Can't they just change Jason's last name and get around the Vorhees issue? Jason Borgueese. Sounds sort of similar but is different. Even if the last name is never said, Jason is the name people know & that can't be copywrited. Probably 1000s of films/TV with a character named Jason in them.

They really do have to just work together if they want to make $$. Owning the script to the first film is nice and all but 99% of people when they hear Friday the 13th, think of Hockey Mask Jason. Who the hell thinks of his mom or little mutant boy over Hockey Jason?

Yeah. It really is a case where both sides just have to put on their big-boy pants, be adults about it, and hammer out a deal. I’m all for Victor finally getting his due after waiting the 35+ years to take advantage of the Copyright Act of 1976.

It’s like watching Disney battle it out (and win) against the estates and/or creators of Winnie the Pooh and various Marvel characters. And in many cases, the arguments are even stronger in favor of those creators than they were for Victor. And it’s disheartening to see the actual creative talent stomped on, or to see their heirs and estates underpaid or stripped of royalties by massive companies, whose greed can never be satisfied.

So to see the actual creator win for a change is incredible. I hope this goes a long ways towards establishing precedent for other creators, who never got to cash in on the success of their creations.

Don’t know. Might be a legal risk no one’s willing to take.
But in addition, they also can’t use Pamela Voorhees, Camp Crystal Lake, or Camp Blood (Camp Blood comes from part 1, right?).

    Totally.
And it is an interesting situation, where Victor has gone on record saying he never watched the sequels or liked the idea of making Jason the villain, and that he doesn’t care about the franchise. If he had written the sequels, I doubt Friday the 13th or Jason would’ve ever become icons.

Does anyone who didn't grow up in the '80s even care about F13 anymore anyway? It says a lot when a Michael Bay remake is better than the last several movies from the original series. And Freddy vs Jason is probably the last one I actually enjoyed. Other than Jason's iconic appearance combined with his musical sting, I don't think the franchise really has much left going for it at this point.

I've got it; film in Canada and call him Jason Poutine!! We've got no shortage of summer camps and hockey masks.

In all seriousness, I'd love to see Jason come back, I read about an idea of a sequel that picks up after part 6, which I think is perfect, as it cleans up the incoherent continuity of parts 8, 9 and Jason X (a movie I still thoroughly enjoyed, as bad as it was). But this is all my generational bias, none of what's going on here gives me any hope.

Part of me wants a reboot with Pamela Voorhees as the main killer of the franchise. Yeah, I like Jason, but I can't help thinking how this franchise would turn up if it was about the grieving-went-psycho mother who goes after irresponsible camp counselors or terrible parents instead of just horny teenagers.

Judging by the response to fan films like Never Hike Alone & Never Hike in the Snow, I’d say a lot of people out there still care.

Never Hike Alone was really terrific! It’s up there with IV and VI as my personal favorite Friday the 13th media.
Never Hike in the Snow was decent as well.

Those are cool but I don't know how you're getting anything more than a niche cult audience from the response to them. 4 years and less than 100k likes? That's not really indicative of a huge audience, and I don't see anything to suggest the 89k likes are from anyone other than 1980s kids.

Well, clearly, someone thinks it’s valuable enough to spend 5+ years and I don’t know how much money duking it out in court over the rights.

Every t-shirt sold, every fridge magnet, every Spirit store costume or coffee mug- Friday the 13th is still a huge moneymaker.

Yeah, nostalgia is huge. I'm kind of looking for something to tell me there is more than nostalgia. Are there new generations of fans? Like kids in high school now who are looking forward to a new Friday the 13th movie? Or is it just the old fans hanging on? I don't know how to tell.

    Don’t know.
I kinda feel like it’s one of those things where even people that don’t bother to watch the movies, know what Jason’s all about and just like the idea of him more than anything else.

Like people that like the idea of Superman or whoever but don’t bother to read the comics or watch the shows/movies. But they might still buy a Superman candy bar just cuz.

Yup, Jason has definitely has become one of the characters that almost everyone knows who he is, just by seeing him. You get tons of shows/movies referencing him just by having someone appear wearing a hockey mask (not including a hockey related scene/story). Just the other week, watched Christmas Vacation and Clark walks out of the garage wearing a hockey mask to trim the tree. It was clear what the reference was.

Well, one advantage about Jason is they can bring him back at any point, because he can be played by anyone. Freddy will always be Englund. Chucky's voice will always be Dourif. But Jason is a guy/corpse in a mask. If they do bring him back though, count me in the camp that prefers ties to the original series, rather than another remake.

Yeah, there’s something about the original 8 from Paramount that no one seems to be able to recapture. Some kind of tone or something. It shouldn’t be hard. They did it 8 times. But nothing since part 8 has felt like a Paramount F13.

I agree, but that seems to 80s horror movies in general. There is something about the way they were filmed that feels completely different from the way they were filmed in the 90s. Like we recently watched Chopping Mall and Phantom of the Mall Eric's Revenge and then the original Candyman and Tales from the Hood and the mall duo from the 80s felt unique compared to the two 90s films. I really liked Tales from the Hood, and I was amazed at how relevant the social commentary is relevant today, but it lacked something special that. Does that make any sense?

I don't know that anyone can organically re-capture the spirit of the 80's. Plenty of films and shows try, some even come close, but I find they tend to sink into either a minefield of nostalgic references, or they do the 80's cheese with a self-aware wink and nod, whereas some of those old films were hilariously bad, but were actually trying to be serious and scary.
