Those shorts are just cringe. It feels less like Peacemaker the character saying these and just John Cena goofing off. He has done similar tirades in... I think was it Surf's Up 2? Yeah, doubt they can afford that. This does feel like Gunn's superhero comedy from the early 2000s, where there are a bunch of argumentative annoying heroes who spend most of their time sitting at home and talking and fighting with each other (I think it was called The Specials)... he just now gets to use actually established DC characters. I saw the trailer for episode 4, read the synopsis, and decided to instead go back to watching Ghosts (BBC one of course) and Bones. I just... same as you, I feel this whole thing is forced. It's hard to imagine real people acting this way. I checked out some Peacemaker comics, and completely mental Chris Smith who constantly argues with his nazi father's ghost and has a remote controlled death-copter is somehow more believable than Cena. At least he has a complete team behind him, including a psychiatrist, and he never gets easily captured or does something as stupid as leave out his assassination orders with a hooker. That was his very first incarnation. The 1980ies version was the one this version is mostly based of, who thinks the ghosts of those he killed are in his helmet, and who is more then a little unhinged. Vigilante seems to be similar, but I have yet to see evidence this Adrian Chase was also a lawyer and got his family killed which made him hunt down criminals who are released due to legal loopholes. Given that he is this young and works in a restaurant, I find that hard to be the case. Dude I already posted last page. It's his dad, he was retconned from a nazi officer to a racist vigilante. DC's Peacemaker (DCEU HBO Max Series) Knowing Gunn's penchant to go overboard, I bet the suit can turn him into a flaming monster, and he will ride a real White Dragon, like in the comics. They aren't from the comics that's for sure. I mentioned the Young Justice Kroloteans, but they have fake human robot suits they pilot (like that MIB alien), and are humanoid. Must be Gunn's creation.
Finished episode 4. Vigilante is still the best character in the show. I want to see a spin off that’s centered around him.
Caught up on this recently and liked it a lot more than I expected to. Definitely my favourite thing to come out of the current DC film-verse. It's not quite as relentlessly over-the-top as Suicide Squad; the characters have room to breathe and have actual conversations, and I actually like most of them? It certainly makes the recent batch of Marvel shows look fairly safe and bland in comparison. It's well-made & well-shot, with great music and some genuinely hilarious moments. (Vigilante picking a fight with the white supremacists in this week's episode was gold.) Looking forward to the rest of the season. And those opening credits alone are worth the price of admission, my gosh.
'Peacemaker' is the biggest streaming TV series in the world right now, as HBO Max originals gain momentum
Loved Peacemaker's list of people Dye Beard could have used for the fingerprint switch instead of his dad. Love he included at the end "...Optimus Prime, Shipwreck, Cobra Commander, the c***s from Riverdale!"
By that I assume he meant the new angsty drama TV series. One can hope. Cobra Commander and Optimus Prime exist in the DC world? As toys/cartoon characters? That just feels weird, and not sure how Hasbro feels about that...
You know I find it funny he went for Optimus and not Hot Rod. Maybe the name recognition. But on the other hand, Hot Rod being a nobody in public's eye makes it funnier.
"James Gunn!" Haha, nice. I'm enjoying the Peacemaker show. It was a bit too much on the Gunn-isms in the first and second episode, which I can only take in moderation, but I understand that it may have been necessary in that Peacemaker is a ridiculous character with respect to the visual representation as well as how the character was portrayed in the Suicide Squad movie. It was important to emphasize how bonkers Peacemaker is as an individual in a seemingly relatively normal world that is punctuated by fantastic events every once in a while and where beings like Superman exist. I suppose, at least for me, the juxtaposition of a largely "real" world and characters like Peacemaker and things like the "butterflies", works. It's not all real world grit and it's not all over the top comic book fantasy. John Cena isn't the best actor in the world but what he does, he does well enough at the very least. He can handle the outlandishness of Peacemaker as well as the pathos experienced when the mask is both literally and figuratively cast aside and we see him dealing with his past as Chris Smith. The show has definitely improved for me as it progresses. I wasn't expecting much when it began but the show has definitely grown on me. Spoiler I especially liked the pivotal bonding moment between Peacemaker and Economos when they discovered their shared fandom of Hanoi Rocks.
