Finished prepping my Sunstreaker for decals. Cleaned up the masking lines around the windshield a little bit, needs one more pass with alcohol wipe. Three coats Tamiya yellow, one coat yellow clear and one coat gloss clear.
This looks amazing! And that spoiler looks like the one that comes in that new upgrade kit for SS. So Cool DIY is what it’s listed as in eBay.
are you going to leave it in alt mode? I've painted a couple Siege Thundercrackers, and the paint would rub off at the moving joints when transformed.
Y’all guessed correctly in the “So Cool” Spoiler. I only painted the alt mode on this figure due to my displaying being all alt mode. Having less painted plastic in robot mode is nice for actually playing with the toy (I do). If you must do a full repaint, mask off all the joints prior or disassemble the entire figure and sand them slightly. Forgoing paint on a few surfaces which see friction only preserves the hard work you already put in.
Yup, I noticed the labels went up on the website just as my fingers were itching my air brush. Should be here next week, but I’ll be out of town.
I am relatively new to using Tamiya, as in a few months, but have never used their clear paints. If this is the result, I am going to have to try it with my Sunstreaker. Fantastically done and I am in awe and a bit jealous of the talent, tbh
Thanks I started again last year after burying the hatchet for ten+ years. The colored clears give your paint job much needed depth. This was my first attempt at a masked off vehicle mode repaint. The clears can be finicky, go with a light coat let it dry for a minute and add a saturated coat, the trick is making sure your surface is dust free between coats and you've saturated the surface with the appropriate amount of paint. I'm using a UV light booth to dry my coats which allows me to complete a candy apple job without waiting 24 hours between coats (more like 8 minutes). Your skill will improve, it's kind of like baking or cooking a meal, over time you end up changing very small details in your procedure which improve the result. Wish you could taste the fish I cook.
That is so gorgeous. I'm so tempted to try painting mine too, I can't have Sunstreaker getting outshined by his brother so badly like he is right now. I'm just nervous about it because I'd want to paint pretty much every bit of yellow plastic, not just the parts visible in vehicle mode. I'm also worried about panel lining the painted parts, I've done lining over small painted areas before but never an entire painted figure.
It's definitely possible if your not afraid of depinning a few parts and sanding some surfaces that will come in contact. The parts that may eventually rub wont be too noticeable either. I'd go for it if it's important to you.
