This is very sad news, very unexpected. Rest in peace. He had a great love for transformers it showed in all of his work. Especially for transformers animated, that show was a love letter to the fans. He did his very best to make sure there was something there for every fan. Thankyou for being a big part of this frachise.
Just found about this. His work on Teen Titans and TF: Animated were such a big part of my childhood. He will be greatly missed. RIP.
I am deeply saddened to learn this news. Derrick Wyatt was an influential artist and a credit to the animation community. His designs are so memorable and distinct. Whenever I think of Fred from Scooby Doo, Ratchet from Transformers and Starfire from Teen Titans I will usually think of the versions from the shows he worked on above any earlier depictions. He leaves behind a tremendous legacy of work, not the least of which being his wonderful and surprising Transformers Animated. Many condolences to his loved ones and his co-workers touched by his creativity. Rest well, sir. ~L~
I was fortunate enough to meet Derrick at a Botcon, albeit briefly. I was even able to share some of my fan works with him, as he was a judge of the art contest that year. He will be greatly missed, both in the industry and the many fan communities his work has touched.
Teen Titans 2003, Legion of Super-Heroes, Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, and Ben 10: Omniverse. (I think he also did Mucha Lucha because Jorge R. Gutierrez regaled a tale where the latter met the former while the former was leaving to do Teen Titans? But I can’t be certain.) But yeah, DJW was in tons of places. (Funnily enough, DJW's LOSH cartoon is how I learned about the LOSH in the first place, hence why I’m infuriated about what Bendis pulled with his nonsense. If Bendis somehow uses DJW's passing as a way to prop himself up, I swear to God...but I digress.)
RIP Mr Wyatt, thank you for contributing to the TF universe in a massive and impressive manner that could (for the most part) satisfy both old and new TF fans.
Every TF fan but me seems to know Derrick and his work quite well, but I will say I absolutely adored his designs for TF Animated. I tend to enjoy all of the animated iterations to one degree or another, but Animated was such an enormous pivot (in a good way) that you couldn't help but take notice of its stark difference to anything that had come before. I'm sure super fans could point out a handful of ways that previous animated iterations were as equally out there (maybe Beast Machines?), but to be out there and good is a rare mixture. Oil Slick in particular is and will remain my absolute favorite design from that show. Your work will be missed Derrick. God bless.
Absolutely stunned. Derrick was VERY active online. I followed him on Instagram because he was always posting new stuff when I browsed the daily posts. Damn. I am shocked. We could probably pinpoint when he passed by viewing his last posting times on his various social media accounts. 2 weeks ago is so sudden. Angel, Orenstein, Goldner, and now Derrick. This year has been tough for the TF community. This sucks. This really sucks. I will greatly miss seeing his new daily doodles. RIP.
Rest in peace and respects to his family and friends. I had the honor of him winning an eBay listing I had for a Botcon Sweep back in the day. When I realized that he was the buyer I geeked out and asked if he could sign a figure for me and I gave him a discount. He was happy to do so and I have an autographed Animated Swindle that has been in a case in my collection ever since. Thank you very much for your vision of Transformers and the legacy that Animated left on the fandom. You will be greatly missed.
Poor guy. Any details on what he died of? COVID perhaps? His redesigns for TF Animated were awesome and unique, and I really liked them. I similarly enjoyed a lot of his art work on Ben 10 Omniverse. However, he was perhaps the first occasion where I realized maybe it used to be better when creators did not directly engage with fans, as he has done some pretty bad overreactions to (admittedly annoying) fan demands instead of ignoring them. Also, on Omniverse he was also responisble for the series plot and ideas, and that was less then stellar. Oddly, I never really seen his work since that show ended, dunno what he worked on, perhaps something I never watched.
I don't mean to get to dark here, but I think this is the begining of a downhill slope for the franchise. All these beloved people are leaving this earth or there jobs .... May they find happiness in these darkened times. Rest in peace, they will all be missed. And for those whom the reaper hasn't claimed yet, persevere. We give your our blessings of hope.
