    I've been busy.

    20220418_190020.jpg

Morstorm mk50 Suit is almost completed. I started working on it in earnest after finding the gold coated mask had been gouged and scratched on the runner before I took it out of the bag.
A light buffing and a few coats of paint (by hand) fixed it. Then I kept going.

    20220424_001853.jpg

My criticism of the Suit itself is the nanotech's elasticity from the uncanny valley compounded by the colors. It looks like a liquid metal onesie without any gold or silver below the knees. Now it's a borderline copyright infringement on Nike.

    20220425_235915.jpg

I'm keeping it mostly clean, with very few black accent lines and doing almost all of the engraved lines being painted silver on the red armor.

    20220501_144434.jpg

Not to mention, the added amount of gold paint to some areas blends together with the gold coated parts. Then there are areas like the shoulders that look much better than they did originally.

    20220501_224520.jpg

Right now, I'm grinding through the hands. The gold knuckles are smoothing out while I fill in the joint spaces between the fingers in silver.

I'm skipping the double handguns and Repulsor Amps, but I will build the arm cannon and sword arm.
Another thing is one of the CR311 LEDs for the hand Repulsors was cooked, so it's unusable and finding replacements for them is a task for another century.

Looking ahead at the next Suits, I have already preordered the Mk3 and Mk47 Deluxe editions.

Metallic injection plastic is nice and all, but it makes the suits look like toys.

I cut my plans short on the Mk50 suit to building only the suit for now and I will get back to the weapons another time.

    20220504_225253.jpg

I just need to get away from it for the time being. For now, I'm finishing the hands and head.

    20220504_223427.jpg

After grinding through all of them, painting the joints between each finger and the knuckles over the backhand covers, I narrowed down my choices for the hands to the bare essentials of the relaxed and dramatic open hands, and the closed fists.

The palm repulsors are silver coated for the LED gimmick I''m not using right now since one exploded and they're not easy to replace, but I filled the lenses with my clear light blue mix.

    20220504_235606.jpg

Time for the head. The LED this time around is a magnetic switch, so I don't need to pry the face off for anything other than changing the batteries.

    20220505_000513.jpg

Wave the Stark Industries missile (a wand magnet included with it) over the brow and the helmet lights up. Press on the chest panel and activate the Arc Reactor.

    20220505_001318.jpg

This concludes my work on the Mk50 suit for now, and I will eventually get to its the weapons. Overall, it's not my favorite Iron Man suit but the model is just fine. Painting it like I did does improve how I look at it.

At the time I'm writing this, I'm a little too tired to post it in different poses and its base stand is put away with the weapon parts for the Mk50 and Rescue armor.

    20220505_001439.jpg

One last shot of it for now with the Mk49 herself.

HADLEN WELTALL WILL RETURN... *when the next Iron Man kit comes out, or I dig the Mk85 out of storage.

Seeing the Mk50 in model form makes me appreciate the design a little more, but still not as an Iron Man suit. I'm trying to figure out which Tokusetsu revival something that bulky but organic would work for.

Perhaps something in ... BIO BOOSTER ARMOR?

Not really, but you get it. Or were you expecting something more Cybernetics Guardian?

Like I've said before this suit is my least favorite of the MCU Hall of Armors, but I didn't hate the model for it. I bought it on impulse during a very depressing time for me personally, and since it was practically all that existed of the Eastern Model/Morstorm kits.
Canonically, I feel like they rushed to get from the MCU's more "grounded" origin with the first Iron Man film to the same level of later MCU films.
The weighted pile of scrap that was Mark 1, the engineered and mechanically sound technology of Mark 2 through 49 gets thrown out the window when they went full on "NANOMACHINES!!" with the Mark 50, 85, and Iron Spider suits. I get it was to put Stark's homemade/caveborn genius on the same level of Magic, Space, Mystic, Wakandan technology because they put all of these elementally different characters together for the first time, and Tony needed to lose against Thanos on the first try.

It's one thing when StarLord's mask and other nanotech Gadgets of the Galaxy behaved in uncanny ways because "it comes from space" but it just doesn't work for Iron Man especially after seeing Tony literally build and test his suits for (then) nearly 10 years. Compared to the past films where RDJ is wearing parts of a practical suit with mo-cap markers where necessary, while the Mk50 is a full on digital suit that flexes and bends weightlessly.

