Yeah, there's a HUGE contrast between the 'attitude' of Peter Jackson and that of Amazon towards Tolkien's Middle-Earth canon.

The fact is, the Middle-Earth canon is so detailed and specific that there are entire SETS of books written about it, covering the lands, the peoples and their history (and even their languages) of Tolkien's creation.

Yet just like Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm who wanted to ignore, and basically destroy Lucas's legacy - (which she basically admitted to), Amazon's showrunners pretended all that decades old lore didn't exist, and worse, tried to convince everyone else of the same (that's a little tricky to do when the other side knows far, far more about the subject than you ever will).

But, for me, and millions of other Tolkien fans, that's what it comes down to, the lies, the arrogance, the laughable attempts at deception, the open contempt for the canon and everything and everyone associated with it (basically everyone from the fans, to Peter Jackson, to Tolkien himself) - that is not an attitude that wins the hearts of the fans.

The fact is, many people probably will watch this. But Amazon have already driven away many, many others who might have also done the same.

You DON'T spend a billion dollars on the rights to a franchise, and then deliberately set about engineering things in a way that alienates a significant proportion of the original fanbase.

People might forgive a few mistakes here and there. But NOT when they KNOW it was ALL done on purpose.

 

Yeah, if I was to invest as much money as they are I would want to attract as many freaking people possible. No, you won’t make everyone happy, but you have to try. And I have to agree- there does seem to be an arrogance at play here to deliberately alienate people when every effort should be trying to attract them.

 

Especially when the people from power claim to be the experts of Tolkien lore, when pretty much the majority that’s been silenced most likely know more than them. Hell, then even silenced the true experts (the guy from the Tolkien society and Peter Jackson; I said it, these fuckers make m night shyamalan look like an expert for avatar the last airbender).

that Bakshi film has received so much hate and disgust over the years, people DEFINITELY complained…about every part of that movie. I liked it when I was….5 maybe?

 

I think they didn't say as much because we get introduced to Sam not long before.

 

Trailer is fine. But I’m not hyped at all.

 

Yeah, I learned that lesson after what Kathleen Kennedy did to Star Wars (fortunately Favreau and Filoni are working on fixing that - even if it involves time travel).

In any case, we already know of Amazon's attitude towards Tolkien's creation and the fans.

I've got no intention of supporting something like that.

Filoni only cares about his OCs, everything else he has no problem going along with Kennedy, etc.

 

I'm not watching anymore trailers. I'll give this show a try in the next couple of weeks and see how it fares. I've aired all my concerns at this point. Now it's just time to sit back and wait for the train to see if it goes off the rails while it passes by...and if it takes out the water tower, the train station, kills a few bystanders and then explodes...
