It's fractionally mistransformed, it flips down apparently

I think Maketoys couldn’t decide on a lane and as a result, didn’t develop a loyal customer base strong enough to sustain.

Even though I enjoy their figures, I was always perplexed by their decisions and their constant change in direction.

Yep. What “killed” them was them having no clue what market to go for. Even WJ (when they were around) for as random as they were, still had a focus. Maketoys wanted to dip it’s toes in every market all at once.

Oof. Why does it feel like that the more of this thing gets shipped out, the QC is starting to get messed up as well?

Regarding the proportions, @Liampope showed that DS actually copied the proportions of the MP figure: >clicky<

I assume you both got your figures from the same store 1EC212C3-E8AD-4921-B31D-C3CEC28B47A6.gif

Meteor was fine for its time, particularly compared to MP-11 if you were wanting a more toon look. But it had flaws, particularly a tiny head (with a way too dark face on Starscream). It was noticeable standing alone, but yeah, standing next to this or MP-52, really highlights the pinhead.

I mean, many folks just replaced his head with the one that came with MP-44, or 3-D printed equivalents, but that rendered him untransformable while the head was on. But I think some people were fine with that because they just wanted something on their shelf that looked more like the cartoon, even if they couldn't transform it. Heh, I do wonder if that put a false image in folks' minds, not realizing some of the pics of Meteor on this board had switched out the head, so they didn't actually know how tiny the stock head looks? I know most of the pics I've ever posted of G1 Meteor on this board has a replacement head.

Anyways, Meteor used to be the only game in town for a more toon look, but DS-001 basically does it better, so the only reason to get the Meteor mold is if you want to mix up the rest of the seekers (or DS doesn't end up making the rest of them)

I dunno. His post was well laid out but done way back in June. I'm NOT a designer or engineer but my eyes tell me the finished DS does not have the "exact" same proportions as MP52- It doesn't have the goofy looking short legs for example as the most obvious. DS is also substantially taller and if it had the exact same proportions it should look less than stellar, or at least more like just an oversize MP52, but it doesn't expand in every direction.

    But like, opinions, LOL. :p

Yeah I think it's pretty apparent that DS started with the MP-52 CAD design as the basis for robot mode, tweaked it to match their personal preference (I mean remember at the end of the day these are fans making their ideal MP Starscream) and then worked out an all new transformation to get it into jet mode.

Right. i mean transforming objects almost always have to compromise something. some will point to macross and say look how clean those jet modes are (and they are but they also don't have to look like a real world vehicle), and i'm a macross fan too (which shin knows) and you know what....it took 36 years for a Vf-1 to even get waist rotation and it was at the cost of stretching the idea of what "perfect transformation" is a tiny bit. I think the DS-001 makes the FOR ME right compromises for a cartoonish starscream (nevermind i'd greatly prefer a hybrid idealized version but here we are). Yes we'd all like an mp-6 skywarp or cleaner in alt mode but i've yet to see that done without it costing something else. igear got close with the hip kibble fix. mp-11 took it further, but they were both still lacking in the upper body due to the base mp-3 engineering decisions. these resulted in a center section of the torso (where the head is) that sits too high above the shoulders. meteor corrected those issues (thank goodness), but made some choices with the alt mode i wasn't a fan of. like its clean-ish but they didn't even try for a real F-15. and then there is the opaque cockpit - still it managed failry decent cartoon oriented proportions with a touch more kibble than the MP-52 or the DS-001 and great articulation. IF it didn't have the pinhead and the too dark face I feel like a lot of people would still be OK with it...and a lot are. Heck you can buy aftermarket heads for it (nusupply on etsy IIRC is one guy who does it) that solve that issue in bot mode. anyway, so here we are another BETTER (IMO) generation of starscreams, still imperfect but for a lot of people (toon centric especially) these two choices mp52/ds-001 will be the standard holders for years to come. I know i joined in on the nitpicking of mp-52 (mainly unhappy with the price i had to pay, the height of robot mode and the belly of jet mode, and well lots of people had QC issues too), but I think if we take a step back we should appreciate everything is a compromise. Which one will you make? :p  me? i'd love to have DS-001 robot proportions with mp-11 or greater level of extra detailing with a jet cleaner than mp-3/6/7. hasn't happened yet but that won't stop me from enjoying what is out there now.

Yeah - the CAD only matched 'perfectly' the frontal view. Knee height, thigh thickness and crotch slightly smaller being the obvious tweaks. Of course any other angle and the differences are much more apparent, like the much squarer flatter chest, thicker null rays, more stoic overall stance and of course much different backpack.

The different scale obviously couldn't be predicted at the time - that doesn't really affect proportions, but certainly perceived bulk, or 'presence', especially when the two figures are compared side by side!

I forgot how terrible MP-11 looked. Looking forward to getting this guy in 2/3 weeks.
