As much as I dislike people replacing Peter Cullen’s portrayal as Optimus Prime, I really do like new takes on the character (ones that aren’t attempting to replace him, but add their own unique spin on him like Gary Chalk or David Kaye in Animated). One time I saw a Twitter post of a soundbite of Kieth David, and they were saying he would do an awesome Optimus Prime voice.

Although I love Peter Cullen and feel he should never be “replaced,” I’d love Keith David to do his own take on Prime.

 

I've been thinking the same thing on both topics for a while. Trying to imitate Peter Cullen instead of creating a new voice for the new characterization only results in shallow portrayals - Jake Foushee probably could have done a good Optimus if he'd been allowed to use his more natural register instead of trying to go for Cullen's deeper voice. Instead, we got Cyberverse/WFC Optimus, who just sounds cringey. As to Keith David's take on Optimus, you could just have him draw on Goliath from Gargoyles and give him some good writing that lets him act as well or better than in Gargoyles and he'd be set.

I will always love Peter's performance for the 80's show.

That said, I'm sick and fucking tired of everyone trying to imitate him. Even the man himself sounds like he's trying to copy his own work -it's ridiculous!

It's why Chalk's Primal and Kaye's Prime are so good. They sound like Optimi, but still do their own thing.

I can't stand Jake Foushee's Prime. I just can't. Ironically enough, he makes for a good Nemesis Prime.

One of the only other people who's got the chops in my opinion would be Keith David.

Seriously, imagine Optimus sounding like Goliath.

 

As long as they let him act, let Optimus out of the box they've put him in, then a Keith David Optimus would be epic - and I don't use that word lightly.
