I thought I remembered an article refuting that it was Budiansky and that it was actually Jim Shooter? (Which is why I didn’t post that specifically, couldn’t remember for sure)

think about the year the Cassette Man came out though. toys like that were based on real world things at the time and didn't require the same permissions to make that toys of today require. Somewhere out there is that toy's real world design. the literal only thing I might see that the company who produced it took was to have the buttons on front by the tape door. It was rare back then. but trust me, designs did exist for them overseas. I used to see so many similar designs at fleamarkets back in the late 70s/early 80s.

The closest thing I've seen so far is this:

other than the buttons missing from the front, this design here could have been inspiration as well:

I think they thought about how the robot mode should look like then put the details where they should go in order to make the robot look like their expectations, same goes for Blaster. I mean they're not the only ones to have an undetermined alt mode, i.e. some minibots

It could have been Shooter. I usually assume Budiansky did the majority of the names, and unfortunately neither of them can remember who came up with what. "Bluestreak" sounds more like Budiansky, to me, particularly since it ties into his personality, which Budiansky wrote.

Thanks actually not right, it's missing the NACA Duct, wrong grill, and wing. Here is the real one (well close, this has the crappy US bumpers)
