So Ironshell/Snaptrap/Turtler is a big meaty cheeseburger of a bot, isn't he? I always loved the MechaGamera vibe of Snaptrap and a lot of that remains here, but I think they did a great job capturing a snapping turtle (with teeth) in the head sculpt. Not the most exciting beast in terms of posability, but it's a turtle, so what do you expect?

Transformation is ok. Things don't quite slot, peg, or nestle in as well as his compatriots (at least not so far as I can tell), but it works and produces a satisfyingly big robot mode. Some bits are (or seem) a bit floppy from the transformation, but given how much torso bots often have to sacrifice for the greater good, I very happy with him.

I found my experience to be the same...he's so ugly and odd that he's absolutely fascinating.

It's like "What if a bulldog and a coelacanth had a baby?"

Surely someone figured this out before me?

    Anyway... Nautilator, Deathclaw, Boblobclaw...

I chose to open this figures in numerical order. Had it been in order of interest, Nautilator would have been last. While Overbite was the Seacon I should have loved but didn't, and Skalor the one I loved but didn't know why, Nautilator was the one I just felt nothing for one way or another. He was just there. He didn't even have a particularly noteworthy alt mode. Most of the others were bizarre mutant sea creatures, and Nautilator was just... another lobster.

This figure may have changed that. Sure, he's still a lobster, but its that alt mode that best benefits from modern articulation (with the possible exception of Tentakil, who I hope to get to tomorrow). And that mouth! Lobsters... lobsters and crabs are kinda freaky when you really look at them, and watching them eat? Ugh. Maybe I should hate that the lobster head doesn't really come together, but I love that they gave it a weird mouth that opens to a giant maw able to swallow minibots whole! The claws just look nasty, and they even gave him movable antennae and opening uropods. Such a fun beast mode!

In robot mode, a lot like his teammates in looks and articulation, but you have options (any options are what?). He can carry the carapace like a shield. You can give him robot hands or claw hands, or go all fiddler crab and give him one of each! Then there's the... lobstaur? censter? mode. Surely unintentional, but I love it.

Lastly, one of my great pet peeves in Transformers are bug transformers, specifically their legs. They tend to get everywhere and there's rarely anything good to do with them. Shrapnel, Bombshell, and Kickback kept them to a minimum, but by the time you get to Beast Wars, there's legs everywhere. Even now they are hurting toys like Kingdom Waspinator. So I just love what TFC did here with Nautilator. Who would have thought putting all the legs on the feet and collapsing them up around the shins would be so effective at getting them out of the way? They're not perfect - they don't peg into anything and they do move about a bit if you are posing the legs, but they don't hamper the design either. Once again TFC has found a way to incorporate bits of the beast kibble into the robot design that are there when you look for them, but aren't obtrusive.

Did Tentakil/Thousandkills tonight. Tentakil was the Seacon that always left me confused. As odd as his teammates were, he kind of took it to 11. The others were like kaiju monsters, but Tentakil was a reject from the lowest of the low budget 50s B-movies. Think Octoman crossed with Beluah.

I don't know if they were released in numerical order, but I do think I enjoyed the figures progressively more with each open. Ok, maybe Tentakil wasn't as big a surprise as Nautilator, but he's fun. Transformation felt to be a bit more involved (ie a pain in the ass) than with the other figures, but the reward is a figure with an articulated face! How many toys can say that? And then there's 8 fully articulated arms. Or are they tentacles? Gah! Curse their indifference to cephalopod anatomy! BTW - totally have to thank Bobby Skull Face for showing the transformation to beast mode. And for once he seemed to be having a blast with the toy.

Think I'm going to enjoy these for a few more days before trying to tackle the combined mode.

I said the same...about three weeks ago. Still in individual modes because I just have so much fun messing around with them.

I think the truest test of a combiner team, is if they're fun when separated. These guys definitely are.

So any recommendations for the best limb configurations?

    Color-matched:

Snap trap is green above and magenta below. So green arms, and magenta/pink legs to continue it.

This is how the Headmasters toon does it, and is the likely "intended" arrangement based on how the G1 toy limbs and torso were colored.

Overbite is the only one with purple, so he's the gun.

I prefer the blues as the arms... 1000kills's limbs get in the way either way, but seem less obstructive in arm mode.... plus with Shapeways there's this:

And I really like Deathclaw as a leg... one of my faves of the set really...
The shark is always the gun... unless you do the thing where it has the squid just sitting on the torso for the head.

I keep Bigbite and 10K kills as arms too, the teeth of Bigbite and the tentacles of 10K look better there than on the leg mode.

I’ve been thinking about buying the set, but the bots are about half the size of modern combiners, and I’ll have to change the neck piece which doesn’t look easy. But who else is gonna make a Piranacon with quintuple changing individual bots?

They're probably the best all round Warbotron scale set (well, maybe it's Gravity Builder) but we could really use a Zeta sized Piranacon. I'm a little surprised no one's done the combined modes for all the teams at Zeta scale, imagine getting your combined mode for the price of a newly released Titan.

Do you plan to buy a used set? Only first-run Ironshells had the short neck, I believe all the later runs have the longer neck factory-installed. (they also stopped shipping the replacement necks with Deathclaw).
