The original novel is heavily based upon the middle east, and the sociopolitical realities of the time, and what came before. I have not seen the movie yet, but I feel like you are giving the director too much credit at the expense of the original author. He may have done all of these things in order to get into Herbert's mindset, but a lot of the work you are describing was already there, and is part of the reason why the book has been described as unfilmable.

This makes me happy, as the last trailer looked like it was an action film, which Dune is not.

Good to hear that the new Dune movie seem to finally have been officially released. Now, all we need is the official word about when the adaptation of the second half of the story will see the light of day or, at the very least, if the production of it has even started yet.

Denis is one of my favorite directors, and BR2049 is in my top ten films. Looking forward to Dune despite not being able to finish the book in time (will one day though). Got my tickets for this week

Well the great news for you is that this movie won't even spoil the book for you. You still have at least a year and a half minimum to finish the book before they come back and finish the movie.

Good point! Although I’m still only like a 1/4 of the way through it, so I’m nowhere near as far along as I wanted ^^’ :/ but hopefully seeing the movie won’t diminish my enjoyment of the book. Really hope the movie’s successful enough to get the second part so it’s a cohesive wrap up

...If the eventual Dune Part 2 is as strong as Part 1 bring on Dune Messiah.

Just finished Dune. I wasn’t able to finish the book in time, but as the movie only covers half the book, I got far enough to cover what’s in the movie.

As an adaptation, it’s excellent. *Extremely* well-made and very faithful, with very few, if any, substantive changes. Casting a woman as Liet Kynes doesn’t hurt the character whatsoever, so people don’t need to whine about that. The only real issue is how, as with any movie, they had to make some cuts, so you miss out on a lot of the tense political and conversational sparring from the book. Like, I would have *loved* to see the dinner party scene on the screen, but alas.

Of course now we have to wait to see if Dune: Part 2 will even be made before we can see how the story ends. It hasn’t even been green-lit yet.

Having read (half of) the book, I really enjoyed it, but I can see how those unfamiliar with the story would be completely lost, so I worry about its overall appeal.

And Gurney didn’t sing and play the baliset!

So, uh, does anyone here have issues with
the way Harkonnen is pronounced in this film?

I'm hoping they complete story of the first book. Personally, I now think I wouldn't mind them stopping at the second movie, and ending the story on a relatively happy note. (back when I was a kid, I was really disappointed about how things turned out for the Atreides family. Not quite what I'd expected).

Yeah, I wouldn’t mind that at all myself if only just to be on the safe side of things in case the film(s) didn’t do well enough to warrant a possible adaptation of Dune Messiah and then Children of Dune. Obviously, I really want to see this film to do well enough to warrant another so they can adapt the second half of the story since we have yet to hear an announcement about it getting greenlit but still.

Watched this last night when it dropped on Max. I have to say as someone who hasn't read the book in a good twenty years... Villeneuve really managed to capture Herbert's vision from the novel. They had to make some story cuts for time constraints from what I can remember, but what was adapted seems to have been very faithful to the source material. The actors were all good in their respective roles and I'm particularly impressed with Chalamet considering I'd never seen him in anything before. That said, they certainly picked an interesting place to end Part One (and hopefully they greenlight Part Two)... this is literally the setup for the bigger part of the story. This would be like if Jackson had decided to split Fellowship into two films and the first movie stopped just as Frodo and company arrived in Rivendale. This makes me worry that outside of Dune and big Sci-Fi fans... this might not be terribly accessible to the average Joe Moviegoer... and that has me worried we may not get Part Two which would be a real shame.

How do you pronounce it? I first went through Dune by listening to the audiobook, and while a lot of the movie pronunciations were different, I don't recall that being one of them

The one that bugged me the most was Sietch Tabr. In the audiobook it was pronounced "see-etch ta-boor" with kind of a rolling R at the end, whereas the movie pronounced it kinda "seetch taber"

The only pronunciation that gave me pause in the new film was Padishah

Saw it last night. It was okay. Not great. Pretty disappointing, actually. It does some things better than the Lynch version, but it also does more than a few things worse. In some ways, Lynch made a better Dune movie by accident than Villeneuve did trying his hardest. If Lynch hadn't botched the ending, I'd almost recommend his over the new one.

One thing that's completely crazy to me is that even with the super long run time and that they only covered half of the book, they still managed to skip over some important stuff. Which even then might have been kind of excusable if they hadn't also wasted a lot of time with fluff and covering the same material over and over.

It was fine, but not more than that. Okay for fans of the novels who can mentally fill in the blanks. And for hardcore sf fans, you'll probably find enough to enjoy for it to be worth watching. But for an average moviegoer, I wouldn't recommend it.

Also, I wish I'd watched it at home. It wasn't worth going to the theater for. And I think I would have been able to more easily overlook the repetition and Villeneuve's self indulgence if I'd been watching from the comfort of home, maybe taking a break in the middle or something.

It was okay but I honestly didn’t give a sh*t about any of the characters, and didn’t care what was going on until it was about over ~halfway through.

I do hope it gets green lit for Part 2 though.

I never read the book but seen the Lynch one years ago.

Just saw the movie in IMAX today. Loved every second of it. Probably in my top 10 movies ever. Denis did it again.
The cinematography, the music, the atmosphere, everything was so good.

    I need part 2 ASAP

This movie definitely seems to fall under the acquired taste category.
