You hit the nail on the head, as you usually do. Seems like the people who have a strong dislike for the Bay movies don't even have a clue why they were bad in the first place.

One of the only examples I can really come up with is this guy
    D9D90981-95EE-4924-999F-B8A3EDE335D5.jpeg
And as we all know, everyone accepted it instead of being toxic fanboys like us transformers fans. After all, most people hadn’t heard of Deadpool before that movie, so who cares if he isn’t adapted well? Not everything has to be like the comics.

But that points to not so much about changing these characters, rather how it's executed, wouldn't you say?

There are many you could name, but some movie iterations that have changed core elements and/or looks of the "definitive" version of the character -

DCEU: Superman, Batman, Steppenwolf, The Joker (SS), Lex Luthor, Aquaman, Enchantress, Jimmy Olsen, Doomsday...

MCU: Ultron, Bucky, Kang, Vulture, Taskmaster, The Mandarin, Quicksilver, Vision, Scarlet Witch, Nick Fury, Drax, Hawkeye, Spiderman, Abomination...

Those are a mix of characters, some who have had aesthetic changes others who have key core aspects of their stories changed, I'm not going to go into each detail. I'm sure someone more well-versed in the comics could name even more.

I'm a big fan of the MCU & DCEU, and most of these changes work in the movies, but they do make drastic changes to the core elements and looks of characters too. it's not just Transformers.

Also, the 2000s X Men movies are probably the worst offenders, they stripped much of the recognisability factor out of the characters, and there are huge changes to looks and story arks. Wolverine being the main focus, instead of the leader Cyclops, then deciding to make Mystique a main good character, a lot of the stuff in those movies are not faithful to the comics or cartoon in the slightest. Deadpool...

I suppose the difference is for many of these they may have changed visually but they kept their original superpower, or their backstory has been altered but there's still something true to the original. That's not necessarily been the case with a lot of the changes made to TF characters; I mean chances are this version of Battletrap isn't a duocon, and probably won't share any of the characteristics described in the original tech specs. There's a different between changing some details about a character and straight up having two characters with the same name but absolutely no resemblance to each other in any way.

Is Steppenwolf true to the original character? - a monster with spikes. I could name more. I don't think just because a character has the same superpower makes it any different, so hypothetically Wolverine can be a 7ft giant with a pink mohawk as long as he has claws?

Whats wrong with having two characters with the same name let's say they don't die and live they still can develop those traits they had originally but what I have seen from the constant whinning and complaining is that they don't like their characters having dimensions and prefer the same one note dimension.

The problem is that some fans want things to be resemble everything 100 percent. While being faithful is a good idea, creative liberties need to be taken in some areas. What’s funny is that Arcee is a bike yet no one is complaining that she isn’t a cybertronian car. Yes she’s been a bike before, but if we’re gonna apply the alt mode debate to everyone in this movie then she needs to be a car.

Yep. I also don't see as many taking issue with Scourge either. Who is probably the most different in terms of look and character - being a Terrorcon for starters.

Funny how that works. I don’t see a space boat alt mode for him.

No he wasn't and I'm not saying they did all of them right. But the X-men for example may not have had the classic costumes but they still had the their abilities, the thing that made them Storm or Cyclops or Magneto. Obviously a 7ft Wolverine with a pink mohawk wouldn't been anyone's idea of faithful, but that wasn't really the point; you were citing examples where characters have been changed, and I was pointing out that a majority still have enough features that make them somewhat recognisable, not purely in visual sense, but by what they do and their role. The 2007 design for Optimus was definitely recognisable as Optimus Prime, but that's not true for the majority of the movieverse characters. In all those cases it's clear they started with that character but changed them visually or gave them a different backstory, whereas in TF's case it's much more a case of just reassigning a name to a totally new character.
Thus far very few of the robot characters in the movies have had dimensions, even the ones that have survived through most of them.

That alt mode's obviously inspired by RID Scourge though. The problem is, no-one's asked for a 100% identical recreation of G1, just something that follows some kind of precedence. Hence no-one being too cut up about Arcee being a bike because there are more bike versions than car versions of her. I'm happy with them drawing for different sections of the franchise, or creating new characters, but why use a name when the character bears no resemblance to previous versions? Why not find a name of a character who bears any resemblance, or just create a new one?

I loved the fact that at the end of Deadpool 2, when Deadpool gets time travel powers with Cable's gadget, the first thing he does is go back in time and kill specifically that earlier version of himself. And that's on top of the massive burn he delivers in the first film about when Ajax talks about making Deadpool stop talking, DP of course remarks that would piss off a LOT of people.

