It's been a while since I've done any 3d modelling and I wanted to try and start over and make a transforming figure. I read the War Within recently and I love how those designs look so I wanted to try tackle one, and hopefully 3d print it in the end. Heads up, I'm not very experienced with this sort of 3d program so there bound to be a lot of issues. So here's what I have (if I figure out how to work the images): And then the 'alt mode'. I haven't actually purposefully put in any transformation joints so what's here is just coincidental. When I'm happy with the robot mode I'll clean this up drastically. This is really all I have of now, but in the finished thing I hope to add a lot more detail. Maybe not as much as something like Siege but I want it to look good. I do struggle with a lack of motivation with these 3d projects though... so if I don't update in a few weeks I give you permission to bombard me with messages.
Arms are looking close to being finished. I reckon other than detail I just need to add his hand and a way for it to flip inside the forearm for alt mode
Update! Figured out how to flip the parts so I have a complete set of limbs now. Lots of minor tweaks to the whole thing: I'm pretty proud of the shoulder joints. I don't know if they'll actually work when 3d printed but as of now they looks cool and work really well. Close up : The head is just a placeholder until I figure out how to actually do headsculpts. I'm hoping that maybe by christmas I'll have the entire robot done so I can shift over to figuring out the extra transformation joints and of course the final detailing. Feedback and criticisms much appreciated
Lots of minor tweaks and resizing of bits done. Added hands - which don't look the greatest - and some toe bend too: Hands essentially have the one hinge for al the fingers, just need to change sizes a bit so he can hold 5mm accessories. Fiddled with this back panel as well, and it completely covers his back now, which is nice. I tried making him a noggin but I always struggle with heads and this one's no different. He's missing a mouth as I have no idea how to go about making that in 3d form.. This one looks a lot nicer in the quality department because I made it in Blender rather than Solidworks.. which I forgot to install the rendering component. Also, looks like I'll be doing this one on a short deadline.
Cheers for the nice feedback! I haven't massively thought it through but if I can, then yes. Also I couldn't help myself and imported it and rendered it in Blender. When you put his head on you can tell his shoulders are too high. Hopefully, lowering them should make him look better and help with transformation, when I get round to it. Head still not done, by the way
No problem, I've used the past year to do more learning and experimenting with the 3D modeling and printing. I can't say I've reached those levels of modeling yet, but I have learned a lot about the printing part. By that, I mean how designs sometimes need to be adapted for print, rather than function. Parts printing in thin-air for example ! I've not managed to print transparently yet, at best I get translucent.
Thanks! I've been making a few tweaks over the past couple of days but nothing major... yet. Few tweaks are leg size, head is a bit smaller (I know it's clipping here, I've yet to add a joint for the head) and the shoulders are significantly lower. This helps a lot with the transformation, plus I think it looks more proportionate than the high shouldered look. There's an upwards hinge too so you can still have them higher. Even since this render I've changed it a bit but I can't be bothered to wait half an hour for it to render lol Been trying to work on the transformation as well, now While this isn't much to look at, this is what I can get from the existing joints in robot mode. It's actually pretty similar to what it's meant to be - just a few changes to be made Hopefully I'll have something more interesting by next Monday.
Oh no. While the transformation seemed quite straightforward, in practice it's a proper nightmare. I've more or less got the arms to line up where I want them in alt mode thanks to some double jointed elbows I added Something about them looks off to me, but I've been told they look fine Still haven't made start on the leg transformation, though. My main issue is the arms intersecting with the waist in alt mode: The forearms go through the top of the waist and then the biceps are intersecting through the edges of the waist too. I have no clue how I can fix this besides making the wait smaller, which I think'd look really weird. If anyone has any ideas that would be much appreciated
Realised it might help if I widen the chest a bit. Hopefully that won't make his robot mode look any worse
I applaud anyone who decides to model and print a figure. This is a job well done. I miss Solidworks.
I haven't done anything over the christmas week at all. I managed to do a tiny bit today, but considering I have 5 days left till my license runs out, I doubt I'll finish him in time No nice renders this time as I didn't feel like faffing about in Blender for half an hour, sorry. I've widened the chest for transformation and the waist area is a bit more drafted outwards towards the top. I've also redone the windshield, but as a side effect of changing the chest thickness, the windshield is wider too so it's now wider than it is tall - but it should be square-ish. Oh well, I'll live. I still need to figure out how to do the legs but at the moment I don't really feel like doing any at all. Also, is the chest too wide/waist too thin? I'm starting to see why the old titanium figures turned out the way they did... lol
Very cool. I’ve always been partial to this design, as I love toy homages, and having the head behind the windshield recalls the original toy. I’m hoping to try to recreate and print the War Within Jetfire design eventually, when I’ve developed more skill with 3D modeling.
So as you mighta guessed, my license ran out. I can get a new one, but I honestly think I'll stick with fusion360 if I can as it's meant to be easier. I'm honestly really stuck on where to go to now, because the way it was in before my license ran out was a proper mess and it's a right headache. I think I might redesign most of it from the ground up to be accurate to just one image of him, as before I was trying to be accurate to him throughout the comic where he's drawn super inconsistently. I also want to put more effort into the alt mode, because what it ended up looking like when I was still doing it in solidworks looked something like swiss cheese lol. I'm also not feeling super motivated right now, so this might take a reaaaaallllyy long time. Also check out edjodapro2468's work on war within jazz, it looks awesome (I've no idea how to embed a link lol)
I've not done too much 3D modelling, and only with a view to printing. If there's one thing I've come to appreciate a whole lot more, is how many many hours go into redesigning large chunks of the model, just to try and get one part just right.
h holy shit this looks amazing, after seeing this i looked at a few other tww designs and noticed the common theme of pipes in lower chest, I will def be replicating on jazz as it looks awesome and sorta enginelike?