Not only that but how Tony used it defying even the MCU's bendable laws of (f*** your) physics, creates more problems for itself when they can't explain the level of mass displacement and enlargement coming from such a compact device.

Until now I think the only realistic display of nanotech of this quality was in "No Way Home," when :
Otto rips a portion of the Iron Spider off and goes to stab Peter 1 in the chest, and the suit instinctively realigned his mask to fill the void left by the missing armor.
    .
Seeing how that worked, Tony should have lost more than half the suit when he was throwing hammer fists at Thanos, or left his back completely exposed when using the Amps on Ebony Maw and Black Dwarf.

The Guyver was actually exactly where my brain went but I couldn't remember if it was Japanese or just 70s crack.

I mainly dislike the 50 because the color blocking is really bad. It's like a marble cake of Iron Man. After the Mk 7 only the 85 really got it right again. But all the nanotech stuff is also lame.

See my earlier comment about it looking like a liquid metal onesie. Without any color division below the thigh, it just loses its details. Overall, the lack of color and elasticity from the uncanny valley with the organic muscle design really hurts my eyes with the suit too.

Opened up Threezero's Hulkbuster over the weekend, so far it lives up the the hype. Just got to wait for the batteries to arrive to make sure those work. All of the engineering to work around the articulation limitations is really impressive. You could basically make HB do the splits if you wanted. How, they worked in a deep ab-crunch while also having the opening chest gimmick is just fantastic. Oddly enough the hands are fixed pose and not poseable. Overall, another winner from Threezero. All friction joints, but they are solid as a rock....the waist was a little too solid and cut my thumb rotating it. :(

    Mail's here.

    My Mk47 has arrived.

    20220716_125536.jpg

From the looks of things they only released Deluxe version of this and subsequent releases coming. I guess they want to show off their candy coats.

    20220716_125738.jpg

The silver and gold layers are matte colors to contrast.

Looks like the next Morstorm x Eastern Model Iron Man models will be the Mk42 and Mk43.
    Preorders are open at Gundamit/ShowZ:

[Pre-Order] Eastern Model 1/9 Iron Man Mark 42 Pre-painted Model Kit
[Pre-Order] Eastern Model 1/9 Iron Man Mark 43 Pre-painted Model Kit

It seems pretty obvious Morstorm is done making 'regular' versions with matte metallic red plastic, as both suits have prepainted parts. This doesn't surprise me since the suits that appeared before "Civil War" don't have the excessive loadouts that would make the 'economic' versions necessary.

The Mk43 is clearly the same model as the Mk42 only with more color separation, akin to how they made the Mk46 and 47 suits. How they do this remains to be seen, though I wouldn't be surprised if there will be foil decals some areas on the Mk43.

Aside note, I should mention the Mk47 model's instruction manual has an additional "correction" page included because they accidentally reprinted the assembly steps from the Mk46 version.

I'll wait until these come out before I decide *if* I want either of them. I wasn't much of a fan of the Mk42 design even in hotrod red.

I'm kind of disappointed Morstom hasn't followed up on the War Machine that was prototyped at the same time these were, and skipped the Mk7 from the first "Avengers" film for the continuity of "Iron Man 3" to "Age of Ultron."

Looks like my Hall of Armors project is shifting a few other things around the backlog. I was planning to build the Mk85 when the Mk47 came in the mail, but the Mk3 armor is on its way and will be delivered tomorrow. So I may start with that one first.. In the meantime, in response to my last post...

What I lamented has been answered and then some!

Best of all... The one I've waited on for ten years! (technically three since that's how long I've known Morstorm was making models but you get where I'm going)

Mail's here from my favorite store on the Citadel. I plan on starting this once I finish with the Infinitism Mazinkaiser I'm building currently.

    20220727_154050.jpg

It's the (only edition released) "Deluxe" version which includes a maintenance rack and portions of a stripped down, upper half of the suit.

The colors look really good. It seems there are some red parts that aren't coated like the hip joints and polycaps, but I can fix that myself easily.

    20220727_154504.jpg

The coating is a rich candy red over silver painted parts, and the metallic gold coating is a bright and matte finish. The mix I made for the Mk49 and Mk85 will be perfect for it, which is a 2:1 ratio of Brass and a mix of mine I call "Plastic Syndrome Gold."

This gives me a good excuse to watch the first "Iron Man" movie again.
