It's really not bad art, IDW is just stupid to use this particular style for BW.

it would be appropriate for some other franchise to have this stylistic choice, but I don’t believe it is a good fit for Beast Wars. The characters are drawn too simple, too blocky, too flat and I’ve already mentioned the unnatural exaggerated proportions.

I just don’t think any artist can or should apply their own personal art style to any series. It just doesn’t work. The artist needs to match the established tone of the series they are drawing for. That goes for every comic book artist. This isn’t a fresh new start like Animated was, it’s still part of the Beast Wars franchise and is aimed towards existing Beast Wars fans. Obviously the art will be judged by how accurate to the tv show it looks.

But it is a fresh new start. It's not connected to the TV series. It's as much a fresh start for Beast Wars as Animated was for Transformers.

it being the 25th anniversary does connect it to the tv series. It’s not a direct continuation of the tv series, no - but it is still aimed for fans of the tv show. And no, I’m not going to complain whenever a new G1 comic (which IDW1 and 2 are) is not based on the G1 cartoon but the Beast Wars TV show is the prominently dominant entity of the Beast Wars fiction that all future Beast Wars should emulate, even if it is a new continuity featuring the same characters.

It is a complete retelling, therefore by definition it is a fresh start

cry harder about the BW art, guys

i\'m sure they\'ll change it just to satisfy your anxieties.

Now I actively want every TF book to have a visually distinct style that isn\'t More Fucking Sunbow Models.

The best TF artists are those who\'ve made the characters their own - Roche, Zama, Yaniger, Senior, and so on.

You want perfectly accurate character models, go watch Energon

I would guess it has at least a little to do with Thundercracker having been such a prominent part of late IDW 1.0 and not wanting to retread storylines with him. Basically, they may not have anything interesting for him to do yet - or they're saving him for something more interesting. They haven't really done much with the core Lost Light cast either - has Drift even showed up in this continuity yet?

So Alex Milne, Jack Lawrence, and Nick Roche can all go fuck themselves, huh? Do you even know what a personal art style is?

Personal art styles may or may not work with the story they are drawing for.

Spotlight: Kup’s first half worked due to the tone of the first half. Then when the big reveal happened, the tone of the art changed drastically to fit the events in the second half.

For Beast Wars, I don’t think this art style works. It may do for another story but not Beast Wars. Winston Chan knew how to draw a Beast Wars comic for #7 and #8 with beautiful highly detailed art full of expression for characters that looked liked they're supposed to. It’s really embarrassing to have to explain to you that “characters looking like they are supposed to” is a good thing in comics that readers expect.

And did you really try to use the “whatabout” argument?

Good lord, then just say that you don't like this particular style instead of going "no artists should try to use their personal style in comics" and then walking that back immediately once you were given examples of other artists' personal styles. It's really embarrassing to have to explain to you that you can just have an opinion without making these big sweeping statements that are totally incorrect anyway. It's sad to see you so convinced of your own objectiveness when everything you're saying is subjective in the extreme. You pretentious jerk.

Anyway, I think Josh's style is cool. Note how I am saying this without making judgements on other artists' styles or casting doubt on anyone's professionalism.

Holding up a 25 year old CG cartoon, one of the earliest of it's kind, as the artistic lockbox that all future intepretations need to adhere to is a pretty wild want. That cartoon visuals are so dated that it's practicaly a stylized artstyle.

On a personal note, it's also 100% not what I want out of this comic series. The thing about the original cartoon is we already got it. It happened and it's complete and while it's not perfect, it's good enough that I don't need any kind of replication of it. They nailed it the first time, no redo necessary.

Honestly this series already hews too close to the original, what with coopting the highly specific premise presented by the show. The further they can get away from that, the better. (And so far, they've done enough that I'm very interested in seeing where it goes.)
