@Turbine027 Hey man, the other day I've watched one of the latest Collection critique episodes by Bobby Skullface. There have been some board members' pictures on his channel by now and I was looking forward to seeing his reaction on your collection since I generally appreciate his thoughts, even though I don't necessarily always agree with his views. But I can say that I've never disagreed with him more on something before. I found his comments to almost sound rude and disrespectful towards what you've created as a whole. From his advice to slim everything down to him hating your glass elements, or his lack of understanding about the center display... It's like he didn't get what your collection is about at all. To me the museal and nostalgic character of your displays, the feeling of completeness and cleanness they ewoke, are unique. And even if aesthetic perceptions may vary, as collectors we should appreciate variety. Please continue posting excerpts of your collection in the various threads. It's always delightful seeing your concept. Cheers.

Absolutely LOVE this display, the old/modern figures thing is brilliantly presented! I'm quite envious of the space you have too.

Relating to the above post, nobody should care what one loud person thinks of their displays. On the few I've watched I can't tell whether he's being serious or trying to be funny in a mean way (unsuccessfully); either way it's pretty unpalatable.

I really appreciate you guys stopping by and sharing your thoughts!! It’s funny just how many years it took for the submission to get reviewed because so much has been tweaked since then :lol

I actually plan to take more shots of the room to re-update the thread and add the link to the BobbySkullfsce video on the first page for reference.

Thanks for defending the collection but I went into it knowing they would take some stabs at it and honestly some of their critiques are valid.

For instance, I noticed the “shadow issue” and I -still- haven’t added in lighting to the shelves (something that I’ve wanted to do since setting it up in this house) so I’m hoping that will actually help with that.

We plan to replace the floors in the house at some point in the far future, so I’ve kinda been waiting for that because I’ll have to take it all down anyway :lol

But the plan would be to add the wood floors, paint the walls (maybe a light/medium grey) and install hardwired lights to each of the white shelves so it will shine down into the glass and hopefully help with the shadows.

I 100% plan to keep the G1/MP as the focus, but if I’m being honest I’ve often thought about downsizing/selling/something the back wall of all the Beastwars-Modern figures so that I could add some decent seating to the room… but honestly the price I would get for those figures isn’t really worth the effort and a part of me likes being able to sample the history of the toy line like that.

Ultimately, I’m still really happy with my room but I’d be lying if I didn’t consider trimming the collection down to just US G1, to free up a TON of shelves and then be able to space out the G1/MP collection to like 2-5 characters per shelf to give them more breathing room… but again, the thought of selling all that or regretting doing so keeps me from pulling the trigger :)

I think I’m rambling hahaha but again thanks for all the kind words!!

    It’s starting :lol

    IMG_7063.jpeg

If anyone follows me or catches this post, I’m about to take literally everything off my shelves so I can paint the walls and install lights… If you have any feedback on things you think MUST STAY that you admire about my collection or that you would personally change if this was your room, I’m open to hearing it!!

    While rethinking my room…

    Priorities:
    - - Keep it uncluttered
    - - Keep all G1 on display
    - - Side by side G1 and MP for at least S1/2
    - - Add a loveseat sized place to sit
    - - Delete or at least shrink the middle of the room display to provide more walking space
    - - Find a great spot for Haslab Unicron and perhaps a smaller display centered around him than what I have right now.

What I’m open to / have to change:
    - - Number of shelves … I will lose total shelf space, but since I’m hardwiring lighting I can actually squeeze a few more in some places to not lose as much display area
    - - Cutting back on the modern lines to make room for the loveseat and/or spacing of figures
    - - Removing the 1984 duplicate MPs from the center completely from the room.
    - - Other option is displaying 1984 MPs in both Bot and Alt modes (since I have both already) and then their G1 in robot mode … this would help eliminate the center display but would also require spacing out the figures more
    - - More figures in alt mode to create less visual clutter…

Here’s a very quick sample of what I might try with displaying the G1/MP this time (not married to the exact layout just generally trying it out)

    IMG_7061.jpeg
and here’s a section I did just putting G1 into alt mode to see how I feel about that option too:

I am the first one they cover in this video.

The photos are from over two years ago, after I moved into a new house and got everything unboxed and displayed again. Once you have finished watching I can share more recent photos if you like.

    And my little IDW shelf:

And yes, that is Waspinator, for in the IDW comics he fights alongside Windblade and I wished to honour that.

Ok, had the time the rewatch your episode this morning … “Don’t display in a hospital” :lol

I agreed with them about the vertical space and balancing the taller figures, both of which you’ve clearly worked on!

Things I love: Clearly I’m also a fan, but I dig the white shelves … I can’t tell in the photos if your walls are a light grey or a white, but I think the neutral walls let the colors of the figures speak!

I like how you’ve balance the figures a lot more!

