dig it, somebody else will. It's inevitable that people will have different opinions, as we all have different tastes after all.

Any chance Takara will take a crack at Legacy Breakdown? I REALLY want something that at least TRIES to resemble a Countach.

More like he just happened to end up sorta looking like that.
Mark did say he wanted to remold the canopy to be Countach like.
But whatever you need to tell yourself and all that.

I mean, I know what he’s meant to look like- a Countach- just saying that he looks like a Jalpa. So while he’s not a Countach, at least he still is a kinda- sorta - Lambo.

    chill.

Before unification maybe but post unification we had Volcanicus and Abominus getting some upgrades but after a long almost 2 years gap in between. Hope springs eternal no?:cry

But TF in Japan ain't really that hot over Gundam or Eva which Bandai has an iron grip on.

Hello everyone I just received my legacy evolution breakdown today and he has the same issue my wildrider has. So where the legs fold up into the back of the window of the car mode, it unfortunately took out a chunk of the clear plastic in the back as the tabs on the legs have nowhere else to go it had to dig it’s way in the clear Plasitc. I’ll show pics when I get back home, but has anyone else had this issue with there breakdown/wildrider ?

That’s unfortunate. I only transformed my Wildrider once but with no issues. Curious to see your pics

Got the pic here. It’s where the legs fold up in car mode, it’s all one line of solid plastic but the tabs have nowhere to shoot into.. so it took a bit of the clear plastic.
