That’s likely what will happen. Already rumored we were going to get movie 4-5 characters and game characters down the line, and they’re probably gonna fast track those figures to 2023 now.

It would be really cool if we also got "concept art" figures. I sometimes see people say they preferred one of the considered designs in comparison to the final product.

    I have two thoughts.

1- what pulled me into the thread was me wondering if Hasbro will delay the movie toys they have planned or release them? Releasing them now would be a misstep in many levels, but they may not be able to get anything else out in time now.

    it’ll be interesting.

2- what caught my attention in the thread though was all the assumptions the movie is being held up for massive reshoots.

that is certainly possible, and rarely a good sign. But I think it’s just as possible it’s visual effects problems.

I have no idea if there are pandemic related shortages of visual effects artists right now or not. But even if there aren’t the director does not appear to have done a big visual effects movie before. It sounds like this one is going to be much closer to the scale of the Bay films than bumblebee was. Bay knew more or less how to budget time for that (although apparently Prime and the Fallen’s fight was supposed to have been much longer but was cut short because they ran out of time before the movie’s release), and Travis Knight both had a smaller film with probably fewer visual effects and with his background in animation, quite possibly a better idea of how to budget the time.

For some context- in the movie Gravity that opening 10 minute shot apparently took multiple months to render out (creating the final video/movie).

it is entirely possible that the new director and the team working closely with him just didn’t have the experience to budget time correctly for the scale of the visual effects they need and they’re now realizing they won’t be able to finish the film in time for the release date.

If this is the case, it doesn’t speak to things being done badly and needing reshoots- just that they can’t get the effects done in time and are delaying so they can release a movie that doesn’t have sub par effects.

so it could be a disaster, but it might be fine.

And that's not even taking into account the recent movie industry strike.

I think it's more that we're still in a pandemic and they want to work out supply chain issues. Action and adventure movies typically do best in summer, so even if they only need a few months to work out whatever kinks are in the system, a full year's delay is probably best for their bottom line.

I just wonder how much of the movie's plot will be spoiled by marketing and packaging blurbs on toys released too early?

I'd argue this delay has less to do with the quality of the film itself, and more to do with Viacom/Paramount. They've been trying to get acquired for a while and having a viable franchise in Transformers might make them more tempting. Not great if this movie bombs or Hasbro decides to start shopping their properties around before they can be sold

The strike hasn’t actually happened so far. I’d be confused as well, but I used to work in the industry and have a lot of friends that still do.

they voted to authorize a strike. Then the reps reached an agreement- although the union members have not yet voted to accept the agreement (and the agreement is not well liked). So it’s anybody’s guess if a strike may still be coming (and as you said that could also gum things up pretty badly).

That'd be interesting and that was the plan for ROTB's stuff - the ROTB toyline would come out with the toyline and them SS figure's would release in 2023 so they're more accurate to the movie designs though those will either stay in 2023 or get delayed to 2024 also the Cybertron prequel will probably get delayed.

No studio is going to toss out a half finished movie.

Why release a movie about toys when there is a Global supply chain disruption making it hard to get toys on shelves. Stock up on toys, use the time to perfect the movie, and give yourself time to build up hype. It's a good idea and a smart business move. Not to mention they will have the time to Finnish studio 86 and roll into the 90s movie.
