Hello there! So this is sort of a question/speculation thread on any upcoming Legends Dinobots, regarding their size.

I haven’t heard any rumblings - but I imagine there will be a new set forthcoming from NA and MS at some point.

What I’m wondering about is scale. Both NA and MS lean closer to Legends+ these days… and are inching closer and closer to almost Hasbro deluxe size. Does this mean that their Dinobots will scale accordingly - and wind up almost Hasbro Voyager or even Leader sized?

Or would they be only a just a little taller than a Legends/Legends+ Optimus? Bringing them basically to a standard Hasbro Deluxe height?

Apologies for the specific line of questioning - but I love Legends for being smaller than official releases - and hope these guys aren’t too huge when/if they eventually get released.

Anyone with a finger on the scale-chart got some solid(ish) ideas? Thanks :)

I have to disagree about NA leaning toward Legends+. There's a fairly distinct size difference between NA's legend scaled bots and something like MFT (which are most certainly "Legends+"). MST are a little larger than NA, but I think most collectors still consider them pretty "standard" legends.

There's a very strong chance that both NA and MST will release a team of dinobots, at some point in their lineup and I think you'd be safe with either of those companies, if the goal is to avoid straying too large.

I own the complete MFT dino team and while they are pretty large, they scale pretty well with my Hot Soldiers Optimus and MFT Ultra Magnus, which is really all I care about. That said, they are showing their age in their design and their poor articulation.

If I upgrade, my guess would be that an MST dino team would probably best suit my own taste and not make my PotP Slash look too much like a giant.

Just my two cents, of course. Not sure if any of that is helpful!

That is helpful! I guess I started with Iron Factory - which for me are sort of the perfect size - but they do seem to be the smallest of the “Legends” class at the moment.

So for the new Dinobots, we’re maybe talking five inch figures?

I’ve thought several times about getting the DX9 Dinos - but at this point new figures must be being worked on by both NA and MS…

I would love for them to revisit the Grimlock kit they did a few years back - and do the whole team in a similar fashion (maybe with a little more articulation, and slightly less super-deformed proportions). And maybe not as kits.

Yeah, I have a few IF bots that I really like (I just picked up their Mirage), but most of the time their versions are just a little too stylized for me. That was the case with the Ashura Knights, or whatever they were called.

I don't think IF is incapable of making a nice set of dinobots, but it would surprise me if they take another stab at it before NA or MST gets theirs going. And of the three companies, NA and MST are way more likely to go the more traditional design route.

Agreed. I collect mainly for things that look good next to the Titans. Wouldn’t mind a Dinobot set from any of the main lines.

To bring it back to the scale subject. Is it true the Dinobots would stand maybe just a little taller than Optimus in the lines sticking closer to G1/Cartoon scales?

My personal preference is to have the dinobots be huge, which I know not everyone is in to. I think the G1 scale usually put Grimlock maybe a head/head and a half taller than Optimus.

I'll post a picture of my Grimlock and Optimus here in a bit and it will give you an idea.

    Edit:
    20211012_191653.jpg

That's MFT Grimlock with HS Optimus, PotP Slash and NA Jazz (who I am selling, since I pre-ordered MS Jazz to take his place).

I hope I'm wrong but personally don't think NA or MS will be tackling the dinobots anytime before 2023. It's that ol curse and blessing of competition in the legends game. Sometimes a release spurs another company to release, but other times NA & MS are like, nah... it's been done good enough by someone else, let's do this instead.

Quick crammed in group shot of a couple MFT Dino's which for me, fit the perfect size.

I do like those MFT Dinos (even if I prefer the size of the original DX9).

The MFT seem like where we’ll land for any new versions. And they’re about deluxe size, right?

At least the size of Ultra Magnus or larger

Between Newage or Magic Square you'd basically get a mini Grinder or Mp Grimlock. They could blow the DX9 ones away, you'd definitely get more articulation.

Yeah, I love my MFT Dino's, for sure, but I do wish they had more articulation.

    Good looking squad.
But why do you feel they won’t come before 2023? Both companies seem pretty heavy on Seasons 1/2/3, I would more lean to them announcing them on the same day in 2021 :D …
    I’m expecting dinobots, aerialbots, maybe
    more insecticons, jetfire, wheeljack, …

I wouldn't mind seeing Magic Square tackle the Dinobots. I'm not too familiar with New Age's work.

I want them soon just as bad, but like I said, if there's a suitable figure that a bunch of people already have, they tend to not get to them right away. They all will come out eventually but not before a bunch of others imo. I'm guessing you're only going to get 1 off your "expecting" list before 2023.

Dinobots - Room for improvement, but MFT still looks good for 2018. Ppl got the whole team for $125 at release compared to likely MS/NA $250+ & they just released a box set which landed more of them in collectors hands. Plus they're more expensive to manufacture (bigger) and the company that puts them out next is locked into 5 releases in their yearly lineup. so one day....

Insecticons - Newage crushed it with their version, they're pretty much near perfect, don't see MS getting to these right away.

Jetfire - My new #1 proper cartoon release wishlist bot now that MS jazz is coming. Probably run motormaster prices. At a higher cost to manufacture a B character is risky so don't see NA/MS jumping to get this done before say hound, mirage, sunstreaker, etc with Cygnus on peoples shelves..

Aerialbots - These guys you might get a shot at a sooner release with the combiner wars starting to heat up. But with Zeta releasing their version and BW announcing a KO of that, again my guess is not before 2023.

Wheeljack - This the 1 you'll probably get sooner than later. Fills a season 1 gap, the stylized iron factory and small head whiskey jack are just placeholders. Hopefully getting a new WJ in hand next year.

My preference is for the Dinobots to be significantly taller than Optimus. Kind of like the scaling between Kingdom UM with DNA kit + SS86 Grimlock + Earthrise Optimus, with Grimlock edging talltra Magnus by just fractions of an inch. The MFT Dinobots vs the MS OP and UM 2.0 sort of approximates that and for me that is perfect.

One of the reasons I didn't really like the idea of Dinobots being able to combine is because - at least to me - individually they are very large compared to most characters, and being able to combine means the combiner would be very, very big. But this is a topic for another time.

I use the MFT Dinos in my collection. The collection is NewAge scale (though I happily sub in Magic Square figures if they fit the scale).
MFT works pretty well for that.

MS has been increasing size, but NA's been consistent

MFT Dinos scale rather nicely with the other legends brands (MS and NA). There have been a couple of moments I almost pulled the trigger on the MFT Dinos, but something just kept me from doing so. They are nice, but could be improved upon. That's why I'm waiting on MS to reveal their Dinos, even if it's going to take another year.
When they do announce their Dinobots, I think they will be about the same size as the MFT Dinos, which to me is perfect. I'm expecting them to be more detailed and have better articulation.

    My MS wish list:
    - season 1 carbots finished
    - Dinobots
    - Jetfire
    - Sideswipe/Red Alert v2

I'm pretty happy with DX9's Dinobots. Great toys. Although I'm a big fan of both MST and NA, I don't think I would buy their versions. There's only so much you can do about a character, and DX9 nailed it.

Well, maybe Sludge? I'm not exactly convinced about how the whole dino neck is stuck inside the robot leg.
