In a adult catered toy line, should play sets be included?

When I say play sets, I am referring to gasoline garage stations, put together city play sets, snap together train sets, race car sets. Any toys that break apart and form armor or weapons for the main toy. Open up castle play sets.

The whole purpose of a play set is to sit on the floor and spend hours re-enacting battles in a role play fantasty. Don't think adult fans do any of this. So why is it included in adult catered toy lines?

FWIW these play sets listed above are outdated play things from the Eighties. Most toy companies that make action figures have phased these out decades ago. Most companies that cater some toys towards collectors don't make play sets for the figures. So why did Hasbro return to this concept for WFC and Legacy?

As far as the return of split open trailer that do nothing but split open and sit there.
Fans from decades ago didn't want this. Instead they wanted the main robot figure to be made taller. Also fans from decades ago did not want to spend extra for a split open trailer.

As most know split open trailers are another form of a play set. Where it involves sitting on the floor for hours re-enacting role play fantasy battles.

FWIW play sets require more than one player. Since most adults don't share toys with anyone. It further renders plays sets for adults useless.

As far as attaching play sets armor parts to the main collector figure. No other companies fans catered toy lines offer this. So why is Hasbro?

I seriously think the new Hasbro team has no new ideas. Think all they do is pull from ideas from decades ago. That are for the most part outdated toy play patterns from decades ago.

The only adult catered Transformers toylines currently ongoing are Masterpiece and the lines from Super7. Despite what we like to think, even the Generations lines in recent years are designed first for kids. Adult collectors do not make up a large enough portion of the toy buying customer base to cater large amounts of toys to.

I'm 50. I use my citybots in city mode as playsets and staging areas for my comic. I've bought a LEGO road kit to use as scenery. Playsets add a wonderful dimension to display, staging and play, regardless of age. They help make the characters more real by letting collectors give them a world to inhabit.

So yes, playsets are very much needed in the "adult" line.

(The more I read your posts, the more familiar you seem. You wouldn't happen to be Deathy from ATT?)

Just to add the first reply in this thread and my opinion on this matter.

Think play sets belong back in the Eighties. As most kids don't play with play sets anymore in this day and age.

I just have a hard time picturing adult fans having play dates with other adult fans. Setting up these play sets. Then spending hours doing role play re-enacting battles.

Adding play sets in adult themed catered retail toy lines like WFC Legacy makes no sense.

Save the play sets for the Kiddie TF toy lines like Cyberverse, Rescue bots, bot bots and whatever.

C'mon Hasbro, can you please just stop. None of the other adult catered toy lines have toys ruined by this. like various Super heroes, Wrestling, He-man, Spawn, star trek, star wars, G I Joe, Dragon ball, whatever.

Instead of play sets or armor parts bots. Why not just throw more money into the singular figure most care about.

Yes. See Super 7 Snake Mountain for reference, for example. There are plenty of other examples out there. People (even adults) want display pieces to help build out the world in which their action figures live. I 3D printed this whole fuckin’ thing, lol…

I am an adult (43) and love playsets. My kids (9 and 5) love my playsets. I recently brought down and showed my GI Joe Mobile Command Center to them. They wouldn’t let me put it away for days. My son currently has my Legacy Millenium Falcon in his room. Has been using it for a couple of days now. They regularly ask for the Titans to be brought out. They’ll keep them in base modes and play for days. My daughter pretends FM and Scorponok are castles. My boy has cars going around Omega Supreme.
I think most adults would keep playsets as dioramas. I’m sure that’s what most of those Tantive IV corridors will end up as. But, a lot of those are going to have shootouts between joes and stormtroopers. I’d bet some collectors buy extras to display and play.

    I'd love playsets!

Hell, I bought the Motu Origins Castle Grayskull and I'm expecting a Snake Moutain. They make excellent display pieces and are a ton of fun.

I think most myself included will make the rare exception for the first five Titans class city bots. As these were expensive toys most wanted as a kid but couldn't afford. I didnt buy any for the hours of fun role play factor.

Hasbro going out of there way to create newer play sets for fan catered toy lines. Most will agree are not needed. As fans don't spend hours playing with toys re-enacting battles.

Decades ago when Classics first came out. Fans didn't want trailers included with toys. As they said they are useless husk of plastic that just split open. So what changed decades later?

Spending double for a included trailer. Or having the main bot toy made smaller. Was not something fans were willing to compromise decades ago when Classics first began. so why the change of heart decades later?

Hasbro stop making trailers and play sets, the few that want them, can buy the third party trailers.

I just straight up don't have the space for anything like that. Like a Teletraan 1 would be nice to 3D print and put behind my MP's but that's about it.

Why shouldn't they? Adults who enjoy toys can enjoy playsets too. Although I don't see why it has to be a kid/adult/highbrow collector only thing. There are plenty of playsets and dioramas that will suit a lot of needs for everybody. Just as there are with accessories. Furthermore, a playset can add a lot of pizzazz to a display. I certainly wouldn't pay extra money for them just because a playset caters to adult collectors, when kid ones do just fine.

If you don't like playsets, or think it's silly for adults to have them, then just don't buy them for yourself. In fact, why are you on a toy forum trying to look down your nose about adults having such things?

    @fschuler that's so nicely done!

Decades ago when Classics first came out, fans were annoyed that trailers weren't included with toys. So much so that a lot of the early 3rd party releases were various trailers for Ultra Magnus, Rodimus Prime and even several for Classic Optimus, specifically to fix the missing trailer issue.

I think in this case "most" mean just you mate. I see you are once again thinking that your opinion should be the golden standard.

As for the trailer thing, I see you really weren't around in the early days of third party.

You're ignoring the playset's value as a display area. And you'll note that most of the replies so far have been for playsets, so you're projecting your own preferences onto the rest of us.

Who said this? I recall several 3P trailers being made for Classics Prime and Magnus, and those trailers selling well. And while fans may not have been thrilled with the quality of the ER trailer, quite a few appreciated its inclusion. I think you're assuming your own preference is the consensus again.

I'd like to see a resurgence in playsets and dioramas. I tend to make my own by going to Hobby Lobby or Michael's and buying foam rocks and plastic trees for scenery.

Not too long ago, I bought a Hall of Armor playset from the Disney Store for my Iron Man Marvel Legends.

Some or most here, have said in threads. That they just put all that extra garbage back in the box. And just display the main bot toy.

Pretty sure that a couple of extra weapons don't count as a playset...
