No one knows for sure what will happen. I hope the line continues. I heard about it on Spector Creative's YouTube channel, he did a video on it recently.
I mean if anything, Mattel just has to pay money to Universal now to make all toys instead of when they make Filmation ones. The only thing that could be a monkey wrench is the first look clause which Mattel had going till 2022. Unless they colossally fuck this up, Universal would have no reason not to have them continue to make toys. Hasbro had this drama a few times when Star Wars was up for renewal. Plus Universal would lose potential revenue too. If they pulled the plug on Mattel’s time with MOTU and gave the license to Hasbro, it’s at least 2-3 years of development with them to get their MOTU stuff to shelves while Mattel is pumping out the product.
Universal, like any other company, makes no secret about what products they have the rights to, just look at anything for Jurassic Park/World. Why would it be kept a secret if they actually somehow owned MOTU? I’m so confused.
The example you presented reveals you aren’t confused at all. You absolutely grasp the stupidity of the claim.
I'll never understand how this story has gained so much traction. The idea that Universal allegedly purchased MOTU in the 90s only to never have their name on any of the trademark info for like 30 years is just dumb. The idea that Mattel sold off one of it's more profitable brands from less than a decade earlier because they needed cash seems unlikely as they still had other brands like Barbie and Hot Wheels that have always done pretty well. Plus, of all the people Mattel could sell MOTU to, why would a movie studio want it when the MOTU movie underperformed at the box office several years earlier? Either Scott is confused about Universal/DreamWorks owning the Filmation cartoon rights with owning the entire IP or he's being dishonest for the sake of getting attention. Either way, Mattel has put this to rest at one of their panels recently and the whole thing makes absolutely no sense when you consider there's absolutely no proof of such a deal ever taking place.
It's honestly hilarious. It's like saying Hasbro will lose the rights to make Transformers toys because Sunbow (if it still existed) owns the rights to the G1 cartoon.
They're back up at Walmart because who the hell knows why? Bret: Robot or human? Slaughter: Robot or human? Andre: Robot or human? Junkyard: Robot or human?
I'm immensely confused as to why the designer in question talks about this non-existent sale. What does he have to gain by spouting nonsense? He's usually rational.
Because 1) He's pissed than Mattel fired him, and 2) It drives viewers to his YouTube channel and makes him $
I think Scott's comments about Origins are driven more by him as a collector rather than an industry professional. He's also downplayed the role of vehicles in a toyline, but then he also says he himself doesn't even collect them when he talked about his Star Wars collection, and that was the instance that made me realize that maybe he isn't as unbiased as he'd like to think he is. I also think he doesn't like Origins because it isn't Classics, which was his baby.
I think you might be onto something. He's exceptionally confident in his statements, regardless of if they're true or in this case, false.
I do agree with him on one thing, that a toyline's success can be measured by the manufacturer's willingness to invest in new tooling, especially unique tooling. The fact that we know there's a Mantenna in the works should be some proof of that. Personally I'm still waiting for them to invest the money and effort into some D-tier characters to be absolutely certain, like Extendar or Rio Blast.
I love how the low rating is all centered around it being out of stock. (read some of the Andre comments for the 1 star rating)
Scott is a grade A nutcase, certifiable. He claims all of this BS crap because Classics was taken away from him and given to Super 7. Not once NOT ONCE has any Mattel product from MotU had the Universal logo on it, in fact legally it would be required to have the Universal logo on the packaging as a product OWNED by Universal. The plain and simple truth of the matter is he's bitter and spiteful and trying to destroy the thing he claims he loves because he lost his cushy best job ever when Classics failed to continue. MotU has 3 toylines on store shelves right now, 3 and all of them are property of Mattel. The Filmation Library was sold to Universal, they own the cartoons He-Man, She-Ra, BraveStarr, Blackstar, The Filmation Ghostbusters and any other cartoons that Filmation created. That is what Universal owns. And anybody who believes that MotU is going to be gone from store shelves in 2023 has no concept as to how toylines and Intellectual Property operates.
I agree, he seems to be seething over the MOTU lines, especially Origins. Remember when he took that one single photo of stocked shelves from a store in the Mid-West and proclaimed the line was shelf warming and likely dead by the end of the year? The bigger question is why in the world do so many people seem to believe him? By his own admission he has no insider knowledge or strong contacts within Mattel now and seems to have a terrible understanding of copyright law and intellectual property rights. But yet he says this one thing and idiots take it as gospel.
People are strange in how they choose to accept or follow other people. This is the guy who was a brand manager once in his life, or something to that effect, and he seems to have it all well put together when he phrases things, but in truth I honestly couldn't say why people are taking his word as law when the company themselves has gone and told them TO THEIR FACE that is not true. I presume it is because they will accept somebody who has more insight into their favorite toyline because at one point he was heavily involved with it and all that following a strong leader stuff about human nature. Personally I once thought as they did. I got better. Educate yourself and you can weather any doom and gloom the sky is falling clickbait garbage.
@PurpleStuf Sounds like you have nothing to worry about, so I think you can stop believing these rumors of the line ending or certain characters no longer being made.
