Vallejo blue should work (i use the mecha one)

Also...i caved and ordered that starscream only because i had store credit from my LS03 getting lost. There is actually so much good stuff right now like OS KO UT prime BA prime and Sentinel that i fear i might regret this purchase lol.

I went with the standard blue Gundam marker. It's just very slightly lighter but very hard to notice unless you're taking flash photography.

    This set!!

GSI Creos Gundam Marker Basic Set (6 Markers) https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0009AFN0S/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_QSZX9JX4KPXSHHVJFGZ4

This is super useful for a Studio Series collector / painter. The red blue and yellow here are just right for a host of movie figures.

The red and blue match Prime very well and the yellow is a rich yellow that matches Bee.

You also get a chrome marker and a panel liner.

You posted this at the right time. Tomorrow I'll be getting contact lenses and I'll finally be able to do a multitude of things including painting. I've always wanted to paint my figures but have been limited by my glasses. Either way I look forward to getting this set. Are there any other colors you'd recommend?

I gotta be honest, this is the only set of Gundam markers I own. I usually use Craftsmart paint pens you can get at Michael's, but I've always found that the red, blue, yellow and green available aren't quite right. The red is way too bright / pinkish and the "regular" blue is too dark. What I would recommend from Craftsmart are their black, gold, silver, and metallic black (which is really gunmetal gray), you can get them in regular or fine tips. You can also get a pack of Craftsmart colors for cheap.

Gundam markers have tips which let you easily do fine detail or broad strokes depending on the side you use. They're also easier to remove if you screw up.

Also, Craftsmart pens tend to have a bit more of a glossy finish while Gundam markers (if not specifically metallic) have a more matte finish.

Just finished the photo shoot earlier this evening. Still a lot of pics to edit, but here’s a couple preview shots of hardtop Sideswipe.

No problem! I'm really just an amateur and only add "paint apps" to complete what is missing on the base figure, I don't really do weathering or super fine detailing or anything like some of the very talented folks around here, so the paint pens and gundam markers are really helpful for that. Let me know if there's anything else I can answer!

A neat thing about paint pens is that you can in fact mix colors. The way the pens work is you press down to release paint and then the pen tip lets you apply, so if you let paint flow out by pressing down on a dish, you can mix things together. This was how I did yellow on Bee or blue on Optimus before getting the Gundam Markers - I'd mix yellow with a bit of orange to get it to the right color. But the gundam markers alone for those colors are better matches.

Good luck with getting into painting! It may seem like a lot at first since there's so many paint options, but once you get started you'll find what you like to work with and what your style is! If you ever get into brush painting, I'd advise going for the smallest brush you can find - it makes detail work so much easier!

Tamiya masking tape is also awesome for making sure you don't paint where you don't want to!
I haven't delved too much into the paint pen territory, but the couple Craftsmart ones I've had are nice. The ones I got forever ago are still working, I've used the same light blue paint pen on Beast Hunters Bumblebee (back in 2013 I think) and SS Jolt!

Speaking of paint, I've finally got an upload of my own after about 2 months - here is my finished SS Thundercracker!
