Yep, despite what others may think, this wasn't the overwhelming success Hasbro wanted it to be. Fortunately for us, it was too big to fail.

 

They’ve already explained that the blue plastic is more durable than the yellow plastic, which is why they switched it for the gears.

I still disagree with that decision, as it’s not like I’m playing with this thing on a daily basis to be concerned about gear longevity vs display, but it wasn’t just a cost savings decision.

 

After everything was said and done, the only thing that bugs me is the mismatched upper and lower robot teeth. I wish a solution would have been found for that. The maw, while 'wrong' at least adds visual contrast, if it was solid orange without a sticker kit or lining it loses a lot of detail

 

for me the solution was simple. i just painted mine to match and never looked back. it was quick and easy and they came out fantastic. it only took like 20 mins to mask it all after that the rest was a breeze.

 

we had spoken before when i offered the extra that i have.

if you are looking for one i highly suggest you hop on a bot now or as soon as one comes up that is a reasonable price for you. the baseline for these is only getting higher and i can see it easily being 2500 for a uni by christmas.

 

Can I ask what brand of paint you used? I tried brush on acrylic but after two days curing it just falls off the waxy blue plastic when touched

He still isn't the bot style that I would have liked but I do regret not getting him at the original price, if only for the planet mode. Much happier with Studio Cell for bot... I do hope it gets KO'd because it's not worth half the aftermarket bids. I had a guy local who was selling for $800 but after three weeks of waffling on the meetup time, the morning we were FINALLY going to do the deal he changed his mind.

 

Because it's worth double the waffle price.

 

Toyhax made a sticker set for that it helps

 

For those who can't choke down spending over $1000 for the Haslab Unicron, there's always the Platinum Edition as an alternative. Unfortunately, he's also rising in value and running about $250 shipped now...but that's still a far cry from the Haslab pricing. At 14" tall, he's not Titan class but he'll still loom sufficiently over your collection, especially the Core Class figures.

 

Studio Cell is a nice “halfway” measure as well. 18-19 inches (So Titan-Combiner class), way more modern than the UT mold, and between $300-$500, depending on where you go. I have Pumpkin and he more than gets the job done. (Not to bash Haslabcron, he’s a gorgeous plastic beast as well)

 

Yes, I'm aware of that, thanks. I normally don't do stickers. I would have possibly made an exception in this case but in my opinion the stickers have way too much detail. I would have wanted just plain orange to match the orange on Unicron without any panel line details at all. The stickers also leave a bunch of grey gaps showing so it's not full coverage. I've also looked into the 3D printed maw covers but they don't look right either. The only option that will work for me is painting the maw and I'm still not sure I want to risk it. I bought a cheap airbrush and the paint colours required to match the colour. But I've never airbrushed before and I'm assuming it will be a pain to match the paint colour perfectly. So I will continue to procrastinate. Haha. Or just put him in bot mode so I don't see it. I bought the aftermarket light up eyes kit and I have yet to actually use it in bot mode. Only on his separate head.

 

Separate head? The head is not attached when you get him those eyes are a complete pain to install so they actually look like eyes often you get a lazy eye or he goes crossed-eyed, took me like a hour or 2 to get it just right. On a figure this costly i would not paint and especially not try painting for the first time hence the stickers in case you sell him (thinking reissue with non blue maw is possible in 3 more years....because super 7 just renewed his IP and they are keeping his IP alive for a reason) Stickers you can remove without damaging the figure so that alone for me is worth the investment to get the look because man i suck at painting.

 

Has anyone applied the Reprolabels for Unicron's wings? I bought the set but I haven't applied them. I'm kind of split as to whether they're going to look good or not and curious if anyone has pics of what they look like installed (beyond what Toyhax has on their site).

 

I got the SC version for this very reason. I also don't have $2,000+ to spend on a massive pile of plastic that I can't even fit in my apartment.

 

i have both at the moment. I have to say I like studio cell better. He looks closer to what unicron looked like and also ultimately the haslab one is just problematicly big.

 

i didn't even know that was actually a thing until you mentioned it.

but looking at their site it makes the sticker set look pretty sharp. i am also curious if anyone here has applied the set as well.

 

Even as someone who finds mawgate very cringe I find that set tempting.
