Not trying at all to say not to get this... but if the transformation is what worries you then you might be in for some disappointment. FansToy's isn't known for simple transformations.

But Grump certainly was a figure of its time and I don't begrudge anyone wanting to update.

So this is the second FanstToys Minibot, after Sheridan, that I don’t think actually looks better than the Badcube version. It certainly looks more poseable, which is weird considering gears is a non-action character for the most part, but the slight improvements to his thighs and his shoes don’t really cancel out badcubes superior alt mode. And just looking at these pics and comparing them with bad cubes grump in my display, it doesn’t strike me as looking significantly better. Kind of the opposite of the huffer situation where I thought I was really happy with Badcube until I saw the FansToys version.

Maybe because it's such a basic form of articulation it's expected?

It just occurred to me, if they make this bigger than Badcube’s grump I might buy it. I feel kind of like the original MP bumblebee was a tad too small, and he supposed to be the smallest Autobot at least on a season one shelf. Right now, looking at my collection, the only auto bots in that size range are bad cube grump, X TVs Cliffjumper and Windcharger, and bumblebee. I already know I’m replacing Cliffjumper with FanstToys, presumably they will make bumblebee as well, so If I pick this and Windcharger up that will pretty much fix my season one scale issue…. Hmm. But with FT prices I’d be looking at roughly $500 to upgrade 4 minibots I already have perfectly decent representations of, which seems questionably worth it.

Its hard to not wanna buy Fans Toys stuff when it looks so good.

I wish Fans Toys was more into repaings like KFC and X-Transbots but oh well.

Is it just me, or does his face look peculiar for some reason…? It was the same with their Huffer too iirc. Like they’re using a smoother, more human-esque face over an angular robotic one like those two seemed to have…

Not really certain which is better looking either. I don’t have the Badcube version, but I kind of liked his somewhat dumpy look. FT easily will have sculpt and paint down pat, but their articulation has been spotty lately and their prices nuts for some items.

Throw in a toy head and I’ll think about it.

also, I always thought of all the robot faces they gave human faces gears looked the most ridiculous of the bunch.

Yup. He was unveiled a week or so ago with Outback:

This guy looks to be better than what's come before:

Not sure any of the FT minibots has been able to pull off a decent kneel yet.

I think I prefer the Swerve sculpt. I think all of the mold-mates are going to be better than the respective ‘84 originals. The faces on Variator, Rig, and Hunk are just weird, and their oddly-smooth, kibble-free forms make them look like toddler toys.

Grump is fine, this is definitely not worth the preorder headache of trying to get a $150+ FT replacement, especially for Gears.

Not to mention that alt mode is a little too goofy for me.

I like him, but his face looks like a human trying to squeeze his head through two prison bars.

I have to say, I'm very disappointed with the FT reveals of late. Just expensive sidegrades to figures I already have decent representations of.

Everyone, come on with the criticisms. Stop giving Variator the Gears.
