No offence But they really need to start planning out their marketing for the movie , creating some hype wont be so bad

Transformers toyline designers: "We need to continually find ways to homage the past via new but respectful takes on existing, recognizable, iconic styles, but with different aesthetic approaches, and by introducing new characters alongside them over the years."

Transformers live action movie designers: "Bee is a Camaro, Wheeljack is a VW, and Mirage is a Porsche in slightly Jazz-like colors. Close enough. Oh and here's a tow truck! What? No, no it's not Hoist. What's a Hoist?"

I kid, I kid. In fact, I'm actually super hyped to see the VW bus. This means we'll get a VW bus alt mode toy. This is one of my favorite vehicles ever made and the idea of mainline toys with that alt mode makes me super excited. Regardless of the movie or anything else. As always, the toys are what matter most to me, and I've learned I can greatly enjoy many of the movie toys regardless of my feelings about the films themselves (some of which I do enjoy.)

You'd think it be obvious that there would've been a Volkswagen Van character in the original G1 cartoon, It was such a popular and recognizable vehicle from that era, seems like a gimme. I find it real surprising.

Honestly, a van makes more sense for a kooky scientist character than a race car.

Not when you remember what G1 actually was.

After all, how popular was the Volkswagen Mini-van in Japan during the late 1970s, which is when what would become the original G1 lineup was designed? None of the 1984 or 1985 offerings were designed for Transformers, the entire line was literally cobbled together of every transforming figure Hasbro/Takara could find.

I'm not surprised we've not had any big reveals for the movie today, it's way too early when you look at how it's previously been done with the TF movies, with TLK being very unusual for the amount of marketing that happened during production. Though some official hi-res photos of the eight vehicles would be cool.

That's true, I doubt the VW bus had much popularity (was it even imported at all?) in Japan back then. That said, this may sound odd, but to me, at least in retrospect, this dimension of it actually makes it more surprising to me. When you consider that they were gobbling up and repurposing everything they could to sell a new brand of transforming robots, it's surprising to me that no company available to them had molds of a VW bus at any point during the 70s. Surely not as iconic domestically there as elsewhere, but still. No transforming toys of it? Another reason I'm really hyped for this honestly lol.

Wasn’t expecting much. A bit of concept art or one or two robot designs wouldn’t of been unreasonable to hope for just to get the ball rolling.

Probably because technology at the time meant a van was hard to do. Remember that the one actually in the line, the Ratchet/Ironhide mold, was from the line where the transforming mecha were piloted by tiny men and not actually sentient robots themselves, so there the majority of the van actually becomes the 'battle sled' thing while the robot itself, with its captain's chair of a head, is really just like the front module that slots into the front of the alt. mode. Energon Tow-Line was meant to be an homage to this.

I want to live in the alternate timeline where a Diaclone VW bus existed and was piloted by a scrappy human pilot and just opened up into a battle sled like that honestly. :lol