Excluding Aquaman (who isn't even really that new - I'm guessing you forgot the animated Justice League version with the harpoon arm), were any of those versions even that well received? I'm not a DC man so generally I don't follow the films that closely but I know there was a lot of criticism of Steppenwolf.

Those are a mix of characters, some who have had aesthetic changes others who have key core aspects of their stories changed, I'm not going to go into each detail. I'm sure someone more well-versed in the comics could name even more.[/quote]

The fact freaking Ant Man is not on your list despite being somebody else entirely other than Hank Pym anymore is telling of what you consider "different". Like with Ultron, the only difference there is who builds him (Iron Man instead of Ant Man), but visually he's faithful (even including a reference to his time as the Crimson Cowl at one point). Like, are you making a big stink over purely visual updates? Guys like Vulture had to change because it was a dude in basically a silly mascot costume, not something built in a garage capable of flight. Such updates is the necessity of change brought on by time, and that is hardly the problem with Transformers.

Because this isn't just another cartoon series where it's around for three or four years, where if you don't like a character then you can just wait for the next incarnation. The movies should be a representation of what the franchise is largely seen as, and as much as people bitch, whine, and moan about it - Transformers has and always will mainly be seen as the 80s series. This is a matter of full brand identity, because the movies simply make too much money and are too influential to be regarded in the same sense as something like Prime or Animated.

So here is an honest question for you . Why aren’t you arguing against Scourge and Arcee? If the movies need to be a faithful representations of the 80s cartoon then Scourge can’t be a black truck and Arcee can’t be a bike. They didn’t have such alt modes. Why aren’t you demanding that Bumblebee revert back to being a Volkswagen Beetle? Also where is the Ark and Nemesis? If we need it to be based on the 80s cartoon then we need the Ark and Nemesis to show up.

I also didn’t mention the Maximals, yes we don’t know what they look like yet but we have a good idea. As a fan of Beast Wars I can accept the fact they will not look like their 90s counterparts. Yes I’m hoping they maintain some of their character traits like Rhinox being a tech guy, and Optimus Primal being the gruff uncle, and Cheetor being the hot head who gets into trouble.

My point is that these are new incarnations of established characters. Yes I do hope they maintain the original spirit of their predecessors but I will not hold it against the movie or the people making it.

You can't separate the changes from the execution, though, as they are part of the execution. In contrast, If one looks at old-school Mysterio, and then one looks at the filmic version, you can still tell it is Mysterio-from his fish bowl head down to his cape and by how he acts/what he does and his abilities. If you look at old-school Tony Stark/Iron Man and then look at MCU Tony Stark/Iron Man, I don't think anyone would be confused about them being the same thing. That hasn't always been the case with the Transformers film franchise.

I do agree the Fox versions of the X-Men is an example of being the worst offender-and I recall being schooled years ago on that when I had a discussion with someone who read the comic books when he was growing up. I then went back and cross-referenced what he was talking about (which doesn't seem to be the case with many who just openly accept any changes) and found he was correct-especially in relation to the early Wolverine movies. There are also exceptions, with Steppenwolf movie version vs. the comic book version. When I saw the movie version of Steppenwolf I actually kept remarking how much he looked like a bayverse megatron or decepticon. Are there exceptions in some of the MCU/DCEU cinematic treatments? Yes. However, I still stand by my main point that the film versions of Transformers has made some drastic changes to what came before. I actually like some of the bayverse designs, yet there is alot that, to me, still that I don't agree with. In closing, if a change is sensible and in line with what made a character recognizable and their abilities and character traits, I don't have much of a problem with that, case in point, I'd rather Wheeljack be a repair van than a robotic Albert Einstein clone.

I'll repost my edit to my previous post re Scourge and Arcee:

That alt mode's obviously inspired by RID Scourge though. The problem is, no-one's asked for a 100% identical recreation of G1, just something that follows some kind of precedence. Hence no-one being too cut up about Arcee being a bike because there are more bike versions than car versions of her. Why not find a name of a character who bears any resemblance, or just create a new one?

As for the Maximals, yes we don't know exactly how they'll look but we know they have faithful alt modes to the originals. Conceivably they could make Rhinox a rhinoceros beetle or Airrazor a bat. I'm sure most would be baffled if they made those changes, though, because no existing versions have had those forms.
