It's definitely aimed at getting a new audience as opposed to the older MOTU fandom - there's enough there for older fans but it's main goal is to get fresh eyes on the property. It remains to be seen how well it'll accomplish this, but I hope it works! There's a little something for everyone, I think.

I was very surprised by how much I liked this! Visual style admittedly took some getting used to, but it was fun, had a lot of heart and character, did a lot of interesting remixing and updating of old ideas (with some new ones), writing was sharp. Really hope this takes off and gets more than two seasons.

So, it's every underdog story that's ever been told and the magic of friendship?

Mmm, canned ham at its finest.

Not according to... episode five l, was it? Teela, "I can do this on my own skills."

"Nope, better get you some of this sweet Grayskull lightning blast."

Considering the whole point was that Teela was connected to the power of Grayskull just as much as Adam and was the new Sorceress, yes, you missed the point. Pretty sure it was explicitly said that the power was hers to wield if she chose to, not hers to borrow from Adam. You seem to see the show as overly shallow, but your observations of it are pretty shallow to begin with. You aren't seeing the nuance.

If I have to seek out nuance in a children's show then I am already wasting my time.

The idea of the "the power is in each of us... provided we tap into the mystic source of Grayskull" is too far off what made the original characters enjoyable.

Man-at-Arms shouldn't need to summon Grayskull nor should RamMan. And just immediately throwing Teela out there are the next Sorceress is a big leap. This show is trying way too hard to throw everything out there in the first season and, as a result, made nothing special about characters because everyone is essentially the same in a different color.

    Power Rangers.

Then it's not for you, but tonally and thematically it is very much in line with previous iterations of MOTU. Also, some of the best "children's shows" have a good deal of nuance and don't beat kids over the head by spoon feeding them the entire plot. You don't like it, and that's fine, but this is definitely in the same spirit as older MOTU series. Also, to claim each character is the same just because they all power up means that you ignored the fact that they are all different characters and have distinct personalities. Like I said, your perceptions of the show are incredibly shallow.

It's really not. This show has very little to do with the spirit of the original characters. Cringer, the wise old sage who is willing to put up a fight despite having no claws and his name being Cringer.

Adam, the lost orphan boy who found his new tribe and still wants to reconnect with his old family.

Teela, just thrown into the world of sorcery from the start and was also a lost little orphan taken in by the other side of the tracks, but gosh darn it, still has a heart of gold.

Duncan, a very confident engineer who can build claws on the fly and still laments not being able to fix the ship's engines when the plot needs him to back off a lot and feel useless.

Some sort of immediate contention between RamMan and Teela for the attention of Adam?

There is nothing about this show that reflects the original characters.

This series quickly devolved into young adult fan fiction.

It's a new version, it doesn't have to reflect the original perfectly. But the spirit of what makes MOTU MOTU is intact. This is like the Marvel Ultimate Universe where things might be similar or wildly different, but it's not the same despite feeling familiar. You don't like it, that's fine, but it's not power rangers, it's not fan fiction and no matter how much you claim otherwise you have a very shallow perception of the series. There's nothing wrong with that, but considering that you don't like the series, is it really worth it to you to continue this discussion considering you seem to be in the minority in this thread?

I have no shame and little else to do right now.

You want to defend this sorry show, be my guest. Let's hear more about the nuances.

    Exactly.

The archetypes used in most previous incarnations of MotU are present, albeit shuffled to different characters. I personally really like Cringer in this story as Adam's friend and mentor. It certainly helps to have the excellent David Kaye's performance.

I don't know if it's intentional, I have a feeling that it is considering how the writers are tuned into MotU lore, but the concept of the Tiger Tribe seems like a nod to the original He-Man of the vintage mini comics being from a tribe of savages/barbarians.

I like how many of the conceits of MotU that are normally tolerated without being acknowledged in previous stories purely because they are required by necessity, such as the naming of certain characters, are given consideration in this show.

One thing that has caught my attention is the end card for each episode. I love the monochromatic look and I wonder what the significance, if any, there is to the little symbols in each one.

One attention to detail I appreciated are the references to the Snake men and the Horde, though the Horde references are much more subtle. Also the slight implication of a missing family member (Adora) in the family portrait.

    Agreed.

I think season 1's various Easter eggs are great because they're not necessary to follow up on but they create potential in future seasons for expansion if the opportunity arises. One problem with ongoing shows is that the plot threads set up in earlier seasons don't come to fruition sometimes.

As great as it would be to see later, we don't need the Snake Men or the Horde or Adora to show up because the show has established its own direction at this point. But if those story elements do come in later, it's a nice bonus for fans in the know.

Something else that I appreciate is the judicious application of drawing out character arcs. Teela, Duncan, and Cringer were given an episode to work out a personal dilemma. Adam, as the lead, was given more time understandably, but it doesn’t come off as feeling dragged on. Krass is similarly given more than one episode but again it doesn't feel inappropriate.

Characters are given just enough script time to do their thing, which most shows, cartoons for kids or otherwise, often fail at.

4 episodes in...a little disappointed that Keldor won’t stay Keldor and transform into Skeletor, like Adam changes into He-Man, but I can’t have everything I want.
