Should we have a rest from Transformers comics for a year if Hasbro can’t find a decent new publisher?

If IDW loses the license and there's not a new publisher, the brand taking a rest from comics will be inevitable.

Because of stuff like this, there's about four different people who all lay claim to creating Venom.

Who would have a claim aside from Michelinie and McFarlane?

Some fan called Randy Schueller made a rough concept for it at 1982, which Jim Shooter paid him 200 for the idea.

Mike Zeck designed the suit for it, based on Shooter's specifications of it being black and white

John Byrne also had the idea of a suit that would repair and heal itself during his time when he was writing Iron Fist, but shelved the idea. Roger Stern asked if he could use the suit idea and apply it to Spiderman. Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz would contribute the sentient alien and weakness to sonic energy aspect.

Michelinie's contribution is creating a villian that was able to slip through Peter's spider sense and its consenquences to his crime fighting career as well as his personal life; but after these ideas were rejected by Marvel editors he gave the "spider man genetic material" aspect and was given the green light.

At least a year. Hasbro needs to decide what The Transformers story is about and which publisher can best tell that story. The comics were successful when they were about heroic Autobots vs evil Decepticons. Even after all of Dreamwave’s sins, the creatives made bad-ass comics. That’s what drives me so nuts. Transformers have the potential to be such awesome comics. That potential has been wasted. Let Transformers rest awhile. People at Hasbro should get some back issues and do a side by side comparison of current IDW and Dreamwave comics. The difference in quality would be staggering. Maybe that would open a few eyes.

What made Dreamwave so good was they came out swinging with that first miniseries in a time when nostalgia for G1 was beginning to stir and people were excited to see old battles between the original Optimus Prime and Megatron again after what had been for most (I.E. cartoon fans) well over a decade. Even if you gave Transformers a year hiatus, that's really not enough time to build back up that kind of excitement and demand for the comic again no matter the quality of the new title.

To tie it back to the point about Kirkman and Invincible rights, this kind of ownership dispute is why there's a kernel of truth in what Kirkman claimed. A media company doesn't want to license an adaptation only to be sued later by others claiming rights. That's not to grant that was the motivation for Kirkman, and his alleged approach was manipulating and unjust, but there was more at stake than just screwing over a creative partner.

It's noteworthy that in recent years especially, some creators have been successful at reclaiming ownership rights from companies, especially in movies where the screenwriter is not necessarily work-for-hire. Comics creators have had much less success pursuing that goal.

Similar issues over complex or disputed rights affect toys based on actors. Major franchises like Star Wars and Marvel explicitly require that actors hand over likeness rights. Many smaller and older franchises did not do the same. So, for example, while NECA has the rights to make Back to the Future merchandise, they still have to secure likeness rights directly from the actor. You'll never see a George McFly figure because Crispin Glover has no interest in the merchandise.

As a fan and collector, corporate ownership of IP tends to be a good thing for media and toys. As someone who values the creative talent that is responsible for those things, the current situation leaves a lot to be desired.

Yeah, when DW came out, G1 was pretty much dead. People were starved for G1 references in the other series. Now it’s a little harder because G1 has become the main toyline and most of the fiction is based on G1, so it would have to be special to pull people in.

Maybe they are saying it because it is true? Cowboy Bebop. Doctor Who. Black Widow. Masters of the Universe Revelation. Santa Inc. Matrix Resurrections. Y The Last Man. The list of shows and movies getting audience backlash and underperformed, or got cancelled or rebooted keeps growing. Clearly, the majority has had quite enough, and Netflix and Hollywood is starting to realize they WILL go broke if they keep this up. The comics industry does not yet notice that maybe they should cater to fans who actually buy their comics, not to influencers.

I stopped around page 23 and came back only now. Lack of time. Also topic is not locked.

Nope. Not true. Quintesson Pit sold out the second day. Then WEEKS later they put it up again for preorder for 3 months later. I was there, topics exist of people complaining they did not get one as it sold out.
Ravage set never sold out on the end of the second day. I know, I kept checking. I am not pushing narratives here. Anyone can look this up.

You need to put in context that the Quintessons set was also availble for preorder MONTHS before release while Ravage was only available AFTER Pulsecon. What sold out was the initial preorders for the Quintessons and only for a little while.

There's guys who on here who are still insisting that they are going to bounce back from bankruptcy, so no, we aren't.

It's entirely possible that they could though. You seem to be the one insisting that it's a foregone conclusion, others seem to be discussing possibilities.

The Quintesson set went up for order during Pulsecon as an in stock order. Some orders took time to get out, but officially it was in stock and was not available for preorder months prior to release.

Sure. They have had multiple chances to course correct, however, so I don't think they will. It doesn't mean the end of TF comics, however. The same way that DW didn't kill it either.

They are estimated to go into it by some point in 2023. This has been determined by their finances for a while now, and the fact that Hasbro is pulling their licenses suggests that it's likely.

Stating that Hasbro is pulling licenses is total conjecture. We have no idea why IDW is losing the licenses, or who initiated it.
