Gwen's the outstanding one here IMO since now there's an army of multiverse Gwens, and from behind the scenes stuff, they seemed to have been a few serious considerations about bringing her back with some of the stories since "Brand New Day", but someone in charge always vetos the idea. If we keep getting Aunt May and Harry Osborn back, I think we could stand brining the original Gwen back without ruining the impact of "The Night Gwen Stacy Died".

I've finished reading Dawn of X Volume 9 and part of 10 and I'm all kinds of confused on some aspects. First off, they seemed to have gotten New Mutants in my X-Men as half of issue 7 seemed to focus on them and some King Brood egg rather than the X-Men. Okay, fine, but how about telling me why there is some dude who looks like a Brood in a business suit, talking like a normal person, and hanging out with the X-Men on Krakoa like it's a normal thing???? I want to know that story. Anyway, it was cool to see the Brood return, though issue 8 ends with Cyclops, Jean, Havok, Vulcan, and several others in space even though Jean is on Earth in X-Force issues 8 and 9. Wait, what? How is she there when she is in space too????

Those X-Force issues were a bit odd even though I did like the plant creatures. It really gave the thing a horror vibe. The New Mutants was fine too with Magma going home to an undiscovered Roman Empire city. That's cool. Cable #1 was a lot better than I was anticipating and kind of funny. So he's a different cable from the normal one? Interesting.

As for the Giant Sized issue revolving around Nightcrawler, I highly enjoyed it even though I have no idea what Lockheed was doing there. Last I saw Lockheed he was with some brother and sister that saved him from drowning. They never actually showed him return to Krakoa.

That's Broo - An intelligent Brood that's not a Queen or King. He's been involved with the X-Men for a while.

I’m betting no. There have been other pushes for the Eternals, but like the Inhumans, or the Imperial Guard, they don’t really take. You can tell some really great stories about a group of non-human characters in an isolated location, but doing that month to month year after year usually doesn’t take. Guardians of the Galaxy has a similar problem, though you can go for a long time with it’s space opera setting before you end up taking a hiatus and trying again.

American comics want to maintain that feeling that it’s happening right outside your window. Straying from that allows you to tell neat stories, but usually puts an expiration date on your book.

Yeah for me, I'd read a Guardians book more similar to the DNA books, the one that really tried to make use of cosmic Marvel and the different worlds and threats that the earthbound heroes just don't get to interact with too much. I mean I get why Marvel wants to do a lighter take on them similar to the movies, but for me, it's tougher to find a writer to do that sort of story in the books.

Yeah the DNA take is my jam. I didn’t enjoy Bendis’s “Space Avengers” take. But as great as DNA was (and it inspired all that came after, including the movies) it only lasted 24 issues due to poor sales. It’s hard to make something too far removed from the modern day earth work.

I am curious about that, I havent read it in a while but it seemed like it was planned to end with the Thanos Imperative that basically took almost a ton of people off the table. I do remember them trying to restart it with Annihilators but that didn’t really catch on like the Guardians.
I was really intrigued by the teases they had for the Cates run, especially that gatefold artwork where almost all the big cosmic heavy hitters were on it. Its too bad the run we got never really managed to explore that potential.

There’s an interview somewhere out there (Cosmic book news?) where DNA talked about what would have happened with Nova and the Guardians post Thanos Imperative. But sales were low, so that was it for both monthly books. They were given Annhilators to try again but that was a bust too. It’s a shame as Annihilation to Thanos Imperative is IMHO the best Cosmic Marvel era ever printed, and up there in the best Marvel Eras ever.

Unfortunately Bendis and Valentino figured out how to run GotG over a long monthly run. Valentino used a lot of cameos and guest stars of future versions of Marvel characters. Bendis tied the team to the Avengers and X-men as tightly as possible. I just don’t care much for either approach.

I feel it should be worth noting that the teaser doesn’t specifically say they’ll be fighting each other, cause for all we know this just another team up crossover.

I agree with the DnA era being up there among the best Marvel eras ever, the freedom they got to play with a bunch of low key properties really enabled them to do their own thing, and do it well. Given all the exposure and later acclaim the Annihilation era got though, it’s reallu surprising Marvel hasnt really tried to capitalize on the other possible threads left with some good creators.

Some of it got picked up on. Hickman and others used the Terrigen Bomb on Earth (tying into Ms Marvel’s origin). Hickman reforms the Annihilators during Infinity. Hickman also picks up on the reborn Annihilus in Fantastic Four. Part of my love for Hickman’s F4 and Avengers is that it’s the spiritual successor to DNA’s work.

Bendis ran away from a lot of DNA’s stuff as fast as he could, but he did pick up on the assorted galactic empires getting really annoyed at Earthlings causing chaos. Other GotG writers have picked up things like the Fraternity of Raptors, Nova Corp changes, etc.

It’s been fairly influential going forward.

And Ewing’s run harkened directly back to those DNA days.

Yeah Ewing seems to have been influenced by that run a lot. It’s a big influence on his Guardians run, and it has themes in common with his Ultimates run too.
