At the end of day you gotta realize its just a video game....fuck man, this is the 11TH fighter Sakurai has given us, he didn't need to do any of this.

The man has been working with an iv drip in him and countless hours of overtime and working with a smaller and smaller budget to give us these characters for his magnum opus.

But reading everything I just posted, can you give me an objective reason other than personal preference why he should have gotten the nod rather than Sora or the other (many) options ahead of Doom in player polling, and on par with Doom in terms of industry history and influence?

Some more nuanced argument than "it should have happened because I say so?" (And do keep in mind when formulating your response, that I'm a Doom fan, and share your preference for him over Sora.)

 

sora was like, number 4 on my list of wants, and the rest were just more rogues for heroes (sonic and megaman need their respective villains), so i'm happy. isn't he just the last of the fighter pass DLC and there were rumblings that singular dlc characters are planned?

 

I think those are just hopeful rumors for more, Sakurai has made this pretty clear leading up to this point that this would be the last fighter for the roster.

Even the summary afterwards and the reveal mimicking the original game reveal trailer makes this feel like the finale.

 

I've been in this fandom ever since the original. Been online and reading speculation ever since the days of Melee, when we realised new characters could be a thing and they could be anything from the known and expected with Zelda and Peach, or the obscure with Ice Climbers and whatever this strange never released in English 'Fire Emblem' game was.

Through this time, through these long, many years, Sora has been a constant request, ever since Melee. I've seen decades of posts wanting him in, thinking on what his moveset could be. Thousands and thousands of speculations across hundreds of forums, nothing more than warm thoughts. While he's not my character (I thought the Disney barrier was one impassible), the fans for him in the game have suffered alongside my desire for Banjo to be in the game until now. Exactly as long. Exactly as much fanbase

Doom Slayer, as important as Doom is as a game, has been a complete non-entity in these arguments until now. Irrelevant. I've seen more requests for Master Chief, and even those were of a half jokey nature until Banjo happened.

Sora is an absolutely perfect capstone on this because, trust me, out in the wider internet? There's very few characters outside of Sora who've been as requested as he is. Like, Geno and Isaac are the next most likely. He's not a fad, its been a lasting request for the past decade. The most voted one. Doomslayer just does not have that kind of push behind him

 

so wtf are eggman and wiley getting into while their heroes are fighting the gods of nintendo world? eggman has to miss sonic a LITTLE, right?

 

Starting out with age, DOOM is almost 30 years old and has almost a decade up over Kingdom Hearts (DOOM 1 came out in 1993, KH1 in 2002)

Secondly, DOOM pretty much revolutionized and is considered the father of an entire video game genre by itself (First-Person Shooters) while by KH1’s release RPGs were nothing new.

 

Well...in some lore meta way, these fighters are just trophies created by Master Hand to use for his enjoyment within another universe. So in a way, he just didn't want to make models for fighting for Eggman and Wiley...

I admit though, both would have been fun to move around the stage with.

Because if it wasn't Sora, then realistically, it would have been one of them, if your criteria are influence, popularity, and/or impact.

 

wow. you missed the satire entirely.

also, you can't get the twitch-shooter nature of Doomslayer on a platfighter like Smash. i tried Doom VR where they traded out the hyper-kinetic movement with teleporting (because you'd vomit), did not feel like Doom at all.

again, Lists of most requested Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC characters by region based on twitter replies in 2019.

Doom Slayer didn't even break top three, at best he got top 5 in one region and polled nowhere close to top ten in Japan. Sora was top two in all three regions, and the Sm4sh poll that got us Bayonetta never released its results because of the characters that they could easily legally bring in was her, and Sora was the top voted even before that 2019 poll above. Sakurai has been working for years to figure out how to get Iwata's greenlight to work, and Sora's finally here. Just take the L and live with your Mii Costume already, prfctcellrulz

 

What I’m saying is your move set description has very little gun use. Lacking the heart of Doom guy.

SORA IN SUPER SMASH BROS ULTIMATE

 

Exactly this. If we're going by Smash community popularity, Sora won by a mile, in all but one region, where he was still #2. Making him the clear favorite. He also just fits (IMO) for a variety of reasons.

And even if they weren't adhering to that criterion (e.g., for the sake of argument, if Sakurai chose to totally ignore player polling and requests, which he didn't of course,) I laid our several other possible criteria as options (sales, influence, importance in video game history, arguable appropriateness for inclusion in a fighting game - though that one is dubious since we have things like Piranha Plant   - etc.) and asked them why Doomguy would be ahead of other examples offered when at least a few of them are every bit as influential, and even more popular if we go by sales.

GTA being the biggest one probably. As crazy as GTA being in Smash might sound, any argument in favor of Doomguy applies to it too, it has more sales by far, and it has been definitely at least as influential as Doom was on entire genres. (Whether people like it or not.) Though the adult nature of those games might preclude them of course. (But if that were the case, then Doom's rating should preclude it too. It's rated M.)

So yeah. My point was just that as much as I love Doom, even if Sora hadn't won, there were a lot of other characters and IPs that likely had to be considered before Doom. If we're going by any of those criteria, at least.

Doomguy Mii Fighter is cute, even if he was my #2 want (#1 was Eggman). That said, as someone who hasn't bothered with KH since the original release of 2 the announcement really got to me emotionally. Definitely happy he's in and looking forward to maybe giving the whole series a shot once it hits Switch.

 

If we're talking importance to video game history, then the first guest fighter for the next game is a clear choice.
