Here's my list for the 1980s. Other decades to come later, maybe:
    10. Trypticon. Big electronic dinosaur that turns into a base. Always fun.
    9. Grimlock. Smaller dinosaur but so much fun, and a great, major character.
    8. Omega Supreme. Another big electronic walking guy. But this one turns into a space station with a motorized tank. And a rocket.
    7. God Ginrai. The ultimate big red truck. A total brick in robot mode but so cool anyway.
    6. Sixshot. The ultimate Transformer. Six modes and all of them pretty good.
    5. Megatron. The ultimate role-play toy of the line. You could pretend you held the power of the Decepticon leader in your hand. Regrettable robot mode keeps him from ranking higher.
    4. Grand Maximus. Like Fortress Maximus on steroids. Virtually every play feature you needed in the 80s, and he was so big he was still the biggest Transformer until 2013.
    3. Jetfire. Nice big jet to swoosh around, posability decades ahead of anything else. Can't rank him higher only because he's not a Hasbro/Takara product.
    2. Soundwave. The ultimate gimmick, right in the first year of the line. More fun than you ought to be able to have with a toy that turns into a box.
    1. Optimus Prime. Fitting that the Autobot leader is also the best toy. Great posability, base mode in the trailer, completely indispensable. If you didn't have him, you were missing out and you knew it.

2 of the decades will take some time for me to consider

In the 90s I wasn't involved in transformers at all

In the 2010s for one thing I fell off from the hobby mid decade ,And sooooo many came out and some of them are huge and expensive

The 2000s were my big collecting time (I think we are all here because of the 2000s tbh ,with a obvious nod to the 80s as well)

    1980s
    1. Optimus Prime - The King
    2. Fortress Maximus - The most amibitous TF of the era
    3. Predaking - The best Combiner of the time.
    4. Grimlock - Some of the best engineering until the 2000s.
    5. Micromaster Countdown base - An exceptionally high value play item. "The base" of late G1.
    6. Jetfire - Probably the most premium product in the first two years of G1
    7. Scorponok - Arguably more playability than Fortress Maximus.
    8. Prowl - The zenith of the diaclone car engineering.
    9. Starscream - An icon of design 35 years later.
    10. Devastator - Many of the figures had a lot of playability. Most fun combiner to assemble.

    1990s
    1. Laser Rod Optimus Prime - Considered the greatest Transformer of all time for like 15 years.
    2. Generation 2 Dreadwing and Smokescreen - They fell through a timewarp from the 2010s to 1995. Stunningly ahead of their time.
    3. Star Convoy - Exceptional play value. Great capstone to G1. The one we dreamed about for years because we never could get it.
    4. Beast Wars II Galvatron - Exceptional style and shelf presence, 23 years later. Great engineering.
    5. Beast Wars Tigerhawk - Best engineering in all of US Beast Wars.
    6. Beast Wars Neo Big Convoy - Insanely ambitious. The avatar of Japanese Beast Wars. A real challenge to Transform.
    7. Transmetals II Optimal Optimus - Exceptially premium item for the time.
    8. Transmetals Megatron - The best BW Megatron figure to this day probably. Head and shoulders above the other Transmetals save one.
    9. Transmentals Tarantulas - The other best Transmetal. Nearly modern in design
    10. Action Master Optimus Prime - Optimus Prime that looked (sorta) like the cartoon? Big draw at the very end of US G1.

    2000s
    1. RID 2001 Optimus Prime (Fire Convoy) - One of the best designed, engineered and produced transformers ever made. Insane style. It's still crazy we got this guy at mass retail.
    2. ROTF Leader class Optimus Prime - The icon of the 2000s. Set the bar for engineering for a decade. Modern MPM basically take after him.
    3. MP-01 Optimus Prime - The one who started it all. Declared the greatest Transformer of all time for a while.
    4. Armada Unicron - By far the best Armada figure and still holds up to this day at what it tries to accomplish. It still has tremendous presence.
    5. Classics Optimus Prime - Perhaps the 2nd most produced Optimus of all time. A landmark in design. Still very hard to beat.
    6. MP-8 Grimlock - Took the G1 engineering and gave it a direct upgrade. A dream project.
    7. Alternator Smokescreen - Basically made Universe 2.0 and Generations possible. Very ambitious for the time.
    8. Universe Prowl - The avatar of "re-engineered G1 characters" in Universe, building on what Classics did.
    9. Universe Cyclonus - The best Universe 2.0 figure.
    10. Galaxy Force Starscream (the voyager scale one) - The best looking Starscream ever made. Still looks amazing on a shelf.
(note: I would also put RID2001 Scourge and Brave Maximus on this list, but they're both repaints)

    2010s
    1. MP-36 Megatron - It's insane this guy happened. Incredible engineering (though flawed production). We finally get that "perfect" G1 Megatron!
    2. Spec Ops Jazz - Probably the best engineered Generations figure of the entire 2010s. Was king for 10 years until SS86 Jazz dethroned him in 2020 look wise. Still tops engineering wise. Absolute landmark.
    3. Rodimus Minor (Animated) - The very best animated figure captured what made Animated engineering and design so ambitious and effective.
    4. Prime (First Edition) Optimus Prime - Ditto for Prime. It was a brand new direction and this figure's engineering still stands as some of the best of the 2010s.
    5. MP-24 Star Saber - He does to G1 Star Saber's toy what MP-8 did to Grimlock, and gave us all the Chug scale Star Saber we deserved.
    6. MP-10 Optimus Prime / Convoy - The king for MP's for years. Set the bar. Still holds up great. A great sequel to MP-01.
    7. Siege Shockwave - Birthed the phrase "mini-masterpiece" for a good reason. Incredible look.
    8. TR Trypticon - The 2010s were the time of the Titans, and he was by far the best one. They took his G1 design to the next level and made a landmark figure.
    9. Siege Jetfire - Not so-mini Masterpiece. Hasbro gave us the "Skyfire" we always wanted with incredible engineering and play value. A landmark figure in CHUG.
    10. Terradive (2010) - An original design with one of the best transformation schemes and impressive looks of all of CHUG.
(note: I would also put Tokyo Toy Show 2015 Black Convoy and TFCC Armada Skywarp on the list, but they're both repaints)

    Oh this is fun!

