It means "imagine saying 'to hell with public safety'" over Toy Fair, of all things.

Because it's not a show for revealing product to customers, that's just incidental. It's a show for companies to meet and greet with toy retailers and buyers, for smaller toy manufacturers to make connections and get their product out there.

People keep looking at this from a customer impact perspective, when that's not the purpose of the show at all. What gets lost with no ToyFair isn't just product reveals, there are larger industry impacts particularly for smaller and/or new manufacturers.

TF is a PR trade show that we Joe public would never have previously had a window into except through trade journals and pictures released by various collector friendly media outlets. That is until fan channels happened and all of a sudden a sweaty unshaven YouTuber with a camera could get a press badge and start wandering the halls of the Javitz likely getting quizzical looks from the PR & marketing people at insert name of toy company. Fast forward to whenever the last TF was held in person and we the collector community think we've always had unfettered access to this show. We haven't and that's fine. When we were kids we didn't care. Product showed up on shelves and we bought it. Today we have so many other channels for getting access to official and unofficial images that we're practically drowning in it. All of that said, and longer blather rant short, I could care less if the official show happens. Just show me stuff that I can eventually buy. Whether that be virtual walk thru's, events like Pulse con or whatever it may be. Just show me all of the things.

The whole point of NYTF is everyone under one roof.

If it goes virtual, why would Hasbro care what Mattel is doing? They'd do their thing at the best time for them and Mattel would too.

Those are the real losers here. Hasbro, Mattel, etc won't suffer because they're big enough to go get attention.

But little companies who count on their presence at ToyFair to draw people in to the building for their displays suffer.

This is probably the end of Toyfair. The went downhill in the early 00s, the Hasbro building became a Home Depot, the Mattel building became a Barnes & Nobel. The Toy building is now Eataly (an Italian market/restaurant food court) with a Lego store. Moving everything to the Javits center was a good idea, but with the age of online and the closing of many large and small businesses, it is more cost effective and convenient for large companies like Hasbro to now have there own events like fan first and pulsecon. Smaller companies like Mythic Legions and Valaverse in 2022 do not really need to be at Toy Fair, as there product is consumed direct to the customer and speciality online stores.

My meta, while reading the statement, was to be reassured as to my original behaviour; empathy was my course-correction, but, it was only inspired by the superficial, thus my return to the deconstruction.

To everyone who's read the statement: believe in the power of forums!

I am confident that it will return when appropriate. There is far more to the toy industry than big companies selling to collectors. It's like any other industry trade show, there will be enough people in industry who want to get to together. Some companies will step out at various times for sure, but there's enough out there that will come together.

It'll only come back if the big names feel a need for it. If they have found a groove with the new model, they'll see these as an unnecessary expense....especially when they can just do a stream or release a presser when it works best for them rather than having to ensure they have various products ready to go in time for a set convention.

Toyfair is more then the large manufacturers and collectible toys. It's all games and toys, things like yo-yos, stickers, costumes, board games, almost everything for children that is being produced for the calendar year. The event that is Toy Fair started because, in NYC way before any of us were born, each part of the city was known for certain things, you had the fabric/textile area, antique area, etc. Toys were in there own area, and probably in the 1920s (the Toy building is huge old NYC architecture), and Toy Fair was there until some point in the 00s when companies like Hasbro and Mattel moved out of there own buildings. A company like McFarlane which started off in a small show room in one of the smaller Toy buildings, grew to a larger show area in the Javits.

It's a news thread, it won't get closed. Nor should it have to.

As for the decision to cancel, it was a good one. There are other options that are much safer and far more accessible.

Might as well just show us the whole line and open up all the pre-orders at this point cause this is getting ridiculous. Humanity’s handling of this fucking pandemic is the reason I’m glad we keep getting these leaks. Retailers can’t even commit to releasing full wave so they should have everything available for pre-order at this point and release things whenever they can for each individual item.

Incompetent idiots deserve to lose money regardless of what side there on. The moment I get my hands on Dragon Megatron I’m done with this fucking brand anyways. Avoid it all you want but this whole decade is going to get political whether you like it or not!

Then people need to control themselves better. I had a post removed and it wasn't political, but it did cross lines without me even intending it to. When it hit me, I realized where I screwed up. If I can learn from my mistake, others can too.

People can control themselves, they choose not to.

I agree that humanity sucks. I agree that pre-orders just need to pop up. I disagree about the last part. It'll get that way outside of the forum, in the real world. It doesn't have to get that way, here. Again, people CHOOSE to make it so. They don't have to, but they wish to violate the rules anyway. I'd love for someone to point out to me where it's said this is so and so's personal blog, Facebook group, website, etc. I'm waiting. Oh, what's that? It's not? Ah. There it is. Follow the rules or get ejected, people. It's really not that difficult. If one can't handle not bringing real-world problems into the board, then perhaps they shouldn't be here because they can't handle themselves.

At its core, this entire thing is about selfishness and greed. You can't put a political slant on that, because it's on all sides of all fences. If someone tells you otherwise, they're lying to you and if you believe it, you're lying to yourself.
