On the one hand I appreciate what they're doing here, even if I continue to be disappointed by the watered down cartoon aesthetic. I like that they have brought new things to the way these transform.

That said, they all seem just a touch off. Grimlock's backside is too thick, his chest plate too dark, and those missing teeth. Slag's hollow horns and pitiful rear legs and that cheap looking gray plastic they use for the horns. Sludge has those rubber flaps, crappy joints, and a stubby tail. And now we know that one reason Slag and Grimlock got shortchanged is so they could include two crappy accessory figures that were going to be replaced in a year anyway. God bless the third party add on kits for helping bring these figures closer to their full potential.

Yeah, it needs a better paint job to help bring out that detail.

These Dinobots have been fantastic in my opinion. Sure I'd have loved the swords, but again they didn't have them in the anime. I really, really hope they find a way to keep the same quality with Snarl and Swoop. Swoop must have his wing missiles, something they haven't done since the original.

These behind the scenes commentaries are great. It gives a lot of insight into the process, and also supports (IMO) the notion that not all Studio Series figures are "just overflow from Generations." Some (such as they described for Scourge) are clearly designed with a heightened emphasis on accuracy to the movie when planned for SS86 releases.

That being the case, while I know most people won't see it as necessary given Earthrise and Kingdom already existing, I'd love for the two most prominent G1 characters featured in the movie to get Studio Series 86 releases: Prime and Megatron.

Frankly, I want to see every single one of these characters get a mold or at bare minimum a redeco that looks as good as Studio Series 86 Wreck Gar does, or aims for that at least. I know it won't happen but I can dream dammit. :lol

At some point, maybe a few years maybe a year, I’d put money on us getting a Commander class Prime. We’re simply begging for one where neither Prime nor the trailer is short changed.

I can hope. I say do it and then retool it into a functional Commander PMOP. But that's for another thread. :lol

The details translated over but not the proportions. But that’s probably a function of what it actually takes to get both of the modes to work

I feel you but thank Primus he's on the case because the details that are carried over onto the final toy are IMO what prevents the final figure being way too 'Toon slavish and bland.
It gives me hope that Snarl will have a decent head with what's been pulled off with Sludge's here, as, at least IMHO, Sludge & Snarl are level-pegging for how awfully their toy heads suffer in their model sheet simplifications, and at least this compromise design still looks good, and not as goofy/lunkish as the show model.
Got my fings crossed that Snarl gets a bit of reinstated cheek guard like Sludge has here, as the bland, open-faced helmet of the G1 model sheet really is the equal worst interpretation of one of the coolest toy Dinobot heads!

    SS-86 Core Class Rumble

    Login • Instagram

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for joining us as we revealed a bunch of upcoming TF stuff!

I saw some questions popping up in various places and I'm going to do what I can to answer.

I'm going to start with SS Core Rumble (blue). The infinite transformer debate on what color this character is supposed to be, haha.

Since this is studio series, we followed the colors he had in the 86 movie.

This will be a quicker post and I'll follow up later with the development process posts.

He is about a head taller than the previous siege Battle Master but his tape mode is the same size. This allows for him to work with our Siege Soundwave and Kingdom Blaster.

The posts to connect his blasters are 3mm and those connect on his arms and his back.

His hands fold in so he can wield his pile drivers.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

    Thanks,
    -Evan

Do you think we will get a studio 86 bumblebee and Sunstreaker?

My prediction is that we’ll get an SS86 Optimus in the commander class for the 40th anniversary. It’ll be a new mold that takes a lot of cues from Earthrise but will be more animation accurate and better at hiding kibble (like 86 Hot Rod). It’ll have a bigger, better trailer and all the fixings.

ER Optimus is “good enough” for me but there’s always room to improve. And Hasbro -knows- we’ll always buy a new Optimus mold. They like to pretend that we aren’t suckers for these incremental updates but clearly we are because we’ve been scooping them up since WFC started.

I’d also be down for an SS86 leader class Megs but again, ER Megs is “good enough” too.

new BTS! SS Perceptor and Magnificus!

    Evan Brooks on Instagram

    Hello again, Transformer fans!

It's been awhile but I thought with the official drop for Magnificus that now was the time to talk about the creation of Studio Series 86 Perceptor!

Worked on this figure with the Mythical Kunihiro san who was the man with a plan. I always feel like Perceptor figures are given a bit of special treatment because of their connection to Yoke san.

You can see Kunihiro san's plan in marker as he skillfully lays out the proportions and conversion.

We had talked about if the Tank mode should be included since it wasn't featured in the animation but was in the Marvel comics. It's such a core feature of the previous versions of the character that we ended up including it.

Early in the design plan, you can see that the initial plan had a cavity in the front of the chest for the head. We realized that it would be odd to see Perceptor's black helmet be so visible when in his microscope mode so we changed where the head hides to his back.

For the details, Kunihiro san recommended we base them off the illustration that was used in the TT re-issue G1 figure. It's a beautiful drawing that has some great modern detail updates but still fits in well to the 86 G1 aesthetic.

The only other detail to bring up is the alt head. We were asked in the Roundtable event a few weeks ago on if we always put in an alt head with our characters. I can certainly say I always try to get one in there! When there's a big difference in the Animation head vs the g1 Toy head then I always try to get a toy accurate head in there for a future Redeco.

But anyway, let me know your thoughts on this figure! I certainly am glad we were able to make him as tall as we could get him at a DLX scale and really think he came out great.

    Thanks!