Here's my 1980s list, more to come:

10). Countdown -- Or, more accurately, the truly sweet rocket base playset he came with. Not a much-discussed toy, but for my money this is the best Micromasters ever got, I got endless hours of fun out of it as a kid.

9). Megatron -- Yes, the robot mode has, um, some issues. But the transformation is really quite cool, the gun mode is arguably too good, and he evokes some killer nostalgia for some supplemental products, like those read-along picture books.

8). Double Dealer -- It's a testament to how cool this toy is that amidst a bunch of 80s characters that never got major western media attention, Double Dealer stands out. That eagle head is so well-sculpted, the giant missile is cool and imposing, and he's got that intriguing faction-switching thing going on.

7). Shockwave -- This is the only toy on the list I've never actually owned. But I have the WST version, so I have a rough idea of how it handles and... well for the love of primus look at the thing. Just an iconic robot mode design that still looks incredible to this day.

6). Sideswipe -- Those diaclone cars sure were incredible huh? And for my money this was the most incredible of the bunch. (Man, I probably should have put all of them on here huh?)

5). Optimus Prime -- Undoubtedly this toy's stature is raised by the character attached to it. And I do kinda hate how easy it is to lose the hands. But you can't argue with iconic, and the quality here is off the charts.

4). Powermaster Optimus Prime -- Wait, I'm rating this over the original? Look, I cannot be objective about this toy. If you want to read some high-quality at-length gushing, see this review on my short-lived blog.

3). Hot Rod -- In addition to being uncommonly screen-accurate for his era, Hot Rod boasts a really cool transformation and a simply kick-ass alt-mode. The best design of the 86 class.

2). Fortress Maximus -- Because size matters, no matter what anyone tells you.

1). Soundwave -- I am in awe of this design. It's just so elegant. It makes converting a real-world object into a transcendent robot design look effortless. It's absolutely beautiful in both modes. And that's before we get to the cool gimmick. Simply an astonishing toy.

I should really be working. Instead...

    1990s!

Honorable(?) Mention: BW Rampage: I was thinking through Beast Wars and thought, "Oh man, Rampage, that rubber track thingy he does is SO COOL, maybe he deserves a spot on the list just for that! Then I took him off the shelf and played with him for a bit and... sorry, Rampage, but I just can't do it.

10). G2 Electro -- Listen, I dunno what you all are complaining about, the copy I had as a kid held up fine. And lemme tell you, if he doesn't break on you, this is a heck of a toy. First time I remember really getting excited about light piping.

9). Transmetal Tarantulus -- So screen accurate! You can say that about many Transmetal designs, but this one for whatever reason feels like a bit ahead of the pack.

8). Depthcharge -- But see, Depth Charge is also shiny and extremely cartoon accurate, but he's also bigger and he has a sweet disc-throwing gimmick. So checkmate, Tarantulus.

7). Beast Wars Optimus Primal (The monkey one, not the bat one) -- My view of this toy is skewed because my copy is the cartoon-accurate 10th anniversary TRU exclusive, but even if I squint and imagine it in its original form... this is just a tremendous toy. The shoulder rockets, the swords... Truk can be monkey if he's gonna do it in style like this.

6). Quickstrike -- There's not a lot going on with this toy but he looks great (and screen accurate), and that hyper-articulated cobra-tail is just so much fun! Incidentally, this steals Transmetal Rattrap's spot, because I wrote pretty much the exact same thing for him, but tail-arm is better than tail-sword.

5). G2 Tank Megatron -- As adults, we care about dweeb crap like "articulation" and "scale" and "whether or not it looks stupid." But you know what kid-me cared about? Awesome tank barrels that could load multiple spring-loaded missiles, and voice lines that auto-trigger when the spring-loaded head pops up, like a grand finale to the transformation. Megatron Attacks!

4). Beast Wars Silverbolt -- What a great design. You forget this wolf-eagle creature doesn't exist, because it looks so much like it SHOULD exist.

3). Laser Optimus -- I don't own this toy, but I do own RID Scourge, so I know how good the mold is. Which is to say: Freaking incredible. Would likely be even higher if not for the drab grey plastic, which really stands out when you compare him to Scourge.

2). G2 Dreadwing and Smokescreen -- The last time I remember getting a Transformer for Christmas as a kid and being incredibly excited about it. Just a killer design, encapsulating everything that was good about G2.

1). Transmetal 2 Beast Wars Megatron -- The beauty of this toy is simply undeniable. You're getting it for the dragon mode... but goddamn that dragon mode.

I'll do this one at a time. Since I was there from day 1, I'll start with the 80s.

    10. Hound - I think I got him because he was unique, and he had some cool gear.
    9. Prowl - At least the arms were articulated!
    8. Skywarp - Still the best seeker color scheme
    7. Sunstreaker - Purchase #2, and my first Autobot
    6. Computron
    5. Abominus
    4. Superion - you can't beat the combiners, and these were my favorites
    3. Jetfire. A Transformer with knees in the 80s? No way!
    2. Slag. Ain't nothin' beats that G1 Dinobot color scheme, and Slag was my first. Honestly the whole team should be on this list, or at least the 4 I had (Sludge being odd bot out)
    1. Soundwave and his cassettes. Ravage and Rumble purchase #1, SW #3
