Modified my flame walker and gave it a new flame chest plate design which is more accurate to the g1 Hot Rod feel. Also, light blue eyes to replace the original dark mundane eye color.

 

Edit: TLDR - My impressions of the Hot Rod figure are good and I would recommend picking him up  

So I got this new Mechanic Studio Hot Rod for Christmas and I've been very happy with it overall. He's a good solidly built figure with nice tight joints and great finishes. I feel like the paint apps are well done, not too much, not too sparse. I know it may not be everyone's preferred height but he is spot on perfect for me! He is right at Carbot size for my collection (see pics with Sideswipe and Prowl) and he scales really well with my other Movie and S3 bots. I feel like the designers fixed all the quibbles anyone may have had with their Rodimus with this figure. He stands and poses great, no wobbly, off balance, lack-of-heel here. The proportions of the backpack are much reduced and I feel like his proportions overall are excellent. Is it just me, or does anyone else think his vehicle mode is a little small? Well, maybe not smaller than it SHOULD be, I guess I just found it to be smaller that I expected. He kind of reminded me of their Tracks in that respect, with a good sized bot transforming into a compact sized vehicle. I'll applaud the transformation as well, as it was very well done. I consulted the instructions for the first bot-to-car sequence but was able to transform him back with out looking so it was pretty intuitive. I know it sounds odd to say, but I really think he is a much better figure in hand than how he appears in photographs. I was a little underwhelmed by early pics but I am very satisfied with the product in person. Maybe some of you other guys that also own this one know what I'm talking about. I just wanted to put that statement out there for any of you guys that may be on the fence about picking this one up. I would heartily recommend him. I took several shots of Hot Rod with my other figs to kind of show comparisons but I apologize in advance for the lighting, it's pretty bad! I also included comparison shots with the Hasbro Movie Hot Rod and my original Hot Rod from back in the day, they both dwarf him!

I received mine several days ago and boy am I disappointed. He's a runt and doesn't scale well at all with Prime/Magnus/Springer/Kup. The size and height says "Legend class", not Plus. He scales with their Wreck Gar (good sculpt but again too small).

MFT and Mechanic Studio are the same thing essentially, right? What gives with the downsize from their own previous releases? I sold my Papatoys Rod for this and I regret it now. I'm very tempted to sell Hot Rod and Wreck Gar because it irritates the heck out of me to see the size difference when placed to the older releases.

 

So is this just a pinker version?

Yes, more magenta-like you might say. For some reason I always picture Hot Rod as red, but after looking at screenshots of the movie, there is no denying that he was magenta on screen.

Looks like this guy scales well with other MFT ‘86 Movie bots. I got those (despite being more a Legends than Legends+ guy), so I guess I’ll get him too… since for the time being MS and NA don’t seem to be doing any movie bots other than Magnus.

 

Not really a legends collector, but that looks great. The black repaint imo is the better of the two.