If you want some constructive feedback (that you don’t have to listen to :lol ) then keep reading

I don’t know if you could adjust this based on screwing the brackets into the wall, but for the floating shelves I think it could look more dynamic to not have all 3 at the same height. I’m guilty of this in my room because almost every main shelf is the same height throughout, but on a smaller scale display area I think it could look cool to either bring down/up the middle shelf or (if there was enough space, to put 2 in the middle to give some more visual variety while still being balanced … or give some space above for a small sign, logos, or something

    E16C9DC9-FDC6-49F9-A89E-796EE1FC4802.jpeg

Another thing I noticed is that the very middle area of the shelf looks a little more crowded compared to the left and right sides…. If this was my room, something I would try is the Dinobots in Dinosaur mode facing forward/fanned out slightly kinda like your Predacons (would give some connection between those 2 displays too) … and then you could use some small clear risers to place the other figures up and around them… in the end, it might not look “better” but I’m a huge advocate of “try and veto if ugly” in my room :lol

Overall, I love the vision of your display and the organization of the bots/cons and movie displays! And Waspinator can totally stay!! I love little details like that that feel personal.

And lastly, depending on your future goals with the IDW shelf, I would consider a floating shelf or taller risers to bring up the predacons… that wingspan is impressive and I think elevating them would make them pop more and then give you more space on the shelf to spread things out even more.

Also, I don’t want you to think I don’t like the displays as they are, just providing the critiques I said I would :D  … and if you have any for me as I’m working on my new room refresh, I’m always glad to hear opinions from other collectors!

Here’s a link to some “cheap” clear risers I’ve used before if you wanted to play with heights along your main shelf.

EDIT: I just saw that you already use some risers, I didn’t notice at first

Thank you for all the constructive feedback and kind words about my collection, let me address them one by one.

Eventually Defensor will stand next to Superion, and Menasor with Devastator (once Xtransbots and Fanstoys finally get their shit in order and release the remaining teammembers), so that middle space that now has a 'void' will be taken up by two combiners. Lowering the shelf will means that Defensor and Menasor will be butting heads with it.

A small available space will remain in the middle even with all the combiners present, where I will put a logo, or maybe find some kind of depiction of Cybertron (a painting, photo from the cartoon or something 3D printed, I don't know yet). So eventually there shall be no negative space.

Eventually when Defensor is complete, I shall be forced to make room, by that time I shall look into the Dinobots and reposition/transform them as necessary. Maybe take a few figures with a flying alt-mode, transform them and mount them on the wall with a flightstand.

When all my Predacons are customised, I shall combine them into Predaking, at which point the entire dynamic of the shelf will change. He will be standing in the background, with Overlord, Tarn and Deathsaurus before him, so no riser necessary. :)

And the walls are indeed entirely white, as are the shelves, though they have silver brackets. A little bit of grey on the floor and doors breaks up the monotomy. My girlfriend prefers simplistic and bright rooms (which does look a bit hospital-y, yes), so that is why there is not much going on in our house. :D

As I was writing the feedback I was like “when he’s got the other combiners finished that’s gonna effect that middle area anyway” but instead of erasing the comments I just left them :D

Flight stands I think will add a fun dynamic to the display when you get to that point!

And I actually like the simplicity! When I look at displays here and on Facebook, the ones that feel “clean” always look better to me and a huge priority with any changes I make with my room.

I like the idea about Cybertron … in my room I want to put something above the new loveseat I’ll be putting in… I would like to -not- do floating shelves unless it’s a one off Optimus Prime and Megatron on either side and higher up… and I’ve been looking at printing posters/art on canvas… I’m thinking either 2 or 3 larger prints. If I can schedule it, I would like to have a Prime and Megatron canvas signed by Peter and Frank (something I’d have to get done sooner than later as they age) … but I also considered high quality prints of Cybertron, The Ark, etc …. But I’ll play in photoshop with different options until I’m excited :D

And again, if you have any thoughts on things you think should stay about my display or things to consider before I really get going, I’m all ears

Just documenting some of my thought processes during this redo…

I’ll probably change my mind 27 times, but I like having a plan that should 90% work before starting. My personal OCD requires some symmetry with the collection and “what goes where” is more important than “what fits where” :lol

    IMG_7140.jpeg

I’ve been making a few practice shelves to see what it might look like to give key characters more real estate … these shelves are in random spots in my room as I take stuff down so I haven’t finessed them completely; more of a “could something like this work” because I’ve had a few ideas that got immediately vetoed during trial runs :lol

Well, I’ve never seen this space fully empty with shelves in it before :D

Even when we first moved in the room was full of unpacked bins and I filled shelves as I built sections…

Still documenting the room refresh, both for myself and anyone that runs across it :D

I need to buy 2 more skinny bookcases and remove 2 wide cases, but I brought in a loveseat:

    IMG_7170.jpeg

I’ve been playing in photoshop to see what paint can look like … the colors are downloading a little more green on my phone, but I’m thinking a greyish blue color… I was playing with just an accent wall or everything, and at this point I’m thinking everything … yay me :lol
