Can another company - such as has been rumored with skybound - start working on their own comics and have them ready to roll out once the IDW license expires? Or must they wait till after the license is up to start work? Just curious how this all works and if there\'ll be a gap between the end and the new beginning .

Had this happened 10 years ago, I would have been devastated. Now though?

Please Boom, get the license! It’s the most logical choice since Hasbro owns BOTH Transformers AND Power Rangers!

Well, it is what it is. I got into IDW's Transformers way after it had been there for a while, and personally I've liked most of what I read from them.
Don't see much of a need to celebrate this news, though. I can't imagine having that much disdain for something so innocuous - well actually I can, but 15 year-old me was an idiot.

Can't really say whether this is good or bad till we find out who gets the license next. I definitely enjoyed most of idw1 but since the reboot it's definitely not been very engaging. Definitely looking forward to see what we get next even if it's not great it'll probably be no worse than what idea been giving us recently

I would assume any new stuff couldn't start because of rights issues. But I'm guessing they are accepting pitches so there's probably teams at studios doing that kind of work.

Even then we wouldn't know until work started. When they gave Bee Movie to a new director there was some uncertainty but Knight landed it.

That's why I'm not really happy or sad about the studio as much as I'm nervous about what this means in general.

I will say I am not happy about this but more so looking forward to what is next, I loved IDW1 when I finally read it in late 2019 even if toward the end it got worse. It's still my favorite TF continuity, and just IDW2 never hooked me at all. So I look forward to the next universe/company and see if they can hook me.
So goodbye IDW thanks for the memories, and hello to the future. And what it might bring.

Yup, I mean have you seen Star Wars fans and how some of them react.

Is IDW still going to be able to publish the rest of their hardcover collections after 2022? It\'s going to really bother me if they never complete the full set... :/

I’m one of the handful of Objectively Fake fans who like the current IDW continuity, so I’m bummed about that. I take some consolation that at the very least they’ll be able to conclude the story if “Wars End” means anything.

Heretical as it may be, IDW was my “G1” insofar as it was my first exposure to G1 all the way back in ‘08. As much as a mess as that continuity was, I still hold it up there with Animated as my favorite Transformers media.

I hope whoever gets the license has good talent, and that it pisses off everyone whose taking this news as vindication for some personal vendetta.

Sometimes I'd wonder what would happen if somebody used an all-new cast to tell a TransFormers story without being so beholden to G1's more iconic points.

Then, from the depths of Hell, Tom Scioli appeared and proceeded to vomit all over GoBots.

    Hope is a lie.

This is the kind of *good* fanwank I could go for.

Though BOOM has done a lot to expand the franchise they sometimes get a little too excited and we wind up with stuff like the White Tiger Dragonzord combo....

    Wasn't that essentially BW?

Further thoughts about this since the last time I commented about it barely anything changed (If anything, they only got worse): This is far from a big loss.

The main Transformers title is an extremely slow story that doesn't deserve the amount of issues it got (The premise itself makes things even more ridiculous, this is just a set-up for the frikking war for God's sake), Wreckers started with a lot of potential but wasted rather quickly and ended in a pretty pointless way, and finally Beast Wars is probably the best of the bunch but that's not saying much since that book has a lot of flaws too (Particularly the heavyhanded dialogue and redundant stories).

The franchise needs new blood urgently, hopefully people who actually knows how to tell a proper story.

Only if they wrap it up by EOY, which isn't likely. If another publisher gets the license, they could choose to continue publishing hardcover collections in the same format, but it's far from guaranteed.

Imagine saying Gatekeeping isn't a bad thing, in Transformers.

And as a self-proclaimed Beast Wars fan no less.

Boom Power Rangers got sloppy and kinda crap. The hype from their comics is a remnant of pre-Shattered Grid times.

Yeah, that miniseries was...rough, to say the least.

'Professional writers must be long-time fans of every franchise they write for' is exactly the type of garbage hot take I'd expect from this fandom.

    Just as PSA Transfandom...

When Skybound gets the license are proceeds to hire Guido or somebody from IDW1, and they experiment with a new style, we're going to learn from our past mistakes and refrain from doing what we did to Don Figueroa, which was to bully him out of the comics industry because we couldn't go with the flow. We're going to be good this time.

    Right?

    Good talk.

What will this mean for the compiled trades? Will those no longer be produced? Forever incomplete?
